Welcome and welcome back! So glad to be talking about Macross finally, been kind of gearing up for this for a couple months now since i really got into the series during our break in January. Some people are going to be annoyed that we didn't go into spoiler territory, but that's okay, we WILL do another video on Macross, probably this year. I worked with Axel Beats on this one, he edited the first half of the video and I did the latter half and the scoring (i always do the score) but he says he enjoyed getting into Macross, so we already have an editor set up for this franchise, making it easy to do another video in a timely manner! I think i've said everything that needed to be said other than that in the video, so i suppose that's it for me today. looking forward to people's comments, and of course the typical backlash from fragile men. A video launch day is always a good day! TTYS, TYSM, -Mike

Not only is this an excellent retrospective about the Macross series, but it also highlights the point of Macross. That we should strive for peace and understanding as well as be willing to fight for it; and that those two ideals are not mutually exclusive. It shows strength of character is developed over time based on the choices we make and whether we push those choices. Heroes aren't born, they're made, and many heroes were born of Macross, just as many are being born today.

I was introduced to Macross, like many other children of the 80's, through Robotech. My father was as much of a fan as I was and hunted for a copy of Macross: Do You Remember Love. That was no easy feat to accomplish in the 80's and led both my father and I to encounter a group of anime fans who traded bootleg VHS tapes of anime from Japan back and forth to each other. I was exposed to many great classic anime at this time like Bubblegum Crisis, Dirty Pair, Vampire Hunter D, and many more. Thanks to Macross I had the opportunity to experience many anime classics long before the home video market in the west became a thing.

It is emotion, empathy, seeing the joys, sorrows, rage, and dreams of your fellow passengers to the grave as your own, that will truly bring an end to strife. 'Culture' and the sharing and understanding of our cultures as the window to our collective humanity is the only weapon that can slay the beast of hatred, for once and for all time."

How they showed conflict and how it is resolved is very different from other mech anime and was one of the first to do it. Possibly, but the first run of Dragon Ball was brought over by Harmony Gold, the creators of Robotech. It's very possible that without their initial attempt and other companies realising that Z would be more successful in English speaking nations, Dragon Ball may have never landed quite as hard.

@@mookiestewart3776 I definitely agree Macross has its place in American animation history, but Harmony Gold was not the first one to import Japanese animation to stateside and it would not be the last. Macross 7 is one of my favorite chapters, but it is a lot of a lot and pretty heavily padded. I find it helps if you don't imagine Basara as a character but rather an aspect of the plot and setting that everyone else reacts to and grows around. The important thing about 7 is that it marks the point where the series went from a military mech show featuring music, to a military mech anime ABOUT music. All future installments are as much about the music as anything else. Also Fukayama Yoshiki's music is freaking baller. If nothing else, the soundtrack is worthy of anyone's time

I rarely comment, but I still wanted to say that the work you do here is fantastic. art, regardless of medium, always reflects both its present and the present we live in. to lift it, talk about it and spread it is so worthwhile in these times. we must find strength to be able to live in the present through the media we consume, not hide in it and forget reality. someone must always be the one who starts. to take a stand, it can be me, you or anyone who has the courage to do so. it may sound hollow but I genuinely think so!

One of the greatest Space Opera anime of all time! Shoji Kawamori is my favorite mechanical designer that I've studied most of my life, and I even have one of his artbooks dedicated to his work on the Valkyries (published before Macross F happened). On the whole "Robotech Vs Macross" debate, I say "Yak Deculture!" because I loved them both. Robotech's Macross Saga had a great dub cast and stayed close to the original script in some ways until they tried to make Protoculture into a tangible *substance* and not a precursor race it's supposed to be. Macross has the best songs because Mari Iijima is better than Reba West! Lastly, "Do You Remember Love" is the greatest anime film in history.

I'm Chilean. I was born in a dictatorship because the US didn't like that we voted for a socialist government. I grew up watching "Robotech" in the days of an incipient, fragile democracy after 17 years of authoritarian horror. So as an adult I got into other Macross series. I was watching the SDF Macross sequel movie, "Macross, do you remember love", when I saw something strange. It was a billboard of the feature film in the Macross City Cinema: "Il pleut sur Santiago". Santiago is my hometown's name. It translates to "It rains over Santiago". After some googling, I found out: It is a French documentary on the horrors of the military coup in my country. Sometime in the early 80s, somone in the other side of the world was thinking of the horrors my people were suffering. About the loss of democracy and the dream of equality. Shōji Kawamori, the man that made my first anime, thought of my opressed country when making the ending of the series I grew up with. It was half a second, but it felt so personal. I loved SDF Macross before. The plot is nuanced, the romance subplot is good, the combat animation is good (except that knife fight), and the finale? Oh boy. They blew all the animation budget on that one. Anyway, now I love Macross even more. Anyway, yeah, all art is political, and I appreciate that Bonsai Pop recognizes that reality.

