Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, there has been a notable evolution in France’s approach toward Moscow. In the initial months following the invasion, French President Emmanuel Macron continued to engage diplomatically with Vladimir Putin, controversially insisting that the West must not humiliate Moscow, prompting harsh criticism from France’s NATO allies. After apologizing last year for France’s previous failure to listen to the warning of its Central and Eastern European allies about Russian intentions, however, the French President notably pushed last month for greater Western strategic ambiguity regarding the war, stating that he had not ruled out the possibility of sending French troops to Ukraine. This once again prompted an outcry from NATO allies wary of escalation, such as Germany and the United States. To discuss how to interpret this apparent shift in French thinking and its possible implications going forward, Tara Varma and Bruno Tertrais join Andrea Kendall-Taylor and Jim Townsend on Brussels Sprouts.

France is probably the only country in europe that never took US support for granted going back to the suez crisis. Its kind of business as usual for them in that sense compared to the shock it is for others.

The question is not whether we want to go to war or not, but what France's interests are. If you're not prepared to defend your interests, then you can't be independent and you'll have to follow another power, as the EU is doing with the USA at the moment.

The introduction of the Russian military act is wrongly named. The USA has not honored the agreement terms twice. That is why the Russia took reaction military act to achieve the goal. When Russian took East Ukraine, it implied the eastward movement of the NATO was a failure. If NATO continued to support the war, consequences of both sides should be estimated.

Why France can spread it's influence far beyond France,England far beyond England,Amerika far beyond Amerika.. but Russia can't ? Why it is not allowed for all different types to have a chance of spreading their influence? I don't say this against France and for Russia. I don't favour anyone particulary because people are similar everywhere. Things have layers and people everywhere are booth good or bad. One dimesional thinking and generalisation that one nation is exeptional and good and other is not was many times proven wrong. Personally I think that each individual person should be respected on the basic of his-her human qualities and differences apreciated.

Macron knew well of Putin's untrustworthiness long ago, this was even more undeniably the case upon Russia's invasion. What has taken longer to process is how unreliable the Americans have become in regards to aiding European security. Macron understands now that America is burdened with sclerotic leadership, as is Russia, and the sclerotic do not lead well. Relatively younger, pro European, he has more in common with Zelensky than the Americans, this generational and geographical commonality means that Macron has better insight into Ukrainiane's plight and is more attuned to its leadership. The only issue is that France has been burdened by Le Pen and the fringe she represents, but as Paris will be center stage in the summer, it will be an ideal time for Macron to dictate the narrative.

This is the normal way that Empires implode..After being kicked out of Africa, France still trying to show some power. Basically the same happened to the UK. After their Suez Crisis tried to punch above its weight by fighting in US lead wars.

So, you've been ruzzified. It does not matter what Russia is capable of. Russia must be stopped and isolated now. Later on the price will be much, much higher.
