You just gave me a flashback from my working days. I retired from working at a power plant and every job I went on with a certain guy he would spray everything down with penetrating oil. Then he would say, penetrating oil is your friend. Use to drive me crazy.

Not too sure if you are reading these comments but I posted a message to you regarding making the wipers out of aluminum. Although they look great, they may give you problems when you start using the machine. The wipers are supposed to be soft and flexible. The reason for that is so that chips get brushed off of the ways. If chips get caught under the new aluminum wipers they will scratch the ways. The old plastic wipers were soft enough so that the chips would dig into the plastic wipers and NOT the ways. I wrote the name of the machine shop supply company in my last message to you. I’m only looking out for you so you don’t do a ton of damage to your machine. The company that furnished that info to me has been in business for over 60 years and I’m sure they know their shit.

@@chancellor170 the guy that I spoke to at the supply shop said that it had to be soft and flexible. Isn’t phenolic material on the hard side or can a phenolic material be made soft by changing the resin amounts?

@@Naplesfrank154 Phenolic is rigid enough to machine but it has a soft density. Although it might not hold up well when exposed to coolant. I would end up using a plastic like delrin for this application because it’s cheap.

Yes I did see your comment. The aluminum is not gonna be touching the ways. It's just to hold the rubber wipers in place. When pushing the chips the aluminum really won't be doing anything because the rubber is butted up against the hardened steel ways which are gonna do more of the pushing than the aluminum. Now when pulling back the aluminum will be doing more work holding the rubber in place but there should be no chips on the back side. I googled Way wipers and the first thing that popped up was made in the USA aluminum holders for over $300 so I don't think the aluminum is gonna be an issue. I do think I will buy the right rubber or felt because that's the real important part. here is the link if it will let me post it www.ebay.com/itm/276015218991?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-213727-13078-0&mkcid=2&itemid=276015218991&targetid=4581046493085020&device=c&mktype=&googleloc=&poi=&campaignid=603678871&mkgroupid=1239150626926797&rlsatarget=pla-4581046493085020&abcId=9375682&merchantid=51291&msclkid=1a123e82bd9b1167b0cf588f101aa5ff

Looks good man! Things are coming along. Chip management is def a thing. I think you're on the right track with using some kind of plexi-glass shield to contain the chips for easier cleanup. And also rigging up a vacuum system to send the chips straight into a large drum.

Fuel oil or kerosene works very well as a coolant/lubricant for machining aluminum, for the chips maybe a shop vac with a nozzle you can position near the mill would work. I use compressed air to clean down my small vice mill on a bench top drill setup, but you have many places that chips can lodge and foul the smooth running of the mill. g'day from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺

Ok so hear me out, that big Solar cabinet you build a cabinet for that mill like the real mills have, they contain all your chips and collect your coolant fluid with a pump in there returning to the machine. You need to get a machinist handbook,it will tell you speeds and feeds for different materials and tooling so you won’t have to guess, every process engineer uses one. Oh and rust never sleeps, maybe Steveo was running straight water and didn’t notice anything year or 2 down the road could be just ate up with rust deep down inside, water is very small molecule, adheres to everything gets in the air and creeps it’s way into every hidey hole I mean just with the high humidity there stuff will rust, coolant get some

Can you mount the mister on the other side of the lathe? The knobs would be towards you rather than away from you. The hose would then have to reach over to the other side! Maybe swap the light with the mist head. To put on the back wiper, you will probably need to pull the whole table off and fit the wiper before replacing the table.

No,buy some coolant,it comes concentrated and you mix with water you can probably get like a gallon or half gallon. I actually just last week got my big solar project producing power been working on it over a year I’m basically an expert ask me anything 😊 all my panels I bought used, there is a decent market for them but you better check the output on them before you commit to taking a bunch of them they don’t scrap out very well you could be stuck with a big pile of trash. I’m writing from my iPad plugged in to solar lovin it. If you think about having them guys pay you to haul their stuff off you better be thinking workman’s comp and osha and all the other words that come with gubment overreach. You can also buy coolant lines that snap together sort of like legos, the name escapes me rtm but they are solid and you bend them any way you want and they hold the shape I’ll try and look for them. Trying to scrap out some motors that go in o2 concentrators pitons offset on either end real pita wish you guys had one to figure it out

The machine is quite well built. You have to ask yourself a question. A why was a perfectly built metal machine have plastic and rubber wipers in in the first place. Maybe they need to be flexible because of the chips building up thus might create a force that needs a flexible part to overcome some issue that arrised when they first tested the machine in production. It looks like they swapped to plastic for a reason and would do a bit more investigating incase damage is caused to the ways. Just a thought brother.

If you intend to smelt the aluminum shavings then you are going to have to figure out how to remove dissolved hydrogen from the molten aluminum, otherwise you will end up with hydrogen bubbles all throughout your piece of aluminum. The molten aluminum will react with water from the air and the hydrogen will go into solution. As the aluminum cools hydrogen will come out of solution and produce bubbles in the metal.
