the way the Ark in this movie works is inside the Ark is the dust of the Ten commandments from when Moses smashed the tablet and it also holds God's Judgement Commandment Death Army that has the ability to look into one's soul and see if the person/persons have broken any of the 10 unforgivable sins decreed by God...and it's been said that the window to a person's soul is through their eyes so as long as their eyes are closed, they are free from Judgement from God's Commandment Death Army

When George Lucas made Star Wars everyone was so convinced it would be a flop, even Lucas himself. So instead of going to the Star Wars premier he instead flew to Hawaii with his friend Steven Spielberg to chill out. While they were there they came up with the story for Indiana Jones.
@willbeonekenobi

Actually George Lucas had the idea for Indiana Jones before he made Star Wars. He and another filmmaker Phillip Kaufman (1978's Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 1983's The Right Stuff) who was Lucas' first choice to direct the film but then Kaufman left after two weeks of working on the film, then George did Star Wars and while waiting for the grosses to start coming in for Star Wars (and wanting to get away from the opening) he joined up with Steven Spielberg in Hawaii and Lucas asked Spielberg what his next project is and Spielberg said that he had been trying to get the attention of the James Bond producers for a long time because he wanted to do a James bond film, then George pitched Raiders of The Lost Ark to him. Steve agreed on the spot on the condition of the main characters name is changed as the name was originally going to be Indiana Smith. Lucas then suggested 'Okay what about "indiana Jones"?' Then steve was like 'Okay I'm in.'

It is not made clear in the movie (I heard there was a deleted scene), but apparently... 1 Samuel 6:19: And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the Lord, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men... So I guess we are to assume that Indy, being well-studied on the subject, would know of this passage and know not to look at the Ark when it is opened

Particularly in regards to Indiana's characterization - which is a lot more callous and he is - frankly - somewhat of an ASS. Also - if you had problems with the snakes? You may want to keep a sick bag next to the chair for... a certain other type of creepy crawlie infestation. I personally cannot handle that scene, myself. I can handle a lot of things. But I can't handle THAT. EEEAUUURGH... Blech! In fact, parts of Temple of Doom verge into outright HORROR. Fun fact: The Mythbusters did multiple Indiana Jones specials, and tested that running through the darts hall scene. They matched the time of stepping on the pad to releasing the dart. It worked, you could make it if you ran even at a good paced run
@logandarklighter
@logandarklighter 2 жыл бұрын
I saw that episode - a favorite. But I had a further idea - and it comes in two parts: ONE - The darts activate rather slowly in the film. There's like a full one-second delay between the pad depress and the dart shooting out. So I thought - maybe what has happened here is that the temple is OLD. And it has barely had any visitors. The pad/dart combo has to be a complex mechanism. Maybe the inner workings of it are corroded or grown into with tree roots. That would explain the slow activation time. Originally they acted MUCH faster. TWO - What if the darts were timed such that they were meant to kill anyone APPROACHING the idol. But that same timing would work AGAINST them hitting anyone going the other way? A combination of both factors could be what saved Indy!

Here’s something for symbolism and perspective in the last scene of the movie. The Ark was buried under the desert in a temple for thousands of years. You could not find it without a map. The movie ended with a non-described box, in a giant warehouse, down a unknown row or column and placed in a spot that could only be found by a map. It is once again lost in a desert of boxes.

Easter eggs were definitely a thing even at the time "Raiders of the Lost Ark" was made. In fact, there's a famous one when Indy and Sallah first discover the Ark and are lifting the big stone lid off of its resting place. As they're lifting it out, you'll notice that there are small columns surrounding them, covered in hieroglyphs. On the column to Indy's right, one of the hieroglyphs looks like R2-D2 and C-3PO. Similarly, when Indy is running from the Hovitos at the beginning of the movie and yelling at Jock to start the plane, you can see that the registration number on Jock's plane is OB-CPO, a slightly obscured shout-out to Obi-wan Kenobi and C-3PO. There are some others Star Wars easter eggs in the Indiana Jones sequels as well but, since I don't think you've reacted to them yet, I won't spoil them here. Let's just say that there are enough Star Wars easter eggs in the Indiana Jones movies that there's actually a fan theory that all of Indiana Jones's adventures are just dreams that Han Solo is having while frozen in carbonite. The Indiana Jones movies also have some shout-outs to James Bond. And the num-chuk/coat hangar scene with the Nazi in Marion's bar is actually a callback to a gag Spielberg did in one of his earlier movies ("1941"). Oh! And several of the characters throughout the Indiana Jones movies are named after the filmmakers' pets, including George Lucas's dog, Steven Spielberg's dog, and the dog of screenwriters Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz. Fun side note to that one: George Lucas's dog was also the inspiration for Chewbacca in Star Wars. And, finally, this isn't really an easter egg but is maybe a fun fact depending on what kind of TV you watched growing up: Indy's rival archaeologist in this movie, Belloq, is played by Paul Freeman who went on to play the villain, Ivan Ooze, in the Power Rangers.