I would also recommend to anyone who watches this to watch Macross: Do you remember love? It’s essentially a re-telling of the middle part of SDF Macross but with all-new animation and a streamlined story. The animation in it is god tier and the same core elements of Macross are there as well. Thanks for talking about the War in Ukraine as well. I there's a lot of feelings I'm dealing with around that. It reminds me of stories my grandparents told me and not in a good way. They were kids in Nazi Germany during the war, and even in the rural northern parts of the country. They lived closer to Copenhagen in Denmark than Berlin and spoke a dialect most Germans still see as "inarticulate hillbilly speech" which the Nazis refused to teach in school instead using high German. They witnessed a neighbour be sent to a concentration camp for being a "communist." He thankfully survived and returned after the war was over. They had a cousin with a learning disability be taken away by Nazi medical officials and never seen again, likely killed in the T4 Program, a part of the Holocaust targeting neurodivergent people. I'm autistic, so if I lived in their time, it's likely that I would've been killed in the same way. So, seeing state repression and military aggression at the hands of Putin's regime makes me deeply sad. To see Russians and Ukrainians, who both suffered under the Nazis, forced to fight due to the whims of Tyrannical Russian Autocrats is heartbreaking. To watch Putin call the Ukrainian government Nazis enraged me. Saying Neo-Nazis run Ukraine is so bullshit it's insulting. In Zelensky's time in office many far-right officials have been expelled from positions of authority. Every day this baseless war goes on is one more day too long.

Love the analysis, man. This is exactly why I still love that show, it’s sci-if but the way it handles the war and the aftermath is real shit. There would definitely be a unification war if humanity found a spaceship like in the show and while the show keeps it brief Macross Zero goes into it way deeper, plus the VF-0 might be the one fighter that looks cooler than the VF-1. Also I love that after Space War 1 things aren’t just perfect all of a sudden, Zentradi that rebelled against their superiors now not being able to handle freedom and a life where they don’t constantly wage war and rather just wander off int or the wastelands to die alone. The show is as old as I am but it’s very good at handling a lot of very serious themes, the soundtrack is absolutely amazing and it has tons of great characters. On thing that needs to be said is that Misa is the better girl but best girl is either Claudia or Milia, Misa good but still not good enough. I also couldn’t get into M7 mostly because I didn’t like the music as much and absolutely hate Basara and wanted him to crash and burn, I also hate the new aliens. The besting about the show was Milia still being a bad ass babe. The Macross: Do You Remember, Love? Movie is on KZbin in HD and anyone that likes Macross and knows the basics of how the show starts should watch it it’s amazing. Also Robotech might have been my introduction to Macross but it can get fucked, since it totally fucks the original shows anti-war message by having Minmay sing garbage songs about how humanity will crush it’s enemies not love and anti-war songs.

Yeah, IM sure you've heard it all, buuuut... 1. Its pronounced "Mack-Cross"... the way you're saying it hurts my ears and brain. 2. Zentraedi were made to be the proxy worriors of the Protoculture Stellar Republic, after they decided that they didnt wanna die in wars... so they made the male Zentran, and the female Meltran (add -di for suffix when referring to them as a race)...and brainwashed them to never attack their creators. ...well, that basically went as swimmingly as you can expect, until their first directive "Win the War" began overriding their latter directive "Dont attack Protoculture"...and they wiped out their creators...mostly...its alittle fuzzy (especially once you get into Macross II: Lovers Again, because the Mardook MIGHT be the last, lost remnent of the Protoculture, as they seem to do EVERYTHING the Protoculture supposedly did). 3. Its called a "Daedalus Attack", and it is awesome... just wait for when the New Macross Battle Sections do their "Double Daedalus Attack"... oh, and im not sure if you bring it up, you haven't yet...but that big-@55 missile swarm attack vehicles frequently called is referred too as an "Itano Circus"...after the animator who created it. Its weird... 4. Hey, Guy-who-doesn't-have-all-the-answers, can you answer me this... Why do you feel the need to address people who are just "not that deep, bro", instead of addressing and talking more about the SDF Macross franchise? You'll never reach those people who don't want deeper messages in their anime; those are the people who see MS Gundam and see kool war robots... not the tregedy of war, and the consequences. So just dont address them, those people are gonna comment regardless...so, stay on track, and talk about the show, its themes, and whatever messages you got out of that. And remember those Immortal Words of the great "Red Leader"... "Stay on target!" 5. btw, there's 4 minutes left of this at the time of writing this...are you gonna bring up all the easter eggs? like the USS Enterprise? Millenium Falcon? Space Pirate Battleship Arcadia? Nostromo? the naked Mesa? I can go on...there's some really funny ones...

I was 4 when the dub came out in the US, and by some miracle the video store in my tiny Midwestern town had the entire series. I was genuinely shocked by how much stuck with me, and how well it aged, when I finally re-watched it 20 years later.

Just subscribed, because a> I really appreciate creators discussing older series, not just the 'new hotness'. & b> I don't watch anime for escapism, and I sure as hell don't watch anime analysis for it either. Thank you for keeping it real & I hope you can continue to do so!

My first introduction to anime as a kid in the early 80s was Mach a Go Go(Speed Racer) and Macross(Robotech). Awesome race cars, and jets that change to bada$$ robots. Epic.

