This is a excerpt from All Or Nothing: The Frank Sinatra Tribute Show Just practicing this in my home since it wasn't included in the original set of performance videos from its debut at The Lebanon Farmer's Market in Lebanon PA.
Mack The Knife - "Mack the Knife", sometimes referred to as "The Ballad of Mack the Knife", is a song first recorded by Louis Armstrong in 1956. It was written by Bertolt Brecht.
Frank Sinatra first recorded this jazz legacy in his 1984 album L.A. Is My Lady (album)L.A. Is My Lady. This version was later released as one of Sinatra's last singles. He later recorded the song with Jimmy Buffett in 1994 for Duets II. A live performance of "Mack the Knife" can be found on Sinatra Saga as well.
It's recorded as Sinatra sang it at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas, with his original instrumentation of The Count Basie Orchestra. This is not a traditional karaoke background, but a sophisticated algorithm that removes the vocal from any song. This leaves just the horns and reeds, as Sinatra intended in the background.
So Still touring at age 78, Mid 1990s. Tom Dreesen, a comedian who opened for Frank and started shining shoes in Jersey and one day wound up working 13 years opening for Frank and then eventually carrying Frank's coffin out of a church, tells one of the most magnificent stories of Frank. They were performing at The Mark auditorium in 1990, and everyone on the tour was wondering when Mr S would hang it up. Tom opened for him and it went great. Frank came out and was off to a good start, but by about the 3rd song started to forget the lyrics. He just blanked. Couldn’t remember them. He started saying “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.” The band, started to realize it too, and the instruments dropped out one by one. Frank kept saying, "Im sorry. Im so sorry."
Tom was stage left and thought Ok this is time to hang it up. He kept saying I’m sorry, he turned and began to walk off stage and Tom thought OK it’s over, Im gonna go get him and say, Its been a great career, lets go home.
But then a guy stood up way in the back and said, “It’s Ok Frank, It’s Ok because we love you. We love you Frank.” He started to appluad and then the guy next to him and then suddenly the whole arena was cheering. Frank turns around and heads back to the center of the stage and sang this next song I’m about to sing. And Frank nailed it. Every nuance and every note. The crowd kept cheering long after the song and Frank, pauses and says, "I love you too sir." He finished the set and went on to sing for another 2 years after that. That guy doesn’t know it, but he gave Frank Sinatra yet another comeback.
