My personal favorite is the YF-19 (Macross Plus). I have a personal preference for uniquely designed things. Its forward swept wings gave off the Sukhoi's Berkut vibe, my favorite REAL world fighter jet.

Yeah, the idea did come from part of Tenjin Hidetaka's realistic looking Macross artwork and Macross Master File's variable fighter documentary. This is done with real models with real backgrounds.

go get Ace Combat 6, there's a plane there called CFA-44 that have a special weapon that can lock on to 12 targets at once, basically a YF-30 that can't transform to GERWALK and Battroid mode

I assume you meant that because these are fictional and can never be used, but will still beat the shit out of the F-35 right? However, technically speaking if these were "moved" to real life, they would beat the shit out of pretty much everything and anything, and everyone at the same time...I mean space travel, probably over mach 5 speed, can pull 180 degree turns from mach 5 speed effectively making a 100+ G turn. And then it can also lock on to hundreds of targets at a time with missiles that flares don't work on...Not even mentioning the full-auto 120mm cannon and LAZORZ...So yea....Better than the F-35 x'D

Ernest Sanchez other way around...they'd been doing swing-wing R&D, called "variable geometry", in the 1960s. The carrier-based F-14 Tomcat got its first flight in 1970, and had long been deployed by 1982. I figure the mechanical designer for SDFM thought, "Here's some really variable geometry for ya."

Actually, according to interview with Shoji Kawamori (the designer of whole variable fighters and director of TV series), he designed Battroid form first and tried to transform it into an aircraft and somehow ended up looking like F-14. Another useless trivia. He tests all those transformations by making mockup model with Lego. That's where he "discovered" GERWALk mode.

All modern combat aircraft are inherently unstable and are only able to fly because onboard computers check them 100 times per second, so I don't see the problem. The VFs are nuclear powered though, and that might be a bit of a problem. :p

No, according to the Macross mecha manual they were powered by a pair of Shinnakasu/P&W/Roice FF-2001 "thermonuclear reaction turbine engines". So if we are to guess by the use of terminology it basically uses fusion powered engines, which is not too far from actual nuclear aircraft engine research being done in the 1940s and -50s.

There was a concept to make a bomber derivative of the F-22 that had no control surfaces and only used thrust vectoring. Good thing it was never built, because if it ever lost both engines, which isn't too improbable for a combat plane, it would just be an unguided flying brick.
