Hi! Today we have ANOTHER comparsion starring Mackie, we compare Mackie CR4 with Presonus Eris E4.5. Mackie CR4 is slightly smaller and cheaper than Presonus E4.5, so let's check out which one is worth Your money. Presonus E4.5 in my opinion is much better build and finished, enclosure is more rigid as is the front panel of E4.5. Presonus also has extensive tone controls, You can control treble, midrange and bass levels in E4.5 to tune it to Your liking and Your room, plus it has useful low frequency filter that makes matching with subwoofer much easier. Mackie lacks any tone controls what so ever except for the general volume control. CR4 has slightly less audible hiss from the tweeters, but they both will be audible from a closup in quiet rooms while idling. Soundwise they are much closer to each other, sporting similar sound siugnature with just minor differences. The most notable differences are in the bass response and upper midrange. Presonus has deeper and more natural sounding bass with less mid and upper bass boost than Mackie. CR4 can be annoyingly boomy when placed on the desk. Regarding the midrange, Mackie has more forward upper midrange tha creates the feeling of clarity while Presonus seem to be more balanced betwen the upper and the lower midrange. Mackie also has a problem of lower midrange colouration and the resonant front panel of CR4 is the responsible one here. Presonus can play louder than Mackie without showing audible distortion. Overall I have to give a slight edge to E4.5 for it sound performance. As You probably already know Presonus is a better monitor in my opinion, not only it is much better build but it also has more natural and honest sound than Mackie CR4, so if You are in the market for studio monitors under 200 dollars than E4.5 gets my recommendation. If You can not stretch Your budget that far, than Mackie CR4 is still a solid proposition though. What do You think? Which one would You choose and why? Let me know in the comments below! Cheers!

I just want to say a big thank you so much for all your hard work. I have just bought the Presonus 4.5 speakers and I think they sound fantastic. I have been a so called audiophile for 45 years and I think the value for money with these is absolutely ridiculous. Years ago I purchased speakers that were a lot more expensive and didn’t sound as good. These are not just for studio monitoring but great for listening to music as well.. thanks again. 😊

Mackie sounds more precise, best response and warmer, I feel that the quiet songs in the mackie sounds very natural (the voice is awesome), in mid and high frequencies the winner is mackie, but the bass is some muddy. For metal and rock I prefer the mackie, I think if I buy the 4,5 the bass response should be better. I dont do material with much bass, so, mackie is better for me.
@KarolDst5 жыл бұрын
The Eris' are clearer and a bit wider. Mackies are sharper but the bass is muddy.
@williamtael83794 жыл бұрын
Precisely! I've noticed that guitars sound overshadowed by the bass and an echo or something.
@Esefedege2 жыл бұрын
Theyre not wider as both are 70hz - 20k Hz monitors. The difference surely is the little EQ from 75 hz to 95Hz mackie has
@KarolDst2 жыл бұрын
@@Esefedege i meant the wideness/depth of the perceived sound
@Esefedege2 жыл бұрын
@@KarolDst well, that depends on the ear and if they used Silk and Kevlar as materials too (also wood). It also depends on how flat they actually are, thats bc of the EQ Mackie has on those frequencies i told you, it's totally different live because we don't really know how the monitors were placed for this video and the difference between what the microphone captures and what our ears capture. I'd say they're almost the same, Mackie does good in the mid-high range but that EQ from 75 to 95Hz aprox. May make it muddier on the low end. For just a little bit more you could get some KRK Rokit CI5 G3 wich are really good and go under 45Hz, it's a really low difference for a wider range and bigger monitor (just 1 inch)
@Esefedege2 жыл бұрын
@@KarolDst I've been a Mackie MR5 MK3 user for about 3 years now, just sold them today. Gotta say, once you test those Mackies you'll notice how good they do when they reach 45Hz, incredible balance, but not at all the same price. The CR4 may have that good definition, but i wouldn't trust it's capacities trying to get that 45Hz definition the MR5 MK3 have because it's not gonna be there. Editing low freqs and monitoring low end may become difficult, even tho i've never tried them the range is what i don't like.

Mackie is much warmer and rounded, Presonus sounds harsh and tinny. Presonus seems to have slightly more bass, but the midrange just seem to be a bit empty by comparison. Thanks for this direct comparison, was currently trying to decide between the two. Listening on M1060 headphones through a Little Dot Mk3.

I have the same thoughts as you. In addition Mackie is more bass heavy tune. And to cover its very low bass performance they also tuned up 95 - 75 Hz band. this support the flatter Presonus. I also think Mackie "Mackie bass sounds a bit muddier IMHO. -Jim" same. Listened on 0bjective2+ODAC+HD650

Out of these two, the e4.5 is more accurate and neutral and it passes more (useful) information/details for sound engineering, whereas the cr4 is more natural sounding, less harsh than e4.5. It would take some time to get accustomed to and accept neutral speakers and headphones (but then you will also start disliking bass focused stuff, like JBLs &Co. straight out of the box, with no EQ tweaking). So if you are just a listener, then cr4 might be your choice, but if you plan to work with the sound and recordings, the e4.5 would be a better choice here, imo. And, the e3.5 with a sub would be even better.

I own a pair of CR4s and I really like them. Definitely used to them as have been using them daily for 3.5 years. Looking for a new pair of monitors and the Presonus sound great in this video. They are pretty close but also different. It’s interesting how certain genres sound better on one or the other. Your mixes could end up being so different depending on which set you have. I liked the retro wave and the hard rock/metal one on the Mackie more but over all preferred the Presonus.

