French President Emmanuel Macron and his Brazilian counterpart Lula da Silva unveiled a $1.1 billion plan to protect the Amazon rainforest. Both leaders took a boat ride down the Amazon river before making the announcement on an island in the jungles. Macron also conferred France's highest civilian honour to an indigenous leader in the Amazon. The French president is looking at Brazil as a possible bridge to build influence in the global south. France is among the biggest investors and job-providers in the country, but the political ties failed to take off under Lula's predecessor Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro had mocked Macron's wife in 2019, leading to a war of words between the two leaders. Can Macron make headway with this latest trip? Palki Sharma tells you.
