Rottler Manufacturing’s Ed Kiebler went to Guilford, IN, home of BES Racing Engines to sit down with Tony Bischoff and Darren Morgan and answer questions from the EP Expo audience about seat and guide work.
The guys talk about everything from the radius of cutting bits to the amount of press needed to seat a ring in cast iron versus aluminum - even when it’s better to not do seat and use a lead fuel additive instead.
Along the way, they also answer questions about recommended guide clearances, materials, and finishes, and how they vary by application. They also talk laying out intake tracks based on desired power and why getting it right on the intake side is so much more important than the exhaust.
Finally, the pair talks about shop-level basics like how to choose a grinder (and how to hold it so you don’t get killed), why matching shape to contour is important in a lollipop cutter, and why 60 grit is easy choice when it’s time to sand roll.
A great segment worth watching a couple of times!

I been porting since 1977 I started out with a Dumore grinder it weighed about 5lbs. I'm still going at it age 65 with modern equipment now although I did get rid of the SF-600 flow bench.

Hi guys, what do you think about immersing the valve guides in oil and turning on the vacuum tester? I can attach a video if you are interested

Surprised I didn't hear of offset boring the counter bore. Simple process. Just takes a little bit more time.

Can I make a suggestion. On the ending of each episode. Can you post a video of how to' s on operating a machine, like a Rottler or CBW or anything, for us newbies? Thank you and more horsepower

Thank for the suggestion. KZbin's algorithms show you similar videos based on your viewing, so we don't have a bunch of control over it, but do make sure to check out our Machining How-to's playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PLs-RltfBJvTdvWkZ9KF3TI2SinVUQrLXx Also, if you're not subscribed, make sure to add @rottlerfg (www.youtube.com/@rottlermfg) to your list. That channel is packed with great demos and watching a couple will get KZbin to suggest similar ones you might not discover otherwise!

I think I want to re engineering stock material and parts to have a reliable motor with forced induction.

If you could change runner length through rpm band would you? Audi's a8l 2001 4.2l v8 40v does this with a dual air plenum, different lengths essentially. And would it benefit greatly with forced induction motors?

There is a video showing this testing on a dyno on youtube. The engine guys played with different length runners on a turbo engine. Nothing else changed except runner lengths. The engine responded much the same as you would expect in a non turbo application. The longer runners did produce more torque down low and less up top and short runners did the opposite. It was interesting to see the engine responded, even with a turbo to the manifold runner lengths. The longer runners would also help with turbo spool, making it come in a little earlier. So yes it is worth tuning your manifold for your target power band even if the engine is turbocharged.

Mazda did that on their 1991 LeMans winning 26B engine. Computer controlled stepper motor varied the trumpet lengths through the RPM band.