Indy 3 or Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade is probably my favorite of the franchise, and then the next sequel after that is probably the worst movie of the franchise, LOL! It is not that part 4 is so horrible and it does have its moments, but it feels so out of place and Indy just looks and feels so different too as a character. Did you know there were also the young Indiana Jones chronicles show? Disney & Lucasfilm did announce an Indiana Jones 5 movie I cannot wait to see. Hey loved your reaction especially as it was a lengthy one. Few points to say firstly to the scene with Ford when he shot that guy yeah that was all his idea & good to keep it in. In the cinema the whole place erupted with laughter. With the snakes many of the snakes used were harmless tree snakes however the king cobra was real however there was a thin piece of glass barely visible between Ford & the snake. Such a great moment. The stunt with the truck with a stuntman going underneath was probably one of the most daring & incredible stunts ever caught on film. Finally I am still bewildered to how that final scene was done with the ark. If CGI was around back then that is easily explained however we are talking about 1981 & to perfect a scene like that is something quite special. Practical & special effects will always be preferred by me than what is used today in film. Thanks

Two young KZbinrs are about to travel with Dr. Henry Jones, Jr. What will they make of this "old, long, noisy, last century" movie? I've read that Spielberg and Lucas were thinking about what to do next. Spielberg wanted to "do a James Bond" movie, but Lucas brought up the cliffhanger serials of the 1930's and 1940's. With their second choice leading man signed, they headed off for adventure. Harrison Ford got an academic upgrade to "Dr. Henry Jones, Jr." and another iconic role in a movie franchise. With enough action for THREE Action Adventure movies, "Raiders" stormed the box office in 1981. Two-fisted Marion Ravenwood was an equal to Indy, unlike the "wilting urban girl" of...Oops, a spoiler! 39:39 This scene made the theater audience sigh and laugh. Are the real life adventures of this adventurer an inspiration for "Indiana Jones"?: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Chapman_Andrews

To me, it's still just "Raiders of the Lost Ark". This was Alfred Molina's first credited movie roll. The call letters on the seaplane at the beginning of the movie was OB-CPO and images of C-3PO and R2-D2 can be seen among the hieroglyphs on one of the walls of The Well of the Souls. The line "It's not the years, honey, it's the milage" was ad-libbed by Ford. Spielberg and Melissa Matheson, Harrison Ford's wife, wrote the script to E.T. during breaks in the filming.

