Macintosh Crash Sounds

A presentation of the “Crash Sounds” used on Macintosh Computers. These sounds have been known infamously as the “Chimes of Death”.
Today’s Macs don’t play a death chime anymore but rather inform the user in several languages that the computer needs to be reset. While the death chime has been retired, the Sad Mac icon still lives on deep in the underpinnings of OSX.

Travis Anderson this is why you don’t get macs. Well not really, when my pc crashes it glitches if there was a sound playing and plays it really loud and broken. On my old pc sometimes it would randomly glitch the screen play a loud sound then restart. That is why I was scared to use headphones for a few years

Actually Steve Jobs got fired in 1985,and most of the chimes were probably at the time of another CEO,Steve never became CEO until he came back to Apple in 1997(I think)

0:07 - i remember that sound... it was a nightmare because i remember i was about 12 years old and i had been hacking the system file with resedit to replace the startup mac os screen with my own graphic... then when i restarted, i heard that noise and it has been haunting me ever since... i tried everything, extensions off, booting from floppy, etc... in the end, i had to take it back to the apple store to have them fix it :-)

@Haven3000 Well it is just like a Blue Screen of Death on Windows, just not blue though but you will see one if something goes wrong. It saves a log file good for developers that want to investigate the software issue. Since you may still be wondering, here is some more info from Apple. "A kernel panic can be caused by damaged or incompatible software or, more rarely, damaged or incompatible hardware." With that being said I hope you now understand how people will get a kernel panic.

this is the boot sequence error screen tune/screens for pre imac powermacs(power mac 6100 through 9500) and the older MC68000 based macs (Macintosh 128k through quadra 630). Only ever experienced this once when i didnt reseat a SIMM memory module correctly.

It's similar to the BSoD on Windows, SomeOne247. It appears when a Macintosh has a fatal system error, just like the BSoD appears when a Windows OS has a fatal system error.

When the kernel can't fix the problem that's it's been trying to fix, it just brings up the kernel panic screen. Most of the time, you only need to restart to fix the problem though

@dragos240 It's because Mac doesn't usually allow for customization of your system. They also have an inferior compatibility with other programs. But it is those drawbacks that make it seem like Macs are more stable. Windows accepts a lot of things, but it's lenient to the point a lot of things can screw up, because of something you did wrong, or something the program did wrong. I agree, Macs and Windows are the same. Macs don't crash as much because it doesn't allow third party programs.
