Warning, this is the longest most personal comment I have ever posted🥳 Steven, What a wonderful podcast. Macklemore, all I hope that you will get from this comment is.... Your Dad has way more tools to have that conversation than you give him credit for. My Dad died in 2013 at 74. Out of all the kids in the later years. He and I gelled together best, I was his caregiver. And we are a lot alike. When I was 40ish. My Dad sat at the end of the kitchen table and he apologized to me about the time he gave me my first and only spanking for not coming home from the neighbor's house after they had called and called...I may have been 12. He was a blue-collar worker, Alpha male, provider, but a great Daddy. As he was telling me that story he had tears in his eyes. He had carried that guilt for three decades....I said Dad.....it sounds like it was a well-deserved spanking. But I dont remember it. AT ALL. He said really??? And I said NO, so put that away, no more feeling bad about that. And who knows maybe it kept me from becoming an out-of-control teenage girl. His face took on a peace I cant explain. Sometimes we need words of affirmation from our parents and sometimes they need it from us. He died knowing that I thought he hung the moon. His last words on his deathbed to me were all about taking care of Mama....he didn't remember that he left money for her he told me where some quarters were in a coffee can if we hit hard times. And I told him ...Dad you were such a good worker in the last years you saved a lot of money for Mama...he said ...I did??? And I said yes. Mama is going to be just fine you did right by her and all us kids. I saw that same peace come over his face. Once again he needed confirmation/affirmation.....but because he had terrible lung cancer that spread to his brain he thought we were destitute. By the way Mama has now passed too and I have that coffee can full of quarters and will forever. Point is... talk to your Dad... he is carrying guilt...I guarantee it. Who knows how long any of us have...but for all of us. life is nearing to an end...he should not have to carry that if you have forgiven him. And I know you wouldn't want him to. Much love young man, sounds like you are doing great things. 🙏 We may be old but give us some credit here.....we have the tools. 🥰

@@santander6317 Christianity was never about religion. Souls get forgiven and saved for real. Sous go down to hell, paying for their sins for themselves for real. Christ came to set an example how to live for real and He died for all of our sins for real. Rapture - real life even soon to take place. Tribulation (Jacob's trouble) - real life event - soon to take place. Real GOD and His real promises: 1.)Outwardly peace 2.) wisdom and understanding about heavenly thinks 3.) providing food and clothing, expecting souls to seek out His Kingdom. 4.) Protection against every weapons which shall be formed against us. 5.) Free gift = eternal life. What spot about Christianity seems religious? GOD is real, humans are real, earth is real. etc. Logic says, what`s real, means reality. The facts about religions : 1 = all are lies/ false ways to heaven. 2 = all origin from masons. I'm a chronic alcoholic, got diagnosed by the time I was 18 (no slow descent), have had over decade-long sobriety and also shorter periods sprinkled with relapse. Tried so so hard so many ways to be normal. So have given that "why" question a lot of thought most of my life. Macklemore gave the most accurate answer I've ever heard, and I worked in the addiction treatment field for 10 years, met a lot of well educated professionals. Everyone always wants to find an event, a trauma, a bad childhood or chemical imbalance to blame. Those things may trigger reaching for it to begin with, but the compulsion happens in the absence of all of those as well.

I have always said I was born an addict. I'm 68 now. Yes, it was drugs but I get addicted to everything I do. I never do a little of anything life offers. I do the max. It's great if it's a good thing, but it wasn't always. I'm clean today, except for methadone, for 18 years. That has been unbreakable because Drs think withdraw is the same as other opiates. It isn't. My young addiction caused hepc all the way through to liver transplant. Dr's and many people don't understand addict and think all you need is will power. Not so. But life is good. I'm alive.
@amyc.peters1064 Жыл бұрын
People really really don't understand, even when they have their own struggles with food or sex or whatever! That's why it's so important we connect with each other, so thanks for your response. I see you❤️. Doctors always underestimate withdrawals. I came off antidepressants 9 months ago (I was on them 8 years) and am still getting some withdrawal symptoms. Psych had said here's a 2 week titer you should be good in a month. HA Yah and if you have liver damage, and or brain damage, any auto immune/ inflammatory condition, if your brain is hardcore wired to function with a certain drug, it takes a huge amount of time to get right again! Psych industry and habit management have us all by the tits. Some Drs care but are misinformed, some have figured it out but just don't care cuz $$ before people. It's depressing. We need to support one another. 🤗