I need to watch actual Macross. I’ve only seen Robotech. And i love mech shows. Fake fan i know. I just recently watched og UC Mobile Suit Gundam show and was surprised at how good it actually was. And on the Joey issue you have. I don’t think it’s wrong for people to continue living their lives and not always focusing on the bad in the world. I also think it’s good to also look at it. But don’t think he’s a bad person because of it like you seem to think of him. It can be nice to watch someone just have dumb fun on KZbin and escape while watching them.

I bought the SDF Macross DVDs. As someone who likes subs about 95% of the time over an English dub I was surprised how much I actually liked Robotech more. The english cast did really well and I thought it was edited (a few scenes were moved say 1-2 ep down the road) better as well.

He just doesn’t like the content that he’s making, and finds it pretty gross, and I kinda understand. Although Joey does talk more politically on his side channel, and it’s not the huge topics in the world, but smaller more Japanese related topics.

Dude, you did an AMAZING JOB! And, speaking as someone who was there when Super Dimensional Fortress Macross first came out & later that heresy that is called "Robotech", I'm so GLAD to see ANOTHER convert to the Macross anime series! What I disagree with is you calling Shoji Kawamori as "Kawamori-san" when the proper way to call him is "Kawamori-sensei"! Other than that, I'm EXTREMELY HAPPY to see that YOU, like me, LOVE great plots FIRST & then later great art! GOOD JOB! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

I absolutely love your content and youve turned me on to so many great shows... and in this one you do make some good points 100%... and I do agree with the anime escapism argument to an extent but here's my main issue.... why are you in this video and so many other people trying to downplay communism? like I get it that capitalism isn't great but when I see people downplay communism like that when you say "Russia wasn't actually communist" its really disheartening.... my whole family grew up under communist rule and its not a good thing its literally dictatorship where everyone is in poverty. Whenever I see people from the west say stuff like "we need communism" without ever actually experiencing it is extremely misguided. communism is just as bad as capitalism if not worse... so why do so many people here have this notion that its what we need without actually knowing the terrible implications of it.... not trying to start any fights I'm just trying to understand peoples thinking.... whenever I see people talk so positively about the oppression my family went through its genuinely angering and disheartening

Thank you for saying this. The people who want communism in the states are people who never lived through it, and are arrogant in thinking that the US will somehow do it better than any prior nation.

My boyfriend’s family also lived in the USSR. They don’t know why anybody here would want to live through it.

The reason I said “it wasn’t really communism” is because of the dictatorship. Communism is the opposite of anarchy and both are defined by a complete lack of leadership, the idea is that everyone governs themselves. Depending on your tastes (survival of the fittest vs. sharing everything completely) both political philosophies are considered utopias by their supporters. I don’t support either idea, specifically because both inevitably lead to a horrible dictatorship. Western communists are blind idealists and western anarchists are blind selfish babies with WAY too much undeserved confidence. I think what it comes down to is that capitalism is a game,: “make the most money,” but there’s only so much money to win. At a certain point, capitalism needs a hard reset or you end up with a very small amount of people holding all the money and everyone else is fucked. We’re basically there right now. some people think going straight communism is the answer, that’s why you hear people saying it. Unfortunately they have no foresight and zero concept of basic human nature or social structures. It’s a vocal far left minority that is magnified by the internet’s love for extremism.

@@Bonsaipop 100% Bpop! Lots of Buddhist potential talking points on human nature and corruptibility regardless of the system we live in. At the end of the day if things are out of balance shit gets weird. Systems that drive people towards scarcity will end in more suffering. Working towards systems where people have better democratic channels to take care of themselves and not exploit other people is the way to go. Much love to you, you rock for reading people's comments, and thanks for making me think.

I grew up on Robotech in the 80's until anime started trickling into the U.S. store in the 90's(Tower Records/ The Warehouse/ Hollywood Videos to name a few) and I was finally introduced to SDF: Macross. At that point I was really hooked in this awesome world. Started watching everything I could get my hands on: Do You Remember Love?, Macross 2, Plus, Zero and finally F. Just like you I couldn't get myself to like 7. The only thing I could probably say I liked from that series was seeing legends characters Max and his Ex-Wife. I also felt this same way with Delta. Idk, Frontier raised the bar with me then it felt like we're back with 7 again. Anyways, great video. Thank you for sharing and brining me back.

One of the great things about SDFM is how it goes out of its way to narratively justify many of the tropes and conventions that similar shows (Yamato, Gundam, etc.) had used at the time. It was something I missed when watching it all those years ago that I only realized upon watching more shows from that era.

My father introduced me to Macross (Robotech) which drew me into anime and Japanese video games. As a kid I just liked it because of the robots fighting but I rewatched a few years back and the story had much more meaning to me. It’s a show that isn’t focused on the mech fights but more on the human element whether that be about how society is structured or to how relationships and our personal lives matter. I’m confident enough to say that it is a wonderful series that in my opinion is more meaningful than many other mecha anime I have seen. Plus the music is a central theme of the show and who doesn’t love good music.