The cherubim are to face each other, looking toward the cover. 21 Place the cover on top of the ark and put in the ark the tablets of the covenant law that I will give you. 22 There, above the cover between the two cherubim that are over the ark of the covenant law, I will meet with you and give you all my commands for the Israelites." The Lost Ark refers to the Ark of the Covenant, which was built by the Children of Israel on their 40 year journey from slavery in Egypt to freedom in the land of Canaan. It's in the book of Exodus in the Old Testament of the Bible. It was revered as the most Holy of the Holy relics of the Children of Israel, or Jewish people as they are more commonly known today. Inside the Ark, were placed the 2 Tablets carrying the 10 Commandments, a golden bowl of Manna, bread from heaven that fed the Israelites for the 40 yrs they wandered, and the Staff of Aaron, brother to Moses, which was what God used to show miracles to Pharaoh, which eventually made Pharaoh willing to allow them to leave their life as slaves in his service. Once the Ark was built these items were placed inside for reverence and safe keeping. NO ONE was allowed to open the Ark...EVER. NO ONE was allowed to TOUCH the Ark..EVER. (if you recall, Indy and Sallah didn't actually touch it either, they used wooden poles as was required in the Bible in order to move it.) Only the High Priest of the Israelites was allowed to even be in the same room as the Ark which was kept in the "Holy of Holies," the most sacred and Holy portion of the Temple, and THAT was only 1 day out of the year on Yom Kippur. Anyone not abiding by these rules, no matter the reason, was slain by the Ark. Remember now, the Jews wandered for 40 yrs so their Temple was not a stone structure during that time. It was a moveable tabernacle in the form of an elaborate, but mobile tent. Once, while being transported, the Ark shifted and almost fell off the cart carrying it. A man named Uzzah ran up to keep the most Holy relic from falling to the ground and being damaged or opened, or all-together broken. He was struck down for failing to heed God's word, that NONE shall lay hands on the Ark itself. Fast forward a few thousand years, the Nazis persecute the Jewish people, which is why that Nazi Colonel was uncomfortable with Baloch's Jewish ceremony. Balach thought dressing as a high priest and reciting some Hebrew text would enable him to open and access the Ark and its contents...so Hitler..."Mr. Wonderful" could gain access to its power. but the real POWER wasn't manifested by the Acacia Wood Box with Golden Angels on it..it was, rather, the Power of the Lord channeled into the Ark. Spielberg, being so deeply connected to the Holocaust of WW II, and founder of the SHOAH Foundation, doesn't pull any punches in his depiction of Nazis...or what sometimes happened to them...nor should he...what they did was despicable. Another film to Check out from Spielberg about WW II and the plight of the Jewish people is Schindler's List. It is stars Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, and Sir Ben Kingsly. It's life changing!! Couple other fun trivia pieces John Rhys Davies is the actor that plays Sallah...He plays the dwarf Gimli in the Lord of the Rings movies when you guys get to them and also does the voice for a character named Treebeard. At the beginning and end of Raiders, there is a heavier guy in a suit talking about Ark in the beginning...and "top men" at the end. He plays "Porkins" the bearded heavy-set X Wing pilot at the end of Star Wars, Ep IV. as they make their attack run on the Death Star. Love your guys' reaction...can't wait to keep watching more and more of your reactions! Take care, God bless, and enjoy the movies!

In regards to the bit with him riding the submarine - yes. Yes he did. All the way to that submarine pen at that island. What makes it believable is that U-boats - both German AND Japanese and American - did NOT travel long distances submerged during the first two World Wars. They COULDN'T. They didn't have unlimited nuclear power plants to allow them to do so. They ran on a combination of Diesel Engines and battery banks. The Diesel Engines could propel the subs at a good clip on the surface (which is also why they were more "boat shaped" in their hulls rather than "tube shaped" like modern subs). But they were of course air-breathing engines. You can't run them when you're submerged. Subs switched to battery power for running underwater. And they were MUCH slower when doing so. And they didn't have the endurance to go long distances. So one would assume that the German U-Boat never actually submerged during the trip between the freighter and the Sub base under the island. No need to. Thus Indiana was - relatively speaking - safe. Though assuredly NOT COMFORTABLE. And it must have only taken a day or two travel time. Any longer and he'd have started getting severely dehydrated. Now if you were trying to write this for a character trying the same trick on a modern sub - I'd have to call BS. But in this specific historical context - it works. Barely. But it works.

One thing I find quite funny about this movie is that Indy had next to zero relevance on the outcome of the story. Without Indy's intervention the Nazis would've still found the Ark, taken it to the island, done the ritual, and died. I suppose Indy's only influence on the story of the movie would be that the US military was able to retrieve the Ark afterwards, presumably he gave up the location after he and Marion found their way back to America.

Slight correction: during ww2, Himmler was the true nut job on the Occult, Hitler barely had any interest in such obsession. Granted, he allowed Himmler near unlimited funding to try and find various religious artifacts. The Holy Grail, The Ark, many others. Himmler believed with these objects in possession, they could be harnessed to ensure not just victory, but ETERNAL rule over the earth. Hitler was more a dark fan of art from around the globe.
