But what you have to remember is that the OS uses the GPU to do that scaling. So while you have scaling turned on, any other program that uses the GPU will run more slowly. There are videos out there from people who have tested this.

I understand these options that you've explained here. Since it's a "user preference", why cant we change screen "resolution" or scale factor and font/text size independently from each other, ie I want 1920x1080px res but I want smaller text too... Or is there a way to do this that I'm not aware of...? Or do we just accept that this is Apple's middle finger to actual user preference?

For what you are describing you have Windows 10 that do exactly that, which does introduces itself to a slew of issues. @ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 3 жыл бұрын
This is a difficult question to answer because it is based on perception. Personally for me, I like it better on a 4K because the pixel binned so you get more pixel that represents the original pixel. Some have issues with this and consider the text blurry, so it all depends, it may or may not give you clarity advantage. @fr3238
@fr3238 3 жыл бұрын
No, you won't lose any sharpness at "Looks like 1080p". If you have a 4K display like here, macOS will alway use the native 4K resolution on the display. The way scaling works in macOS is that when you set the resolution in Pref. Displays to "Looks like 1080p", macOS will render everything at 4x (2x in each direction) the resolution internally, and then scale it back to the native resolution of the display, which is 4K. In the case with "Looks like 1080p" the system won't have to scale the internal rendering to 4K since it already is rendered in 4K. This way everything will look exactly as sharp as if you use the resolution "Looks like 3840 times 2160", but everything will look twice as big in each direction. It will be the size of 1080p but have the sharpness of 4K. If you chose looks like "3008 times 1692" then macOS will internally render everything in 6016 x 3384 and then scale it back to 4K before displaying it on the screen. So, macOS does a great job of scaling as sharply as possible, but on a 4K display the "Looks like 1080p" or "Looks like 3840x2160" will be the most performant alternatives since integer scaling can be used. Other alternatives will have to rely on fractional scaling which is slower. Fractional scaling will also be a tiny bit less sharp, but it will be hard to tell.

@Rodrigo Marco, what dell model do you have? I would test this out with another display hook up to this Mac, or hook up this Mac to another display and see if the behavior is the same. All of this depends on the displays and what resolution it can take. macOS does all of the work in the backend to calculate these options. So tell me your Dell display Model, your Mac Model, the cable that you are using to link the display to your Mac and we'll go from there.

@Achilles, there's really no point scaling in QHD. Most of the time at max resolution that is where your display should run at. This is more of a solution for 4k displays. You can force your QHD to show 4K equivalent but that is pushing the video card to much and does not make sense to do so.

No. It's not the same for any other 4K monitors. The scaling option shown at 2:14 is only available at some 4K monitors with a specific resolution profile. If you do some research, there're many people who're struggling to get that option with their 4K monitors.

Yes on the newer OS that are some that does not show up. But this is not a rule video, this is a guide, if one is not available then flexibility must ensure and choose the next closest one. If issue that you are talking about here is not so much to do with the specific resolution profile but rather macOS and the display connection type. Different macOS version will vary these results.

2K vs 4K does not have more color or can show more gamut, that would depend on the display and panel, but if you are looking at the top of the line model then that is no so much of an issue. What you get with 4K is more resolution but if you are going to spend the extra money to run the display at scaled resolution all the time then I would recommend you go with a 2K, save money and less taxing on the video card / GPU.

Hi, I have a standard 1080p monitor. I wish to see 6 or 8 eight pages of the same Word doc on one monitor for editing purposes. I am strongly considering the BenQ PD2720U. Yes it will show multiple pages of the same document but if I have to scale the resolution in order to read them I wonder instead if I should just get the new BenQ PD3420Q ultra wide (2K?) monitor instead? I also wish to edit photos and videos in high resolution. I’d be extremely grateful for your thoughts on the best monitor for me. I think the PD3220U would be too big on my desk. So either an ultra wide or 27 inch seems suitable, and then I can always put another 27 inch next to it someday via daisy chaining. Thanks 🙂