What a blessing you are Steven for men and women who are willing to be raw, open, honest, confront the truth of whatever addiction/challenges they are experiencing. This is a podcast that needs to be shared, talk about, watch, listen to, and be a great blueprint for all shows out there. The world needs authentic storytelling, conversations, and true connection that brings transformation and long-lasting change. We’re ready to move past the symptoms of our suffering and finally feel free to feel joy, love, acceptance, celebration, and abundance. Life is beautiful when we trust the process, allow creativity to come through us by feeling our pain. I’m freakin’ grateful for mine brought me back to healing the pain I buried for decades and didn’t even know I was numbing it because I thought I was the only one struggling. That’s a painful thing to go through for any child/teenager and then affect us in our adulthood. Blessings everyone and know that we’re all in this together.❤ Always be gentle because the artist is a child.❤

Hello to you both I remember dancing with my kids in the kitchen to this gentleman's music. Thankyou for the happy thought/memory tethered to your music.😀 Will most definitely have a wee listen to your new album, and will continue dancing with my new dance partner my amazing baby Granddaughter. Appreciate this shared discussion, from my role as both a Mum of now adult children who have had similar experience. And as a Mental Health Addiction Nurse of nearly two decades. Just want to share the fact that my daughter twenty two years beautiful has battled hard over passing years as a wee troubled kid and at times as a young lady. With self damaging behaviours including self harm and alcoholism. She very nearly lost her beautiful life having had a near fatal bicycle accident mid January of this year. Sure as her Mum I was daft enough, maybe even willfully blind to think this would be a new chapter for her, new clear path to recovery, wellbeing certainty all encompassing health. Sure she was alcohol free on discharge from hospital. I WANTED my daughter to grow a different life out of this near LOSS experience, caused by alcohol and her subsequent accident. However this bliss was sadly short lived. My daughter has very recently returned to alcohol and I'm scared for her a wee big bit. But think, can only hope if nothing else that it's NOT too late and all is not lost! But even I was devastated for a wee minute or two on knowing she had returned to this pattern of almost self destruction in so many ways. However grateful for my daughter and our open and honest wee family relationship, if you like. Addiction needs more resource! After thirteen years of Addiction nursing I know our current provision for this vulnerable patient group is poor and NOT working. People including my daughter currently find 'I can only imagine' their substance of Addiction more powerful to combat ever over their own life and other risks of loss at times. So much more to say, but so much more needs doing to change it, too. I really am grateful for your shared work. 💜

The more I see these types of videos the more I understand that many entrepreneurs have a strong tendency towards addiction. Many say its an escape from their own mind. Many people that have ADHD self medicate to quieten their minds. Those with ADHD have brilliant ideas and can literally achieve anything but my god its intense inside the brain.

Listening along to this with goosebumps.. such honesty and clarity about addiction.. I worked the 12 step program and still working it today and my life has never been better… alcohol filled a void and helped me escape myself for so many years until it stopped working. I’m so lucky I found my surrender and the actual weight that was lifted from my shoulders that I never knew I was carrying was a miracle in itself. We do not chose a life of addiction, using is a symptom of our malady and when/if we stop we have to relearn how to live life on life’s terms and learn to love ourselves.. service, unity, recovery.. peace my brother. 🙏🏻❤️

