I enjoy watching just to see the progress being made and see the train come together in the abstract, but I love how I always pick up a few new simple machining techniques along the way.

Hi Crispin... I'm going watch this clip again just to get the maths sorted out in my mind! I sure it took some thinking about to work out the best solution for the steam porting. Great stuff - well done!

Hi Crispin, great to see you back in action again, love the new DRO. KZbin is playing silly buggers here in Australia, will not allow me to watch the whole video. I hope that you remembered to make the other cylinder covers 'Handed" when you drilled the other set ? So easy to get carried away and forget to do. Keep the excellent video's coming.

Extremely well explained and set up. And a good example of how versatile those adjustable parallels can be. I am curious why you didn't cut the end of the steam entry relief using either a ball end mill or just taper the end of the slot to help guide the steam down and into the cylinder? Steam is really no different than the air/fuel flow into an internal combustion engine, and everything you can do to make that flow more smoothly and efficiently helps. But I suspect you have a good reason for doing that cut in the shape you did.

Just wondering, since you have a DRO, why don't you just mount the part on the bed and use the XY to position over each hole? Could also clock that flat space to make it square to the machine and work out hole positions accordingly... I guess working out XY positions would be the difficult bit

Had you thought about putting in some dummy bolts to miss the steam port? It would look far more regular then and I'm sure with 11 studs left you have sufficient strength
@robw538 жыл бұрын
James Beynon it's to do with creating a seal against the cylinder rather than strength. By not having any bolts near the steam port it may have caused steam leaks around the area with the large amount of compression from the piston.
@bcbloc028 жыл бұрын
Is it just a metal to metal seal for the caps or do you use a gasket or some kind of sealer to ensure total containment?
@robw538 жыл бұрын
bcbloc02 I use special paper gasket material but you can use gasket sealants that are similar to silicon sealant. it just makes it messy and awkward if you wish to split the components for maintenance.