@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 4 жыл бұрын
You have the right idea. It is similar to retina scaling, I say similar because these 4K are not technically 2x resolution like in Apple many devices, although it can be argue that their MBP 15 and 16 was never 2x resolution to start with and scaling is done via some complex mathematical computation. This said I would not use the term sharper to described it, I would say it looks smoother with less pixely edges before these pixel are densely packed together more so that a native 1080 panel, this is especially true in large 1080 panels such as 27" and up. I will say that the text have better definition when scaling. So to answer your questions, these 4K displays works well with scaling and it has an Apple retina like result.

i do not understand it is so confusing 🧐. I would like to understand one thing, for example if it is a default configuration it says 1920-1080 it means my 4k monitor becomes 1080P monitor and my photos shows on a screen not full resolution? it means i have to choose normal size texts and buttons and bar but low resolution photos for my editing and professional work or i have to to scale to see full potential resolution and very small eyes hurting buttons? is that what you’re saying? it means what is the point to pay crazy money for 4k monitor you you pushed to use default resolution and losing all the high resolution advantage of your screen, it means it will better to buy full hd screen en and that’s it. this means mac os system not optimized for having 4k monitor. if i understand correctly you have to have full 4k resolution and all your buttons and everything has to be very visible and big like a look of default option. Am i correct or no am i understanding right or no. help me please to understand all the logic about this. and what about PC ? I heard that this is a mac problem they don’t optimized for this but PC doesn’t have this problem you can have native 4k resolution and the same time your desktop interface buttons everything will be very normal visible size
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 2 жыл бұрын
It means that your display is binning pixel and is outputting the equivalent resolution of what you choose and because of pixel binning you are seeing smoother text. Your image scales in any apps anyway, so it does not effect much the way how your image is showing. Because of the individual program scaling you are not seeing more or less of your images you just get less screen real estate. In a sense if you scale 4K what you get is what some perceived as smoother text because of the binning, other sees it as blurry, every one perception is different. If you have 4K you have various scaling options. You are not locked in, so just choose what is the best balance for you. If you have PC this is totally different, each apps scales according to the OS setting although it is not without its issues. So in a sense you what you heard, the basic premise is correct, but the technical explanation is wrong. Mac Scales the entire os where as PC scales the interface of the app, again with it own sets of issues.

If you are using a 5k display, the default "virtual" resolution on macOS will be 1440p. This is as macOS turns on HiDPI mode by default which renders the GUI not 1:1 but 1:2. The reason is that the render process then has 4 pixels instead of one to make things looking smooth and sharp. Turning a 4k display on a Mac to "virtual" 1440p will cause macOS to do this: render a 5k frame with 1:2 (which it does even on the Studio display in default settings) and then scale it down to 4k. It is an internet myth (or urban legend) that this scaling down of a 5k to a 4k frame costs performance. It doesn't as it is all done by the GPU and GPUs are fast at this (I mean, really fast - there are 16 ms to render a new frame on a 60Hz display and this scaling down will happen within microseconds). Scale-Down-Artefacts may be there, but aren't noticeable in text, which I deem the most important part on screen. On macOS 1440p is the optimal size for most people on a 27 inch display, that's why Apple chose it as the default for its 27 inch 5k display. If you want more real estate (like having the full 4k resolution rendered 1:1) you need a bigger display. Then you may look at 32 inch displays or something. Note that macOS will never switch your monitor away from its native resolution and refresh rate (unlike Windows or Linux) - it will always scale. And 2k 27 inch displays suck on macOS. macOS doesn't have ClearType like Windows does, making text really pixelated. 4k is the minimal physical resolution you want on your Mac.

Hi Art, I’m confused by the endorsement of this comment. Has something changed in MacOS recently as old comments seem to recommend other options. I thought 27” 1440p gave the same text size as 27” 5k, both native, so not issues and both text and photos should look good, obviously we still don’t get as high of a resolution for photos on the 2K monitor. I’m also seeing a lot of comments that there are other issue like website compatibility and funky stuff happening with 4K on mac still. It’s crazy to have all this power nowadays and not have nice 5k options aside from a very few, that are old at this point….or extremely expensive….the new Samsung seems a disappointment. What to do? I can’t believe there’s not a better solution, but that seems to be the case. Crazy My eyes are getting old so I need the text larger and sharp, but want my photos at or close to retina quality and for everything to work properly. Is this not madness we still have this issue on these awesome machines? So archaic. This has been since the first 27” 5k iMac, how long ago now?

