Mack R686ST/ Truck #17 Restoration Part #4

Finally getting around to laying down some paint on the R model Mack. I am using chassis saver paint for all of the chassis parts of this project. In this video I get most of the parts of the rear axle assembly painted. Very soon after recording the first part of this video, I came to find out that my computer finally let the smoke out. Hence the delay in the upload.

That chassis saver paint looks pretty good. I will use some on a 71 Bronco project I have been sitting on.

I've never had any trouble with it. Of course like any paint, 90% of it is in the prep work.

@@oilfarmer706 right, and I walked around with black patches on me for a month or better, I did a steel staircase, pretty big job. That stuff does work good though, your frame will probably be good for the duration. Love your rig brother, I grew up in the mid 70’s riding a Mack DM800 300 Maxidyne, 6 spd, #55,000 bogies, in the mountains of SEKy. Man coming down those dozer roads after a rain loaded was hairy. The day my uncle said, get your door open,while he’s reaching through the wheel to grab another gear, I was like really ? Yeh, if I tell you to bail out, get out away from the truck. Holy shit, I didn’t say much the rest of the day 😆. Sorry I’m rambling but those ol Mack’s are a big part of the best years of my life. 👍🇺🇸 Thanks again

That's a cool idea! I'll have to look into that. If nothing else I was thinking about putting the LED replacement bulbs on it. I always like the pre cleaner on this truck because I have seen alot of Australian trucks run that type. Thanks for watching!

Done a lot of camel backs idk what your plans are for new insulator pads but go back with rubber no polyurethane!

I hope you are planning on replacing those pinion seals on those rears cause while sand blasting is the way to go that stuff gets into every nook and cranny and eats seals. Are you going to pull the top load units to check your ring gears and pinion gears?How do you like that top loader spray gun? I got to paint a B model Deere tractor and need a new gun to do it with.

Yes I am planning on fully disassembling the rear axles, giving everything a thorough cleaning and inspection, fixing any issues, and resealing everything. The gun isn't bad for how much it costs. I have a nicer, more expensive devilbiss paint gun that I use for when I want a nice smooth shiny finish.
