Welcome on board of the Intercity service from Amsterdam to Arnhem and from there all the way back to Den Helder. This video starts in the end of the afternoon and it will take us a while before we reach our final stop.
This also means this video contains daylight shots and night shots! Normally I don't show the night views on the tracks because the camera is not made to do that, but I thought you might like it for this time. if you don't like the night view then you can still see the greater picture until we reach Amsterdam on our way back to Den Helder. Make sure to let me know what you think of it.
We depart a little late from Amsterdam but are back on schedule in no-time! At Amsterdam Bijlmer Arena the Intercity service coming from Schiphol Airport departs late from Bijlmer. This causes the lower speed for our train at that location giving us a two minute delay. Luckily we can speed up quickly and arrive perfectly on time in Utrecht.
A little further on the route you will see the brand new situation in Driebergen-Zeist! The construction works at this station were finished just six days before the recording. Trains that need to make stops at this station change tracks with a maximum speed of 80km/h in the junctions.
After our arrival in Arnhem I had a 30 minute break. After this we continue on the next train (also a VIRM double decks train by the way, but this time with 6 carriages instead of 8). Right after departure in Arnhem the train dispatcher wants us to do some 'roestrijden' (driving over rusty junctions). To do so we must wait for the Sprinter coming from Ede-Wageningen first. This gives us a 3 minute delay at passing Oosterbeek. At our first stop this delay has almost vanished.
As said: in Utrecht the sun is going under and the light is getting less and less. Normally I would've quit recording over there but now I will take you with my until Den Helder. Me as a driver sees a little bit more than the camera, but still it paints a good picture of how it do drive at night!
At Uitgeest the Sprinter from Heemkerk needs to pass by. I had seen the delay on the tablet already and hoped we reached Uitgeest before the Sprinter. But two seconds before we were at the point where our signals would've been set the Sprinter already reached that point on his line. At first the Sprinter got a green path for departure as well, but the train dispatcher took back that path and gave us the green light first.
When in dark situations the driver is not allowed to increase speed before the next signal that gives a higher speed is reached. This is different by daylight. So here's the reason why we cannot increase speed even though there's a green light right in front of us after passing the yellow signal first. This situation gives a three minute delay.
By the way: at departure in Castricum, Heiloo, Schagen and Anna Paulowna I mistakenly chose for 'Vmax 40' instead of 'Limit Speed to 40' (until we reach a signal that allows a higher speed). I didn't have the time to correct that (rendering this video took 15 hours).
