I been porting since 1977 I started out with a Dumore grinder it weighed about 5lbs. I'm still going at it age 65 with modern equipment now although I did get rid of the SF-600 flow bench.

Question- The subject is the 408 W build. When the solid roller was installed did you guys check the valve clearance? It had .669" lift with a 1.72 rocker. The pistons have a valve relief.

This is a video that doesn't suck and all useful information, (even if your never going to build race engines). Some of the things I've done for 40~50 years as an 'engine' machinist but others were new to me. Piston holding fixtures, I always cringe when I see 'professionals' just clamping pistons or liners any old vice or whatever. Nickel bronze valve guides, (C63000) specific for Titanium valves? I know titanium has a lot of issues as it's difficult to machine and likes to 'combine' with just about anything it touches.

Don't lighten the crank? I think he should have said be careful how and where you lighten crank. The one they are playing with has been lightened significantly compared to a stock crank. There are area's on bob-weights that can be lightened without causing loss of strength in torsion or flex. It's been known since 1940's that cross drilling crank-pins actually males crank stronger and less likely to crack. Overall, pretty worthless video as it didn't really have very much information and could have been a 'short'

I appreciate the detailed information that Lake and Jimmy provided about the preparation and installation of the Total Seal gas ported, gapless piston ring sets. In the follow up segment after this engine was subjected to some serious dyno test flogging, Lakes Motor Oil Geek analysis revealed some very interesting results. The used oil chromium content from ring wear never exceeded 1 ppm in all of the NA and forced induction tests. The Total Seal rings were the only component listed that didn’t have excessive wear. Of course using a quality oil of the proper viscosity is important. But extreme boost will quickly reveal a poorly assembled engine or inferior components. Well done Lake, Jimmy and Total Seal 🏁

You may have "reduced" VE, but you increased trapping efficiency and reduced pumping loss (and less dilution). That smaller cam will be a much nicer driver too. Which rpm did you use to drive the new cam design? I don't recall who said it, but a hole in the torque curve isn't just a lack of power. It's a sign that the engine won't pull well. Water brakes don't show that at 300 rpm/s. Stock 2016 Stingrays accelerate at over 1000 rpm/s in first gear.

There's a typo in Darrin's CFM equation. It should read CID*RPM*0.0009875/CYL. An easier version is CID*RPM/(1013*CYL). It doesn't work with Gen V small block heads.

The old gm tuned port injection (TPI) efi manifold from the 80’s used resonant frequencies for force air in. Problems, too small runners limit top rpm’s potential, too big and you loose the resonance frequency to ram air in.

According to the N.H.R.A. rule book hollow stem valves are not legal, and the max overbore size is .080 not .060 minor mistake but non the less these are the current rules I would have to see 475 c.f.m. with my own eyes to believe this otherwise it is impressive if you're into flow bench numbers.

We won Indy in 2003 and 2004 qualified #1 in 2000 at the time we were still using a cross-ram and 8,900 R.P.M.'s...we had the national record at 8.53 at 153+..I was co-engine builder with my dad and did the Cylinder heads from scratch I also designed the intake manifolds that we had Hogan's build I was maintaining 4 hemi super stock cars full time as I was also the head mechanic it was hectic at times also, doing the cast iron heads sucked and I did a lot of them.

Q-16 was a big gain. Oxygenated fuel !!! I’ve run a Q-15 blend that was 1/2 Q-16 and half C-15 I think it was. Bumped my jets 3 numbers and picked up in a 175 mph dragster. The Q fuels are very popular and add considerable power

Good Morning from Australia. First I have a hyundai 2012 ix35 with petrol theta 2 direct injection motor. The car has only travelled 75000 km from new serviced 12 monthly at about every 8000km. In November 2021 the engine started knocking so I took it to Hyundai who investigated the knocking and informed me the engine had suffered a catastrophic engine failure and big end or bottom end bearing on no.3 cylinder had failed. Hyundai Australia refuses to accept liability for this failure and the matter is now before the civil administration tribunal. I have been asked by the convener of the tribunal to prove what caused the bearing failure and that the failure was caused during the manufacturing process. I still have access to the car and the engine, however the oil has been drained. I believe it maybe partly disassembled however not completely. I have spoken to a number of mechanical engineers in Australia who have told me that if the bearing has failed it is impossible to identify the cause of the failure and this leaves me unable to prove to the tribunal, a. what caused the failure and b. that the failure was a result of the manufacturing process. I do know that 1.4 million vehicles with the theta 2 direct injection motor produced by Kia and hyundai in USA have also suffered with this issue and there maybe documents that are avaliable stating the cause of these failures which caused the recall. However I have not been able to locate this information is there anything I can do to prove the points requested by the tribunal or is my case a lost cause. please Help. I do have access to a workshop and could continue to pull the engine down to reveal the other bearings, caps and con rods.

I don't mean this in a negative way, this information in these videos is Awesome. But at what point is this "Awesome" needed. Needed is not the right word. Is compared to this?My factory engine is junk, but it has 260,000 miles on it. It could easily be manipulated to make 6-800hp and live. When do you need to pay to have the best/ Perfect/right. ?

One reason why OEM is doing things more precise these days is for emissions, with today's fuel prices some things can pay for itself pretty quickly and the power is a bonus. 🙂