Being Authentic doesn't mean a conversation has to be structured - it just means you start someone. Go for it, have that conversation with your Dad Steven. I think this is one of my absolute favourite interviews. I don't know who Macklemore is, but what a joy to listen to him - He strikes straight to your heart. Wow common sense from ground up. This really spoke to my heart and I am nearly 50. Thank You Macklemore and boy if you start up a centre for those in need who have been deprived in one way or another - those coming from poverty you are going to reach so many heart and give so much amazing hope and gratitude. You are already a legacy - a beautiful human being. Keep it going, Steven I love the way you just keep growing on these pods. I watch all your pods, I was into Brian Rose but he went into money and politics and his pods changed. Good luck to Brian but I think your in his spot right now in the UK keep it real sweetpea. Also loved you on dragons den when you shocked everyone and undercut the deals and negotiated from 5 percent to 7 percent. Life isn't all about the money. Some of the happiest people I know are the people in service - cleaning our bins, sweeping our streets, cleaning up our communities because lets face it, the government are not doing there job properly. Building new houses is one thing, but taking away the essence of community is defeating our communities right there, no sports places for the young, closing down good schools and colleges unless you have the money to pay for it and the list goes on and on...But the reason why I love life is because there is still so much to do and life has so much to give at every turn. Macklemore says it well, every time you have an obstacle, look at it like medicine we keep healing ourselves and we grow from these things, or we can witness real connection. Life is really a beautiful thing in hindsight. Well done btw your best mates done well - peace love and light to him . Loving this interview I am beaming thank you all.

I grew up in a family that had alcohol addiction, and I stayed away from alcohol so I would not have that battle. While growing up I went to Al-Anon and surprisingly when I went with a friend to his AA, I learned so much more. Sitting there and listening to the person with the addiction speak openly was very enlightening and helpful. I went back several times and I was worried people would think I had a problem or I would judge them. I let that worry go because I really wanted to understand and I decided what others think of me is less important than improving my quality of life.

I must say that finding out that you are having a child is a junction in life and the road you take from there on is monumental. Totally relate to the conversation about your dad. I had the best childhood ever, my parents were a great team and gave me everything. However they weren’t very emotionally available and I struggle to open up to them about a lot of things. They were very much about ‘keeping up appearances.’ No parent is perfect and it’s weighing up the good with the bad. Hoping the the new generation of parents (my generation I’m 32) can open up and be a sounding board more for their kids 🤞🏻 so so important. Having awkward conversations help us grow!

I am learning so much. I really liked the theme about authenticity at the end - doing what we like, what inspires us is the best way to live life. Good to hear the mention of Al-Anon - another brilliant 12 step fellowship - a lifeline and support to people in very difficult circumstances.

Thank you Steven. This among your other videos i’ve listened to, has been inspiring yes, but as a ‘young’ older person very reassuring. The depth of character and emotional intelligence shown gives me hope for the world to come. Thank you for the incredible range of personalities and your very skilful interviewing style, bringing out the very best in these podcast.👏🏽👏🏽🙏🏼

What a touching and profound conversation! Mack was sharing his experiences directly from his soul. Having such a great listener made it easier. No judgment from his part, but great understanding. Thank you both for such a great interview.

He'll never read this, but eff I am so grateful to him for this interview. It's set me off on a whole new way of thinking about the shite I'm currently in the middle of, and given me some roads I might turn down to get out. What an incredibly honest and vulnerable interview from an artist I admire very much. Thank you. Thank you.

Addiction is one of those things I don’t wish upon anyone even my worst enemy What’s concerning is that modern technology is making low grade addictions commonplace It’s vital that on an individual level you create strategies to try and combat this and return to your natural state and brain’s ability to focus - this is my mission with my content 💪⚡️💙

OMFG I am so glad I listened to this interview in its entirety, which is I think the first one I have ever listened to properly and be re-listening too at least once more. Your songs (especially a couple of your most recent) have spoken to me personally regarding the life I am living at moment with addiction but, and I thank you full heartedly, the way u talk about your relationship with your dad is something that will be taking on board, rethinking about and trying to act upon for the future. Thank you, again, you truly are an inspiration to me!!!