Yes you are right. I found real instruments sound better on CR4 and Presonus is a bit compressed and electronic music sounds better on them. I just bought the CR4 from a person as unwanted gift for £30 on ebay not arrived yet.. I think it is not a bad deal. I am curious what they are like. At the moment I have a pair of Numark, I think CR4 will be much better than them.

The Mackies have deeper bass, higher highs, but sound kind of scooped. The Presonus (which I own) do not have the deep bass like the Mackies, but still have nice punch, and much more midrange, with smooth highs. Also remember the newer Presonus have a Mid and a High control knob, an Acoustic Space switch for when the speakers are to close to a wall and a switch for use with a subwoofer; 60Hz, 80Hz, and 100Hz I believe. The old ones only have a Bass and Treble knob so watch for what you're getting. The Mackies, have no controls :-(

This is a great sound-off - but it makes the Mackie and PreSonus sound somewhat competitive. Let me just say, they're not even close. I had the Mackie CR4 then I got the Presonus Eris 4.5 BT straight after. Compared to the Eris - the Mackie's are like two dog turds wired together - they're sub-standard Chinese rubbish and they stink. Don't get me started on the massive overheating problem the Mackie's have - it matters not, they're in a class well below PreSonus. I'm absolutely blown away by the Eris 4.5 BT. Clean. Crisp. Perfect, without muddy lows and hissy highs. Everything in-between perfect - and that's all you need. I'm even thinking about going larger in the Eris range to handle my general listening needs. They're that good. It's all in the ear of the beholder, but make sure you listen to these things compared and don't rely solely on sound tests. You'll be amazed. Try a complex piece of music with complex sonic breadth - maybe some post-rock, Kids Will Be Skeletons (Mogwai)? God is an Astronaut perhaps - the Mackies get bogged-down and confused, PreSonus however is just clear interpretation and beautiful. I'll give the Mackie's some credit - they're a reasonable general listening set-up with warm bass and a broad mid-range. But that's it. Save your money and invest in PreSonus. You won't regret it PS: Do I have any affiliation with PreSonus? No. Nothing at all - I'm just very impressed I chose them.Thank God.

Thanks for this video. I don't know why I'm always looking for someone's opinion on gear. Really appreciate the completely unbiased "listen and decide for yourself approach". For what it's worth to anyone, what I brought away from this video is that the mackies sound a bit more like home stereo speakers. the presonus don't necessarily sound as enjoyable to listen to, but they for sure sound clearer and much more defined than the mackies. the low end on the mackies is a bit too boosted for accurate monitoring.

I real good comparison would be to add the Presonus Eris Sub8 subwoofer, the combo between the Eris 4.5 in addition is killer! They clearly have much better high and mid end’s, adding the Eris sub 8 puts the combo over the top, a must for recording... Well done though, Thank you. The Mackie’s bass is just too muddy.

Depends on what you do. If you just listen to music, then, indeed, Mackie. if you record&mix, then Eris is a better choice out of the two. I had both and stayed with Eris. It has bass boost on the back side and you can tweak both with an EQ. What you can't tweak - details/useful information and that cr4 filters some out, which is well audible in this video. With that respect the e4.5 is better for mixing, projecting a cleaner and more neutral image. (Though the e3.5 with a sub would be even better, imo).

Mackie CR4 high-mids seem to be somewhere in the middle between Presonus 3.5 and 4.5 ... which is pretty logical, considering the size relation 3.5, 4, 4.5 :D So, 3.5 might sound a bit too shrill and "into your face" when it comes to voices, while 4.5 could be lacking some details in voices. The Mackie's are too hyped in the high midrange. The Eris are smoother across the spectrum which is how monitors are supposed to sound.

Presonus sounds more open and natural, mackies sound a bit as if something was holding them back so to speak

I'm searching something like that due to my budget and needs, which do you suggest for bulding quality, durability and most important sound quality ?

E4.5 is my choice

As a Rock guitarist I feel the Mackie CR4's have a little more punch and bring out the bass a bit more on Full Speed 7:05 I'm looking for my first set of monitors, and the Mackies sound like they handle rock and metal better (although i think CR5's are now the current gen) Nice Vid \m/

I guess after two years of mixing one might decide for a neutral sound and more clarity and useful details, right?

thanks. I like a Lsr305 for mixing, and like s2000pro for listening and movies. i have both. They are great speakers! Lsr 305 have a nice mids, but bass is poor than Edifier, s2000pro hava a nice bass but mids is not good like in a Jbl's. What you think about it?

Do they still have the hum problem, the Eris 4.5?
@AquaTunes5 жыл бұрын
Do not listen to the rumors. :D They only have Hum like every other Studio Monitor, if you don´t connect them the right way to the Balanced Input, or Hiss if you put a Wifi Station directly at them. Perfect way is to use a good Audio Interface with Balanced Output, you get good Quality very cheap now days, M Audio m Track, or Focusrite Scarlet as an example. Only People that don´t know how to use Studio Monitors correctly get Hum or Hiss, not only with the Presonus, but with most of the Studio Monitors out there. Hum and Hiss is 90% not the Speakers, it is 90% the lack of Knowledge of the one that Connect them to soemthing, because they don´t know how to shield them from Electrical Net Ground Noise. Never ever use RCA Cables on Studio Monitors is a first Step. :D

@@DSAUDIOreview I mean it's just as pointless to compare speakers with that logic, it's always limited to what's coming out of their speakers at home. If the person already has a subwoofer, they'll be able to get an "idea" of what it pushes out just like with these videos.
