This mod shows that the PSP was an incredible marvel of engineering. Not only the construction as you can see, but the power of the device. A goddang PS2 almost, in 2004, portable. Their choice to go with optical discs was something only Sony would have the balls to do as well, and really allowed it to shine with all the graphics it can pull off and the depth of games. PSP's marvel of engineering aside, this mod really follows. That level of proper engineering of boards is as incredible as it can get and as an engineer myself, I know, absolutely love and respect the effort and ability put into this. And it's upgradable to boot, considering it's modularity. The only thing I could point as a change would be using the Memory Stick slot for the Pi's SD slot on the carrier board, and that sure isn't much of a thing to complain even. One funny thing tho is running PS1 games on it or PSP emulated, that's the silliest most roundabout way of achieving the functionality it already had, but of course that isn't the point, I can imagine this being a beast running Wii games even when the software support is there and the Pi compute modules get powerful enough. Imagine a PSP running Switch games? That would be crazy!

This is a cool mod and I'd deffo do it in any faulty PSP1000 I come across. Can't help but feel this should have been listed in the cons section: No PSP game support yet, and the ps1 emulation could also be slightly lacking when compared to POPS loading also available in standard cfw PSP. Let me help with cons: 1. You can turn PSP into homebrew and emulation powerhouse without any hardware modifications. Yes, less powerful, so only few N64 games can run with decent FPS, but again - it's free and no assembly required. 2. This mod has PSP controls intact, so going into advanced 3D-emulation is more of a flex than the actual fun, since you could barely handle PS1 controls in a very simple games, and despite having an analog stick you're stuck to a digital control scheme just because you have to compensate for L2/R2 absence with d-pad (which also rendered some games that rely on six-finger layout painful to play). So any talk of a future potential is poitless - without modding the console to accomodate analogue L2/R2 triggers and L3/R3 sticks, any further hardware upgrades are pointless - even if one day there would be enough power to run Xenia there, it would be impossible to play most of the games due to a deficient controls. Don't get me wrong, this is an impressive technical feat and surely could make use of a dead PSP, but if you have one still operational - you have all you need already, just hack it, and if you want to go an extra step, you can put an IPS screen, new battery and micro-SD adapter there.

@daimer8660 Let's say that there are a hundred seventeen million console players out there. This was the number of units shipped for the PS4 during the eighth generation and the best-selling system. This makes it a good baseline if anything else. The playstation vita only sold sixteen million units. This means that there's only one playstation vita for every seven people to share. Do you see why low level Or even cycle accurate emulation of failed systems is important? And why destroying the only units that can play these games By making unnecessary modifications to them natively is a bad idea? Not to mention the vita has a built in camera, microphone, motion controls, and the rear touch panel. All those things are rather difficult to emulate unless the hardware It's being emulated on also has those things. This is why preservation of the system is extremely important for the sake of archival.
@Squared_Phoenix Жыл бұрын
@@thefool3424 as I explained, the analogue stick on the psp is terrible, not to mention there's only 1 of them. On the vita you're getting proper analogue sticks and two of them. In theory the Raspberry Pi CM4 can run PS2 emulators via AetherSX2 (don't know how great that is and only if ubuntu support is added) so a future mod could be to add a second joystick to enable this. Then it would pretty much run every retro console in existence (aside from gamecube maybe). Also I believe Pi CM4 has bluetooth built in don't know if the OS supports that. Another thing, to me not being Type-C is a deal breaker since I lost the original cable when my PS2 got bricked plus it would add versatility to the mod. Inall, GREAT mod and the fact it's open source is amazing and will probably allow for more mods such as the ones I mentioned. Edit: After some research, i found both a Type-C and a second analog stick mod so when the CM5 arrives I'll do this project. Already ordered some parts and will do it on a broken PSP I bought

Not sure why you would want to do this over just adding custom firmware. Super cool to see but seems like a lot of work when it can be done in a matter of minutes with CFW.

I saw the original "no cut" mod and thought "Maybe," but then I saw you've got to take most of it's guts out. I love my original PSP, and she still runs beautifully after nearly 19 years. I couldn't take her insides out, and even parts units cost around AU$70. That makes this an expensive tinker. Good on you for your design skills, but I think you underestimate how much those of us who still run them, love them. They're still retaining their value for good reason.

It would be cool to see this on a ps vita or a custom one that slides like the psp go but with like full control support

thats spot on, the PSP Go would be dam near perfect as being totally pocket-able... I second that

This is OK, but I will stick with my Vita. A far superior handheld with a bigger screen, longer battery life, and no modding necessary (well , apart from software, of course.) if I attempted this with my sausage fingers I can guarantee that I would either rip the contacts off the board, or crack the screen, or something. The only way I would get 100% would be to buy 15 of them.

I think what would really give a "reason" to this project is finally allowing PSP to access internet without issues(unlike original) and stream games from PC. That would be just amazing to play modern games on old good PSP. Because as it was described in the video it's rather a curiosity but doesn't add any extra value on top of original console

This is some Spooky stuff right here. Even the intro was terrifying, I love it. 🎮 👻

I don't know if this counts as a "mod", considering there's none of the original hardware there anymore, just the case and buttons. You're not using the Raspberry to upgrade the PSP, you're using the Raspberry to replace the PSP, which is good if the motherboard was already dead, but a waste if the PSP is perfectly repairable, since it's a good console for emulation and homebrew on its own.

This is very cool. But why the hell would someone do this? Why would you kill your console and transform it into a chinese handheld emulation console instead of buying a chinese handheld emulation console for half the price? Unless your PSP is bricked, this is insanity.

I stand by my opinion that this is a terrible and pointless mod. For starters you can install retroarch on a normal PSP. For finishers, it'll play PSP games WORSE than the original hardware. There is literally zero reason to do this. Just put a cm4 in a Retroflag gameboy case. There are 40$ handhelds that are more powerful than this too. Your phone is a better option than this.

I partly agree, the CM5 would blow the PSP out of the park, if he waited a year it would have been 100x better.

PSP will forever be my faborite handheld. I remember before they came out I was in 6th grade and we had an exchange student from China and no BS he had a PSP quite a bit before the launch in the US even happened so once I saw that I just fell in love with it even more. What a marvel it was when it came out, holy. Sooooo sleek too.

This is an awesome mod and I really want one. I have a modded Vita, and the one thing that really sucks is how weak the SOC is to not be able to run PSP at 2x resolution, even though the display could easily support it - so the end result is a blurry mess. It’s also too weak to run all GBA (Pokemon Unbound for example), SNES and N64 games at full-speed, much less even have the ability to use shader options. I love the form factor of the PSP and Vita, I wish I could pocket them, so long as they make all those aforementioned libraries great to run. You could argue for a RP3+, RG505 or any of the other numerous options, but the build quality, comfort and even pocketability is not the same as a PSP. The fact that this can be continuously upgraded with new chipsets makes this a forever device, one that you can always be comfortable playing and pocketing. Not needing to keep up with the endless news of the next cheap Chinese handheld. Thank you Tito for bringing this to my attention, and thank you Adam for your hard work on bringing this amazing passion project to life!!
