Nice video! About 10 years ago my father brought me a Tecumseh LAV35 from our neighbor. I spent a lot of afternoons to restore it after school. I did almost everything you do in the video. Unfortunately the piston-ring replacement was not enought to avoid oil consume of the engine. After 4 years of using it the 45 years old lawn mower has been retired. Now it is a "statue" in my workshop. A lot of memories.

I never thought I'd be so happy watching a video of someone mowing the lawn. I want that lawnmower (or that type). No bog down cutting thick grass. I lost my favorite mower as a kid (one of those scary reel-to-reel 5hp craftsman) when the fuel hose got ripped of at the same time as the spark plug. Wish I could find another... burnt it all up
@mjg2634 жыл бұрын
Fantastic rebuild, and what a piece of machinery! The engine reminds me of the 5 hp Briggs we had on the back of our AMF riding mower in the late 60’s early 70’s. It ran for years until one day Dad forgot to check the oil, ran it dry and it seized up. I took the engine off and rebuilt it for him, it ran for another dozen or so years before we gave the mower away. You could buy all of those parts at the local mower shop back then!

Growing up around old school hot rod guys, I learned a bunch if stuff so I figured I could pass it along to anyone who wants it. At about 18 minutes in he used that permatex assembly lube, which is good for bearing and seal surfaces, but at 19:30 he coated the cylinder wall with it which is wrong. Engine oil or assembly lube will make it harder for the rings to seat, I was told to use wd-40 or something equivalent. Also always coat both surfaces when putting bearing surfaces together (ex. Coat the pin bore in the piston and wrist pin its self not just one or the other) or it will leave some dry spots on the surface. Greatly enjoy the videos man and I also understand that engine building is a talent and most of us have different talents.

@Hoggdoc19464 жыл бұрын
I wonder why he didn't hone the cylinder. I believe that is always recommended when installing new rings as it allows them to seat in well.
@erikj.20664 жыл бұрын
It's an aluminum bore engine. Depending on the type of rings he used, it's usually wasn't advisable to hone an aluminum bore as the hone will leave grit behind imbedded in the cylinder walls, which is difficult to remove. EDIT: Watched further into the video, and appears the NOS rings he used were plated, just like the piston should be. You don't hone for those.
@jamesg93854 жыл бұрын
A very light cross hatch with a fine stone should have been used to help remove an scores down the length of the bore. a second clean would have had to be done, but the rings stiil need a surface to mate to. it's the only part of the video that I questioned. Extra care would have had to be taken due to the aluminium block, but done nonetheless.
@scdevon4 жыл бұрын

Nice rebuild, there are a couple of things I did differently when rebuilding my 3.5 horsepower Briggs and Stratton lawnmower engine :- - I gave the Kool Bore cylinder a light hone & fitted aftermarket Stens steel piston rings - I checked the valve lash after lapping the valves in,the valve stems needed grinding down - I reoil the air filter as it says on your filter housing,I wash it out with soapy water,let it dry out then saturate it with engine oil then I totally wring it out then refit it into the air filter housing !

Agree on all points, I was thinking the chuffing was likely due to the valves riding the cam (no clearance)
@jackthackray77574 жыл бұрын
@@alasdair4161 could you elaborate on what you mean by chuffing ? I have a Briggs engine which occasionally "pops" (not a backfire) and was wondering if it was valve lash as you said
@alasdair41614 жыл бұрын
@@jackthackray7757 Yes, it's not really a backfire, with small engines it sounds more like a random miss, but with car engines, listening at the exhaust it sounds more like an irregular chuffing sound, indicating either burnt valves or insufficient valve clearance causing poor sealing, most often around the exhaust valve/s. It's also worth keeping in mind, these old engines were designed for leaded fuel, so many end up with valve seat recession and poor sealing from being run with unleaded fuel. You can get lead substitute to prevent it, or go the full hog and have hard seats fitted... but that would be expensive. Cheers.

I don't see how this motor could be any MORE sophisticated in terms of simplicity and reliability. A wonderful rebuild as well. Remember my dad buying one of these mowers second hand. A thirsty brute. But couldn't afford a new Honda at the time. I'm nearly sure the Honda, when we got one would cut the grass 4 x times on the same fuel as well as putting the clippings into a grass bag. Best wishes from Northern Ireland.

it is not a good idea to "HONE" an aluminum cylinder( too much metal dust is created, and it is hard to get out) unless your going to bore to the next over size piston. there "WUZ" 3 oversize pistons available for that engine. getting internal parts for an engine that went out of production in 1970 can be a real trick!!!!. actually this engine needed to go .010 oversize piston, I saw the "TAPER CUT" at the top of the cylinder, and I could "HEAR" the "PISTON SLAP" in his rebuilt engine!!!!

Heres the rundown for everyone ok. I see a 3rd world war brewing. So basically this old machine most likely is 2nd 3rd 4th or even 5th hand and at some point it more than likely saw a rebuild before. What does that mean? Well you see through normal engine wear the cylinder will bore itself larger. Ok now thats not too much of a worry on an engine with a cast iron or steel liner because theyre thick material. This is a kool bore engine meaning there is a coating inside the cylinder much thinner than any liner. Honing that coating especially if its the 2nd time round (and with engine wear taken into account too) could very well destroy it
@jws39254 жыл бұрын
@@alexhickey5633 Besides, Briggs and Stratton does NOT recommend honing this type of bore. I have been rebuilding these since the early 70's and the ONLY time I will lightly hone one is if I am using Chrome rings. This is right out of the B & S service manual of the 1960's and 70's
