So often factory tours do this thing of wowing the audience with all the - magic - of the assembly line but no real engineering is shown. One rarely see a Tool Making shop in operation, for instance. All those grippers and nesting blocks, need to be designed and manufactured as well. I know 50 years ago, I did Tool Design for Manufacturing, so many(just short of, all) had no idea what that was about. Then today, you hear it, so authoritatively spoken, that "things" should be "3D printed". Even something like a fastening clip, which are spat out of a complex progressive die, at the rate of 100's per minute. "3D print it", I've heard it said. This video, was like seeing a headline for a tour of the Lego factory, and only seeing, packaging operations. Which does involve Toolmaking in any case. BTW the second chapter, is not a "stamping" operation.

older than 2022 model year but still a good video. These are pre 19/20 model year Macks. Almost all Macks now come with the Anthem interior as well as the one piece DEF systems for the exhaust. I would love to see an updated video for the newer trucks it would be cool. As for the Medium Duty Portion that is new.

I can tell you that so much has changed! We no longer get the chassis w/axles on it. We start w/bare rails, install all the components underside wile te chassis is upside down. Then the whole thing gets flipped over to continue down the line to get engine, cab, etc. The plant sure has changed over the years

Many of the class 8 still have drum brakes. It is still very common, however there are more & more getting discs. And we rarely use manual transmissions anymore. Whatever the customer wants, they get. Every Mack is built to customer spec. Not like all the others. Mack is a "custom"truck from the start.

My first Mack was an over-the-road Mack converted to a dump truck. It was a 1978 Mack. After 40 years I couldn't find parts for it anymore so I retired it. I then bought a 2006 Mack tri-axle dump truck 18 speed. Wouldn't have it any other way.

WHEN i was a kid I had a drive of an N.R MACK ex U.S. army. I thought I was in heaven and always wanted one. In later years a friend of mine powered a car with a steam unit. It was and still would be the lowest emission vehicle in the world.The car went to America and demonstrated to senators and all vehicle mfrs. What happened? Nothing Mack advertised for suggestions how some of their manufacturing could be carried out in the Pacific area and I sent them full details. Same response. Had somebody at Mack had the guts to take it on the dog would be the best truck in the world by a long shot.

In the early 70's the company where I worked made the exhaust system for each truck mfg.for the factory in Hayward CA. In the early 70's they were building 25 to 30 trucks a day .

I've got a 1997 Mack ch613 double frame dump truck with 8LL and e7 350 engine. Excellent fuel economy for what it is. I don't turn it up. The steering box is a Sheppard m100 and it's pouring from the weep hole. They are on back order and some places can get one in 2-3 weeks for more money. A shop in atlanta claims i can drop the steering box off and for $750 I can pick up up after a full day. Not sure what to do but the shop says they are the rebuilder for many contracts of parts sellers. Maybe I'll do that. I don't really like the drip rail seam on top of cab as the paint is flaking off and the weld or putty has a little bit of a sketchy look to it. I'm gonna have to sort that out soon to make sure I get no rust. The low air pressure buzzer isn't working. Got to disassemble the gauge cluster to find it. Also, the air horn up valve on the driver side has a big line on the outlet and tiny on the inlet. I have to sort that out. Front windows are starting to get a glaze. I'm a little nervous about what new windshields will cost me on this fancy wrap around windshield two piece design. But I really like the truck. It's beefy but a little slow. I baby the hell out of it. I try to be as smooth as butter in every shift, turn, and try to use the brakes the least I can. I use it for my excavating business. Has 385k miles on it. I don't think I'd ever find a nicer same model old truck with less wear in 2023.

For whatever reason, when I drive the virtual Mack Anthem in American Truck Simulator, I end up tipping the cab. The engine likes to kick on some turbo to 'help out'. If I'm climbing some winding mountain roads, anything can happen in the game. What's the real one like?

Mack predominantly uses CNG. There is even a CNG compressor on site to fill the CNG trucks we build

As a LVO employee, I can tell you it is well into the millions, it not higher. There are about 50 different zip ties mainly used, but we have another 20-30 that have specific applications. Probably nearly 1k or more per truck.

I can say every Mack class 8 is built right here in PA. Yes, parts are interchangeable, but they are with most brands as there are only a select few companies that manufacture parts for all the class 8 trucks

Still lots of old school techniques, processes and tooling in that first plant. Not near as modern and updated as I expected a US plant to be. I wonder how it’s productivity compares with other manufactures in other locations.

It's better to use old school technology. You get more people employed. All these robotic production lines do not help humanity at all. Also I think quality wise you should get a better product. All those Rolls Royces and Astin Martins are built by human beings and not robots.

@@nelsonchinasamy9857 I am not complaining about the number of people being used. I am pointing out the poor processes and techniques being used on the line. Lots of inefficient movements and ergonomics which are slowing things down with extra steps, with workers needing to use awkward hand and body movements and positioning resulting in functional inefficient assembly. There are much better ways to optimize how those workers are moving around for parts installation. Robots have their place, however, there are still many places people are better than robots. By designing the line for better vehicle/component worker access to the areas needing parts installation is important for overall productivity, employee health and safety and quality control. Two areas where I saw major people process issues were the paint shop and the frame wiring/hose/piping installations. There was a lot of reoccurring money costs and manpower utilization issues there. Many of the other guys are doing it better than Mack, and it shows in the finished product. And not in a good way.

Lots of variation in production of heavy trucks and value of using lots of automotive style technology is just not there at the industry volumes, 45 years of experience in heavy trucks. Labor is the cheapest way and truckers love options. At one time building 100 units a day off the line, working every work day, after 30 years it was technically possible to never see two identical units including color (4500 or more available), engine, transmission, battery box size and locations, tanks, etc.

Which plant did you work for. I spent years in the Hagerstown Powertrain Plant including the change of the name on the label. All global engine production for Volvo comes out of that plant, Volvo label only. Nearly all truck parts come from same makers the stamped Mack on them before. Forgot that was 45 years and now a proud Mack/Volvo retiree.

You mean VOLVO factory making Volvo trucks and sticking on a MACK emblem. Volvo is not an American company. If you drive a modern Volvo or Mack truck, bring along a box or two of spare fuses, you are going to need them. And learn how to open the hood from the outside under the front wheel area as the plastic hood latch always breaks inside the truck. This is in very new less than 100K trucks.

The owner operator with the quality of their junk and bulshit with warrenties were the ones that pay our bills and depend on it to feed our families how could you depend on a piece of junk when every month it is at the dealership for something that was built at the factory. Its only as good as the people that build it i owned 3 new ones 15 yrs of buying a mack 2 were good the last one put me out of business because of the quality of the junk you guys on the top are all alike worried about your butt but not the little guy that keep you guys in busines and have to keep up with their busines its a crime you guys cant be trusted becuse the dealer blames the factory or are the dealrs jerks. Its all bull shit time is money no wonder yas are in a decline in busines becuse ya put high class junk out there and dont care about the guy that pays his bills corpt greed only their not for the owner operator ya forgot how ya got were your at the little guy is history thanks to the junk ya build. We are required steel toe shoes, safety glasses, and all the OSHA required things. Yes, we can wear shorts if we choose to. But even the sneakers we wear are steel toe

I was told by a factory rep who retired from his name was phil styerwald i got to deal with over a15 yr peroid of owning the last junk. The first 2 trucks i bought lived up to my expectaions but the last one put me out of business because of the quality what a joke i hope they go out of busines thanks for the junk quality or shall say b s not made by the american co ya sold us out big time the american worker ya get what ya derserve out of business