There’s the new Samsung too, but reviews aren’t great. Paying a premium for the LG considering how outdated it is in some ways seems a shame. I thought 27” 2K was a properly scaled native option and this says otherwise. Also, a shame to go 2K with all the advances. Really odd choices Apple has put us in. I’m left not knowing if the 4K options will do what I want….and even if they do there are reports here of some stuff not working right concerning the way some pages display and such.

Response was for part of the comment, not everything. 27" 2k runs native no scale, anything otherwise is wrong. 4K will work just fine, you would have to scale but it depends if you are ok with that look. 27" 2K text would be similar to 27" 5k default scale but because pixels are further apart, you'll see the pixel on the 2K version. @Torrey so yes if you have it scaled to 2k it would act like a 2K Retina display. The nice part about Mac is that you can dynamically change the scaling as needed. Well this is certainly a non-Apple-like implementation from Apple. I thought MacOS implemented a vectored-scaled UI a long time ago, and that the "Scaled" option in Display Preferences was simply a system-wide way to change the relative size of text and icons while the resolution remained FIXED. But seriously, Apple's solution is to just change the actual resolution output to the screen, resulting in a fuzzy/interpolated (GPU intensive) output?!!! There is literally no good solution - it's either native 4K where the OS text/icons are WAY too small, or the pixel-doubled 2K where it looks like a large-print edition for my grandmother. This is called “Native Resolution” or maximal resolution - that is, the clearest picture. Lower resolutions are displayed on a full screen through an interpolation circuit. The text can be a bit blurry but it is readable. So it is a balancing it. Personally, I'm never really bothered by the what some described as "blurred text." The way how I see it is that the text are smoother because of the scaling and it act similar to a Retina display despite not having 2x resolution to do a proper 2 times scaling. Try it out and let me know what you think. That warning in the manual is really for Windows only, where the OS can scale the interface and change the resolution at the same time. On a Mac you can't do that, at least not easily. Hope this helps.

How do you rate the scale resolution in terms of pixel sharpness and crisp lines on the 4K scale of the PD3220U and the native resolution of the PD3420Q? I can’t make my mind and I can’t find a visual comparison between these two factors. I really need to have sharp text and lines for graphic design work (I wear glasses) and just not sure if the extra ppi on the 4K will be blurred from the scalling factor or if the wqhd have enough pixel density to make it sharp on the native resolution. Can you please help? Do you have any side by side image of pixel density comparison. Which one looks sharper? Thank you in advance. Appreciate your reviews :)

I have a video along that line in the works. It is difficult to do and show for many reasons and I am still trying to come up with the best visual representation. What I would do if you are using those 2 displays is to set the PD3220U to 2K equivalent which will make it look and act like the PD3420Q. As far as sharpness goes that is a personal preference, some prefer scale, others thinks they are blurry. It is a matter of perception. Have you used a scaled 4K before?

I'm thinking of buying a 32" 4k BenQ to run with the Apple Studio but from I understand, OS cant run 4k without scaling and to scale uses disproportionate GPU and slows the system down (as it scales to 5k then scales it down to 4k). IE non retina is approx 110 ppi and retina is 220 ppi but 4k is close to 140ppi. The Apple Studio monitor also doesn't run 4k for this reason and instead runs 5k which is closer to 220 ppi so doesn't require the process of rescaling?
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 2 жыл бұрын
Ok, misconceptions there from those who things they know something and just perpetuate that misconception. MacOS can run any resolution native, the question is do you want to. 4K native on 27" or 32" even makes text really small. And 4K is never really meant for majority normal human consumption, so this is what macOS came up with scaling. Mac does this by scaling the entire OS where as windows scales the apps, a variation on a theme, each with it own sets of pros and cons. A user may prefer one more than another but it does not necessary mean overall better, just better for the individual. This series of 4 videos goes into depth to answer the why, start with this one kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZ68aWylp8ytq7M and No 5K does not get scale down to 4k, again misconception and can't be further from the truth. Yes pixel density is one thing and to be consider retina it needs to be at great than 200 PPI. And yes that is the reason why apple choose 5k but that does not means MacOS can't do 4K native. And yes scaling might not look as good on non 5K but that is why this video exist and other series on my channel. Also if you look at apple 5K display, it does not run at 5K native, it scales by default. And no it still does requirer processing for scaling. Watch this as well. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqKriqaAebh-ja8

