I couldn't agree more David. I was planning on buying a ring or twin flash set-up for my D7200, but now I will try a second hand Nikon flash, (SB600) and cheap diffuser.

Great vid John. Thanks. As is most often the case I will heed your recommendation. Love the partial view of the Landy! Hope to be in it again soon.

I wish I had seen this years ago before I dumped a ton of cash into the Nikon CLS ring rig, LOL. It was a lot of fun to tinker with, but I wasn't huge into Macro back then and I offloaded it on eBay. I think you're dead right about the inflatables --where I've always thought them to be too gimmicky and small for ad-hoc portrait work, there's no arguing with the relative size on macro subjects.

Very good John. However, how on earth do you manage to get an aperture setting of f51?!
@johngravett91944 жыл бұрын
As you focus a lens closer, the actual effective aperture reduces due to lens breathing. On the Nikkor 105mm at infinity, the apertures go from f2.8 to f32, at 1:1 it becomes f5 to f57, though that isn't shown on the aperture ring - only in the viewfinder readout.

Super video John and I have been trying it out today. However I am really struggling to get enough light on the subject. Using my Canon 6D/105mm macro and a Canon dedicated Speedlight with a large strap on reflector (similar to yours). However, even with ISO at 400 and an aperture of f16 it is only just about acceptable (see blip today)..how do you get so much light at f29?

I set the flash to +0.7 stops, you could try that - and your photo of the hoverfly looks pretty good apart from the dark background., caused by the background being slightly too far from the subject. You could set exposure compensation on the flash to give a brighter result - most work up to + 2 stops. Hope this helps.
