Up close with Mack's M917A3 Heavy Dump Trucks for the U.S. Army

This week we’re on the road again, as Mack Defense recently invited us out to experience the delivery of the first production M917A3 Heavy Dump Trucks, or HDTs, to the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Reserve. They were the first to roll off the company’s new production line at the Mack Experience Center in Allentown, Pa.
Mack should feel right at home producing vehicles for the Army because the company’s trademark bulldog nickname was earned in 1917 during World War I. Mack delivered several thousand trucks in Europe at that time, and the British soldiers, when facing daunting terrain, would yell to “Send in the Mack Bulldogs” because of the trucks’ blunt-nosed hood and reputation for durability. It reminded them of their country’s mascot, the British Bulldog.
These new HDTs are a big deal for both the Army and for Mack, as these HDTs are actually the first new Heavy Tactical Wheeled Vehicles the U.S. Army has added to its portfolio in 12 years. In fact, according to Army officials during the event, the Army's current dump truck fleet includes some variants that are nearly 50 years old, so these trucks are quite a welcome addition to the fleet.

Nice truck! I would like to see them working here in the USA and not in Afghanistan or Iraq where we spent trillions of dollars building stuff for people that hate us and then give them the trucks and equipment! Build those for the American public without the armor of course. I can think of a lot of jobs where an all wheel drive truck would really come in handy.

Mack at one time supplied engines for the old viet nam era 5 ton cargo trucks. I believe they were similar to the Maxi dyne since they could be lugged down and keep pulling. The one I drove in the Army reserve s had a lot more power than the old multi fuels

R/T radial tyres . . . a front 4-Dr Crew Cab instead of the standard 2-Dr Regular Cab among others . . . the MACK Granite M917A3 8X8 + 5.0 in. Lift 13.2 TDI I8 4-Dr Crew Cab All Terrain Tactical Truck (LHD) in military spec would do great as a cross country camper vehicle . . .

The price per truck varies with each lot ordered, but they run around USD$440,000 each, with a total contract value (with stuff such as spares and training included) of USD$296M for up to 683 trucks.

If they would simply make a straight chassis, and plain drive train, and a bare bones engine that one could pull out a few bolts or pins, to swap out the engine/power plant, that would make a really solid military rig.. But no, they gotta throw the kitchen sink at the dang things, as if the EPA compliance on 400 units will ever add up to anything worth to complain about... Nope, lets manufacture 390K hours worth of combines parts manufacturing to save $0.03 cents per gallon on efficiency ... LOL....

Mack announced that the M917A3 has Meritor ProTec Series 50 rear axles and a Meritor MTC-3220FV (TC-142) transfer case. The rear axles have the usual inter-axle differentials of a tridem set, so they don't interfere with turning corners. The truck is described as "AWD", which usually suggests a centre differential or slip clutch, but I haven't found any indication that the MTC-3000 series has that; with a centre diff turning corners would not be an issue, and even without it shifting to RWD only (which would normally be used on paved surfaces) eliminates any problem. Some Meritor and Mack documents include "TC-142" in parentheses after the MTC-3220FV model name. Meritor acquired Fabco and their product line in 2017, and the Fabco TC-142 in the TC-142PD version is a full-time transfer case with a centre differential (the "PD" option means "proportioning differential"); The PD has 50/50 or 26/74 front-to-rear torque distribution, and this application would use the 26/74. That would allow free turning around corners, but the standard TC-142 does not have a centre differential, just a front axle disconnect. The problem turning will be the tridem axle set with none of those three axles steering. Other tridem military trucks (such as the M1070 HET) steer the rearmost axle for this reason.
