When I was a little kid, age5-9, 1947-52, I'd sit on our front porch and watch chain-drive trucks going N on MA route 16. There were dual drive chains, one per side, and I learned 50 years later that the differential sat between the final drive sprockets. The chains were BIG.

damn look at the wear on the drive sprocket, that thing definitely earned it's keep over the years

Sad to say it, but the mileage on that sprocket probably wouldn't be as high as that which is commonly driven in just a few months nowadays. Sure, it might have seen "a lot of use" in its day, but at very slow speeds so not very high mileage. There are good reasons that the use of chain drives was abandoned a long time ago, and very rapid wear is one of them. Not saying it's not a really cool truck, because it is.

When I 1st started driving, we hauled volcanic pumice off the docks in Brpt. Ct. (CILCO Terminal) We hauled off the boats when they came in (2 times a year) Then the rest of the time off the pile. They had 2 or 3 Chain drive MACKS similar to this they used in the yard for salt, scrap & pumice. It was 1972 & they were still using them.

That's when drivers were DRIVERS and tough as nails! Imagine earning a living daily in that.

0:45 Just imagine how much truckers must have invested in chain oil at that time!

Chain drive works. But, wow was it super slow and usually very noisy. It amazes me how chain drive was heavily used on construction site trucks that were in dust and dirt. How often did some poor soul have clean the chain? Still beautiful truck. Glad someone saved one. Because the rest are long gone.

I was lucky enough to be able to haul this thing today, rides pretty rough but that’s expected

eSPeeScotty Imagine how it must sound under full load on some mountain road. Fantastic.

DailyDieselDose So true. To see and hear that fully loaded and climbing up a 10% logging or open pit mine road would truly be an experience. At least you caught that Mack dump truck running and posted it for us...even if the rocks were fake. It's still nice to see and hear the old beauties.

I am assuming chain drives were to gain an extra gear ratio reduction which could not be done effectively in a gear box at the time.

It was a whole lot simpler and cheaper too.

What does the small print on hood say, sir?

Looks to say "Powered by Cummins Diesel"

Fascinating. Never replace a u-joint again. I wonder if the drive chains are adjustable, like motorcycles'.