yes and no, if that is all you need sure, but if you dynamically scale the interface based on tasks then getting a 1080 is not the best idea. Nice video. However it only addresses UI size, which I understand. However what I'm interested in is actual resolution when viewing my photos in Lightroom. It feels like the various size options only affect the UI in a meaningful way, but when viewing my photos in lightroom classic at 100% pixel size, only massive resolution (with more screen estate but tiny fonts) makes sense... In smaller modes, it looks like LR dynamically scales photo viewing to "act as" 4k, but the way the photos is framed makes no sense whatsoever... Any run into this?

@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 4 жыл бұрын
If you are going to get 4K for scaling then I would go with 2K easier on the graphic card. And even though the pixel are further apart and less dense on a 2K you are not really setting, 6 - 12 inches from it anyways so you are ok. For my 32" displays 4K I am sitting about 3 feet form the display and at that point your eyes can't really resolved those small pixels. So you can certainly do what you suggest, however, it would be somewhat difficult to find a high quality 32" 2K resolution panel in the world of 4k. And with regards to the sweet spot, it is relative for each person and workflow, it is one that is difficult to pin point. Again it all comes down to workflow and what you do with the display. The PD3420Q would be the only alternative, but no dealer has it here at the moment. So for now I stay with my defective LG 34UM95

Does it mean if i always use a lower resolution than native i throw money from the window if buying high-resolution display?
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 4 жыл бұрын
not necessary. If you dynamically change the resolution based on the application use then no. I do this all of the time depending no what I am working on. I found that 2K resolution equivalent is good for image editing but for my daily use I scale the display to 3360 x 1890 which is found works great for me.

@@ArtIsRight Honestly speaking i have never changed resolution. Some displays look good only at native resolution. Will try this workflow on new Apple panel.

Yes anything 2K below yes. Otherwise if you are on a Mac, laptop with Retina Display or anything with 4 - 5 or 6 K from apple the default is never native, it is some form of scaling. And on higher resolution display 4K or above running native will hurt your eyes, not to mentioned it is unusable for any practical purposes.

Im trying to get a decent resolution for my LG 27"4k display. It's either "looks like 1080" where everything is huge, or "looks like 1440p" where everything is super tiny and blurry.
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 3 жыл бұрын
if you have a 4K then 2160 will be tiny, blurry at 1440 is part of pixel binning, some are ok with it some are not. There's not much that can be done about this. Only 5K displays and higher will provide you true HD-DPI or Retina on scaling but those resolutions also come with their own set of issues.

@@ArtIsRight I use the same monitor with a Windows PC running at native 4k but with 150% scaling and it looks great. I guess it's 1080p with Mac, no other choice. thanks!

That is because Win 10 Scale the UI and not the OS. MacOS scales the entire OS independent of UI. Different implementation, some prefer one over another, but are not without their issues but change is not on the horizon either and as get higher and higher resolution display this is going to a persistence issue going forward for some.

Is there a way to scale to 4k for space but keep the menus and text large as if default is selected (even via 3rd party apps)? I know on windows you can do that super easy by selecting zoomed scaling to 150% and resolution at 4k.

For Mac no, it scales the entire OS. On windows there are downside as well, so it is no necessary a winning solution.

@@ArtIsRight I have a macbook pro 13, 2017 and a PD2700U and the problem is on any scaled resolution is what it says in the display setting when you scale: "Using scaled may affect performance". And it does. Quite enough to be annoying especially on an Intel graphics card. Do you have any suggestions on how to use a scaled resolution and not affect performance? Note that using the biggest or largest resolution doesn't affect performance. Only scaled does.
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 4 жыл бұрын
@lulian Tudora, 4K scaling is taxing on many video card especially on 13” MacBook Pro because it does not have a dedicated graphic card. With scaling your graphics card is rendering double the resolution and then scaling it down in half. As far as speeding up none scale performance there’s nothing much that can be done beside getting an eGPU which may or may not help. EGPU for general computing is a mixed bag.
