Definitely feel for Avalanche and Sundberg in this, imagine having to throw out an entire year of work, complete the game only for it to be stupidly put up against MGS5 and THEN be told by the director of the franchise that he thought the game wasn’t the best, despite most of said issues stemming from WB games’ incompetence. I’d feel the need to defend it too after having to go through that crap.

Not only that. Telling and pleading with your publisher that the release date is going to lead to poor performance and them refusing to change it, and then when you turn out to be right they give you shit for the poor performance of the game. Had that been be i would not have been able to remain calm and would’ve likely slapped whoever said me and my studio was to blame for their incompetence. I really enjoyed the mad max game, and to think it could’ve been larger and better than what it is was sad to hear.

Funny seeing this upload, cause I literally JUST picked up and started playing the game again for the first time in years yesterday. I’ve been having a blast with it. I forgot how fun it was tbh. The map is pretty decent size with lots of things to do like races, camps, convoys, item collection, etc. The customization is great, you can upgrade and change almost every part of Max’s gear and the Magnum Opus. Your progression feels nice and balanced, it’s a nice feeling when you upgrade your knuckle dusters and can actually notice the difference in the damage you’re doing. The combat is awesome, very reminiscent of Shadow of Mordor/Shadow of War and the Arkham games. I find myself actually wanting to get into combat in this game cause it’s just that much fun to me. It’s simple, but addictive once you get it down. And the graphics aren’t that bad, the game still looks good and holds up today despite being nearly a decade old. All in all I think this game is great, not the greatest game of all time or anything, but definitely a fun one to jump in and watch things blow up. The fire and explosion effects in this game look incredible. It’s a very underrated game imo, as I almost never hear anyone talk about it outside of KZbinrs making video essays about how good it is lol. I think it flew under a lot of people’s radar, mostly due to the fact that it’s a licensed video game based on a movie, which aren’t always that great, and due to the year it came out. 2015 was a big year for game releases: Metal Gear Solid V, The Witcher 3, Fallout 4, Batman Arkham Knight, Bloodborne, Black Ops 3, Dying Light, Halo 5, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Mortal Kombat X, Battlefield Hardline, Just Cause 3, Super Mario Maker, etc. Needless to say there were a lot of big titles that came out that year, so Mad Max sadly got overlooked. Which is a shame because, to everyone’s surprise it actually turned out to be pretty fun.

I keep going back to it about once a year because it just compels me to do it all again. I love the stronghold system and how it makes me feel like I'm playing a part of helping the vestiges of humanity live another few days. I can see how the combat draws comparisons to the Arkham games but it's just so perfect for the setting that I don't care. It's also extremely brutal, fitting the desperate scramble for survival of the wasteland. I was a day 1 stan for this game and I don't think anything would make me feel soured to it. I hope Miller reconsiders his statement because I'm sure Kojima could make an amazing Mad Max game, but this was the Mad Max game I always wanted.

Hi. First off, really good video and had some information I didn't know about. I wanted to speak up as someone who has a friend that worked on the production of the movie in an art capacity and therefore was aware of the game development and the concept art that was going out to Avalanche Studios. You're absolutely right to mention the assertion Miller was ignorant of game development; he's very old school (I was told he does *not* use email but rather fax machine and if forced to respond through email he'll take weeks to do so) and fundamentally knew *nothing* at all of how games are made or even what their structure should be. It's definitely something I can confirm (secondhand of course) that WB took control of the development of the game (which is why you get the Arkham combat system bolted in there) and wanted the game out ASAP for the movie, so we got iterations of the Warboys and then all communication ceased with Kennedy Miller Mitchell when they were insistent on hitting their particular deadline. Miller had a storyline (which eventually made its way into the various comics and collected graphic novel) involving the characters Hope and Glory. Though their *concept* makes it into the game, the storyline is wildly, vastly different though the game section of the abandoned aiport was a Miller idea, which is why that section plays extremely tightly. Gastown was still in production sketches and drawings which is why we never see that though I had heard there were plans to expand the game space. To hear about DLC crushes me because I can practically feel the potential and it's just sitting there now, not really doing anything. Anyways, I hope this adds a little more information for you and a bit more perspective.

