Good video! 5cc is really small four stroke. I used an offset turning fixture in my 9" lathe to nibble cut 5 degrees at a time for my 10cc four stroke cams.

I have a Hobby Lathe which I adapt for milling . I make models of steam engines and recently IC engines When it came to making a model cam shaft I had to use my basic hobby lathe. I decided to use milling as the best option but did not have centres on my lathe for milling hence had to come up with an alternative. I decided to hold the camshaft blank in a vice on the milling slide. I used a parallel spacer between the bottom of the cam blank and base of the vice so I could hold the cam tight in the vice at a given distance to the fly cutter on the mill. I milled the dwell of the cam by taking a cut then opening the vice and rotating the cam by 5 degrees tightening the vice and taking another cut. My cam is designed with a lift of 0.080 inch plus 0.010 inch dwell Clearance means milling 0.100 inch for the dwell of 180 degrees. Once the dwell has been roughed out the rise and fall ramps can follow. The cam blank was rotated so the line of the rising ramp was parallel with the line the fly cutter Then it was milled down to this line. The same for the fall. I used a fine file to finish the surface of the cam. This is very rough and basic but the finished cam has worked ok.

We are new here, what a wonderful looking motor, we are here because we love machining makers making greatness one chip or swarf at a time. 4:56 in hello kitty we have one each cat here, happy we are to see this fine cat, thank you. We like it here, we will be back to follow your progress. Nice machined cam part in the end. Lance for Lance & Patrick.

Used to make plate cams in the Toolroom on a Parkson universal. Div head and cutter at 90deg horiz mounted in an angle attachment. Then from tooling part print using table we cut the pre prepared blank as reqd. Some cams had 72deg increments for cutting and a few used full 360deg. Circa 1976 before the days of easy NC Programming and machining. Happy days for us apprentice jig and tool fitters.

This is a very nice video, that share One way to make the cams on milling machine, You know i have a new milling machine SIEG SX3L very similar to your with all Dro, divider etc...i Will make the cams for My boxer ( flat engine) engine (4 cylinders and 120 cubic centimeters of volume) like you: thank you so much, Greetings from Italy, Alberto.🇮🇹🤗

This approach is good for model engine cams where dynamics safety margin is (hopefully) high and noise does not really matter. For other cams, God invented the Landis CNC cam grinder.

Hi, the method I used to design the cams was taken from the book ‘Miniature Internal Combustion Engines’ by Malcolm Stride. This defines the base circle radius, flank radius and nose radius and depends on the engine timing. I then drew this up on CAD. The CAM offsets/coordinates shown in the vid were measured by rotating the wooden cam in a rotary table and measuring with digital callipers. In this case, these measurements are the amount by which the milling machine head has to be lowered, which is different to the XY coordinates of the cam profile. I hope this makes sense! Cheers, MMS.

Hi, great video. How have you found the X3 mill?. Regards MachineNZ

Thanks! X3 is a good basic machine and a decent size for home use. Its rigidity and power are somewhat lacking for heavier cuts in steel though.

Great idea. I should be getting my hands on a Myford in the next couple of months, I'll have to watch more of your videos for ideas.
