In taking a close look this is actually a winding drum machine not a traction elevator. It is an earlier type of traction elevator with a counterweight, but differs with the hoist ropes wrapped around the drum front and back, one end is anchored to the top of the cab. Other to the counterweight. Traction elevator, the hoist ropes pass over the driven sheave into groves which grip the cables by friction. The hoist motor appears to have two separate field windings (stators) an likely an extended length armature (rotor) for the speed control. The machine room is very well laid out with the conduit and wiring channels. One safety concern the lift should not move when the landing door is open.

The up and down buttons in the elevator cab are for a function called inching. (found on some freight elevators)

Is it just me or does it sound like it reverses the speed steps when the cabin starts moving up the trough the shaft ? Like starting in high and then steps down ?
