Wild and crazy, but the reality is Io's the most honest person on the battlefield. Unlike characters before like him that treat it as a buisness and/or playground, he despised the concept of child soldiers but knew that those reinforcements gave them a chance on the battlefield during December Sky. When he says stuff about how war comes naturally to him and he's slaughtering troves of zeon soldiers like an animal, he's doing so with lots of experience watching his own allies blow up while he's powerless to stop it. He revels in a sense of justice being able to do that back

And the thing a lot of Daryl Lorenz fans forget (initially myself included) is that Zeon destroyed Side 4, even though they're presumably fighting for the colonies' independence from Earth. If some outside force came into my home town and almost entirely destroyed it and wiped out the bulk of its population, I don't like to admit it, but I'd probably be in the same boat as Io after each kill too.
