Repairing a lawn mower that I bought new in 2016 but I made the big mistake of leaving it outside. Let's fix it!

The problem with the 450E carb is that the jet has been made VERY small to meet emission requirements. drilling the jet to the next possible size up is often the solution (next size up from the jets original size.

I’ve never seen a plastic carb. Interesting to explore it with you. Thanks for another satisfying episode in your mower saga. Would love to see a sickle bar mower or tiller some time ❤

I pilled one of those apart recently. I was surprised and impressed at how easy they pull apart and reassemble. Made me wonder why repair shops charge so much to work on them.

See the difference is, when others leave their mower outside, it's just neglect. For you, it's future content! All joking aside, even such a small machine is still a machine that got retored, as it should. That's the part most people don't do and just throw them away, so well done!

Excellent job bringing that mower back to a useful life. It may be only a humble push mower, but it is perfect for someone's smaller yard. The video shows it cuts very well. Also, for those who dislike and deplore plastic carburetors, you have demonstrated how eminently rebuildable they are. This is an education for me. Thumbs up from USA.

Hello you should clean the bottom of the mower and spray some wd-40 on the bottom it keeps the grass from sticking and I hope you get the mower running. 😊

I'm pretty sure all those types of engines with that carb set ups surge. I'm absolutely positive you know you have to in large the jet slightly. I had to do that to several mower that I've fixed for people. It blows my mind that this problem exists on these engines
@jameslane792210 ай бұрын
My understanding is that (at least in the US) the carb jets are manufactured narrower to help meet fuel emission and consumption standards. The narrower jets are more easily blocked, particularly with ethanol added gas, causing fuel starvation and thus surging. I've also found that these plastic carbs start to deform in high temperatures (such as those found in the southern US) causing the same kind of issues.
@Herbybandit10 ай бұрын
Yeah your right, the 450 series with that style carb needs the main jet opening up just a hair, apparently the new replacement jet cartridges are slightly better.
@mjg26310 ай бұрын
Nicely done! Usually when I take one of these apart for service I remove the starter housing first, then the tank and carb can be removed as a unit and separated on the bench for cleaning / flushing. I like these newer Briggs engines, very service friendly and no corrosion from bad fuel.

Thank You! I have a slightly newer model (DOM 4/2017) of that B&S engine. Mine is a new old stock - bought it on eBay for $100 and have it mounted to an older MTD mulching push mower deck. So far it has 29.5 hours on it. All of my equipment has a self-powered hour meter (if it doesn't already have one). I have my parent's Murray 22-inch side discharge mower they bought brand new in 1986 powered by a B&S 3.5 HP quantum flat head engine. Still running strong and that engine has over 500 hours on it. They always had it stored indoors. As of 8/2006 I bought a Yardman 21iinch self-propelled mulching mower powered by a 6.5 HP B&S Intek overhead valve engine and that as of this last Saturday is up to 302.47 hours of runtime. The gas tank spung a leak at 165 hours, so I replaced that for one with a larger capacity. I had to replace the catalytic muffler at 243 hours to a standard muffler, then the electronic ignition coil gave out at 287 hours. So... around the 200-hour period I had to replace some things. It runs better than new! No, you cannot have too many machines to "Play" around with.

Great video. love watching your videos. i do not have a building/shed to put my push and ride on mower in. so i put a heavy duty trash bag over the motors After the engine is cold after i use them. i do drain the gas out of them in late fall, including draining the gas out of the carbs. this seems to work for me.

We have these in Australia badged by Victa (blue deck, grey handle). Those little 16 inchers are a good second mower option for really awkward terrain. A steep grass hill that slopes to a concrete gutter is very sketchy unless the mower is light and nimble like these ones.

So true. I actually have a 13 incher that I use basically as a bagging weed wacker. Not just steep banks (have a few of those), but tight spots where the bigger mower won't fit. Bought it on a whim and can't believe how I lived without it, lol

nice little mower, we have one thats smaller (which yes, is possible...) which i may have accidentally left outside all winter, we live in quite a snowy bit of america, so it was under about a 6 and a half foot (2 meters or smth like that) snow drift... though we dug it out in early spring, replaced the oil, replaced the fuel, and vroom, runs fine now, was a bit smokey at first and a bit down on power for the first mow, but after that, it was fine

we have one of those, but i don't think it has the briggs engine. Absolute pain to get started cold without easy start. the carbs don't like having fuel sat in them over winter either. they're not bad for the price though.

These are the late engines that ruined B&S reputation. Anything post 2005 stratton is not known to be reliable. You need to get a Honda HRU194 and restore it; best quality mowers ever made and 40 years old! I very recently had a walk behind Honda HRU195 with over 10,000 hours on it, worked perfectly except for the rubber valve stem seals that needed replacing
