Welcome to another episode on my 1982 Mack R686ST also known as truck #17. In this episode we get the tie rod disassembled and painted, the steer axle hubs put on, and we've got some brand-new shiny rims to go along with our aggressive steer tires.
If you enjoyed the video, please give it a thumbs up, it helps the channel a lot!
Leave me comments down below. Tell me what you think about the project or tell me about your own experience in a classic Mack truck.

Thank you for watching and have a good one!
For anyone that would like to know, I purchased the rims from
www.buytruckwheels.com
I'm not affiliated with them in any way shape or form, just wanted to give them a little shoutout after the pleasant experience I had utilizing them as my truck wheel source.

That’s going to be one of the nicest farm trucks! You are fixing everything that was worn on that chassis!

Fortunately we made it through the storm with only minor damage to the house and garage and the power stayed on for the most part. Thanks for watching!

Stay safe !!... woop woop 🥳🥳.... beautiful tyres and rims, they look great !....not a great fan of the balance bags, we have them on the trucks at work, which are twin steer, always have a bit of wobble at some stage.... another big step forward 👌cheers for the great video...

Great job Mr. Oil Farmer you are going to have a nice R model when it is all re-assembled. I am going to look into those 315/80/22.5's for my next set of steers as I drive mostly gravel roads.

Thanks! I don't have any firsthand experience with this specific brand of tire, but I've heard good things and the price is very reasonable in my book as long as they hold up. the 315's don't tend to hydroplane as bad as the 425 flotation tires, but also don't cut into the ground like an 11R does. Thanks for watching!

I love ironman tires. I have those same tires on my drives and they have outlasted all the others on the truck

You’re doing a hell of a job on this project, your care and attention to detail are commendable I’m preparing to dive into a similar project on my 1985 R model, unfortunately finding a set of usable take-out frame rails up here in New England is proving to be very difficult. Not sure if you looked into new rails from Mack, but the price will make your head spin! Look forward to your next video, I’ve watched them all. Keep up the good work 👍🏻

Thank you so much! It was pure luck finding those rails. New ones from mack were out of the question lol. Best of luck with your project!

Are those the original hubs? Did you have to add that spacer in order to run the 315s? Did you have 11R22.5 on the steers originally? Do you think one steering gear will handle the 315s ok? Most trucks with floats have dual boxes. 315s I guess are in between floats and 11R……I ask all these questions because I’m looking to do the same swap on my 94 RD. Thanks.

Originally this truck had spoke hubs on it, long before I bought it they must have been switched over. I'm guessing the wheel seal spacer is a product of changing the hubs from spoke to Budd. I believe one steering gear will handle them just fine. Usually, you see an extra steering gear or bosster cylinder on axles rated for higher weight, therefore needing tires that are rated for more weight. The original steer tires were 11R22.5 yes. If you put the 11Rs next to the 315s there isn't a huge difference. As long as I don't over load the steer axle, I think it will be just fine. Thanks for watching and commenting!
