Male is stuck in a small space with a bigger, lethal woman.... He knows two things: 1. As long as she wants him to mate, she is not going to kill him... 2. As soon as he mates her, there is nothing stopping her from killing him... Personally, I think he is showing some serious logical reasoning here, lol!

if i had to hazard a guess, id say the lack of a clear escape route is what made the courtship take so long, in the wild its probably faster where the male can find a way out quickly.

That would b a very sensible reaction cause they r not a species that u should b handling, they aren’t passive & chill like a lot of tarantula species, funnel-webs will tag u in a heart beat & the sydney funnel-web will continue to strike repeatedly too they don’t mess about, there’s even stories of them actually chasing ppl wen they r commuted to biting u, scary stuff, not sure how much truth there is to it but wouldn’t surprise me at all cause they are extremely aggressive critters wen annoyed!..
