I’m one of your biggest fan Howie, I’ve owned my own machine shop but was schooled in the Bay Area in the hay day , I’m 70 and retired , I miss it.I worked on ship processing 2 seasons, cold bay, false pass, and Dutch harbor, spending it quickly at the old pioneer square early 80’s , crazy days. Thanks so much for videos , keep um coming.

Late to comment...been in the trade for 35 years, always learn a few things watching your channel... I'll toss in 2 more ways to measure...1) using the Gage pin method , Baltec offers gage balls in almost every size available,as well as sets of balls under to oversize of nominal at reasonable prices.Another plus of a spherical ball is you could grind a flat on the ball, super glue it to a rod, and measure well into the bore by rotating the sphere.2) When you are measuring across the parallel, try a gage ball or gage pin on top of a gage block stack. It's a very repeatable method. I used to use it when milling d-shaped counterbores. Love your channel, keep uo the good work, stay safe.

One thing I learned as an employee working for successful small businesses is that the guys who did well either did the work themselves, or dedicated themselves to managing The cognitive load of difficult jobs is enough that you can't be managing people at the same time. If they were working on a weird project, they would have to block out time where they wouldn't be interrupted At one shop, I worked my way up to being the guy who took care of the shop problem cars (as an auto mechanic); they took a senior mechanic and made him the lead, who watched the other guys. He was really good at running a crew, and took a bunch of load off the owners Allowed them to focus on growing the business

As a machinist I understand trying to be precise but just envision how precise they measured when building that part. Im sure it wasnt made that precise

An optacoul conpaireator is a great machine for checking parts like that

Yes, and they are affordable now, too bad I don't have the room for one.

@@HOWEES same here, no room for it. But a man can dream... the one i had was about 5' by 12', a small lathe now sits there. They do make smallish bench top ones now, i may get one

You learn something every day with Howee. Its a bit of a shame that you guys are still on the imperial system. In the UK quite a few machines use imperial graduations on the lathe/mill etc, so i do use both systems, metric and US,its just so much easier in mm than thou. Once you can convert instantly in your head both mm-imp and imp-mm measuring using different tools with different graduations becomes second nature. Obviously Howee measures many many times. I just prefer mm. Sorry. Am i charlatan? Good work Howee.

I'm a bit confused-can't you drop that on a surface plate and measure the ledges and bottom of the U with a height gage?
