Macular Degeneration - The leading cause of BLINDNESS in the world

In today's video we talk about macular degeneration, what is macular degeneration, how does it come about and what we can do to stop it from getting worse.
Macular degeneration is a disease where the retinal pigmented epithelium is damanged due to oxidative damage and cannot metabolise by products produced by the photoreceptors.
By-products accumulate and form drusen which can interfere with our vision. When the RPE sustains enough damage it will break and new blood vessels form inside the retina leading to neovascular macular degeneration or wet macular degeneration.

My mom has to get regular injections and since it's hereditary, I have to constantly monitoring it. When it gets a little out of hand for mom, she says that she sees straight lines as wavy. I also take a multivitamin for other conditions that also includes lutein.

You can do a genetic test to see whether you have mutations that increase your chance of AMD.