I literally just walked out of Furiosa. All it really made me want to do was play this game and watch Fury Road because both of them are better lol This game was kind of a hidden gem though. It had the misfortune of coming out I believe the same day as Metal gear solid 5 so it was pretty much doomed to fall into obscurity almost immediately. But it is absolutely one of the better licensed games out there

I love this game and will forever remember it fondly. Mad Max was the dream game I'd imagine as a child, and 2 decades later it came true seemingly out of nowhere. I have to do another playthrough, except on PC this time.

WB doesn't get nearly the same amount of shit from the gaming community as EA or Activision, it's past the time we fixed that.

Great work, as always! Another piece of interesting history surrounding this game was its initial E3 2013 reveal, which sparked up controversy due to Max's American accent, the protest surrounding the choice, led to the hiring of Australian actor Bren Foster. I do think this is one of the positives of delaying the game into 2015, giving the team more time to bring in a new actor to redo the dialogue. Despite that, iirc, there's still scenes in the game where you could hear that American accent slip in, which is likely a remnant of the og voice talent. Interesting little fact.

This game needs a PS5 update.

Absolutely. No idea what WB didn't throw out a Xbox Series/PS5 remaster with QoL improvements and DLC added in for $29.99 when Furiosa dropped. Easy sell.
@icravedeath.12005 ай бұрын
@@MattMcMusclesit runs at up to 120fps on series X using FPS boost and uses quick resume and auto HDR too so I guess Xbox and pc users are eating better then ps5 guys.

The ending is one of the most insulting things regarding player agency I've ever seen. It just takes a giant dump on EVERYTHING you did during the story.
@Enriqueguiones5 ай бұрын
It's a tragic ending, but it definetely works.
@qwesx5 ай бұрын
What do you mean? Except for a brief "distraction" in the final area of the game it fully revolves around a singular objective: getting the car back. The rest is just Max being the person that he is. Maybe you expected Max to be a different person than what he acted to be the entire game?
@funkrobot97625 ай бұрын
@@qwesxhe’s referring the your car being destroyed, I’m assuming.

you should def cover What Happened to Days Gone?" cuz that's just criminally underrated and sad well never see a sequel to it

Miller talking about videogame based on Mad Max while this one went under radar is nuts...

Mad Max is one of my favorite games and is always loaded up on my system. I've played through it 4 times.

Honestly a Hideo Kojima Mad Max game would be insane

I've never seen a Mad Max film before, but when I heard how good this game was from so many people, I knew I had to play it. I had so much fun with it and it's a shame that it didn't succeed as much as it deserved upon launch 😢

Now Scabrous Scrotus is making a lot more sense now that I've seen Furiosa. So it technically helps both that game and Fury Road fit into the same picture.

Chumbucket is in "Furiosa", too
@jaksuperior24705 ай бұрын
Nope, the game is still no canon to movies and Furiosa, because Glory The Child in Fury Road and 2015's game are different, same much with design and lore of mothers

Great Video Matt! One error. when talking about Kojima and MGS versus Mad Max on the top charts. You said "three" but you meant to say "eight".

I can already see that there will be a What Happened to Homeworld 3. One for the original Shin Megami Tensei V would also be nice, just to know what went wrong during the development. After 5 years of silence, what we got was clearly unfinished and it was a bloody miracle what we got was as playable as it was. This just became clearer with the Vengance release which comes across far more as a finished game.

I think the mostly underrated aspect of the game is the setting. I love the idea of it taking place in a dried up seabed. lent itself to a lot or of interesting environments you don’t see in the films

I had a good time with that game, its starts a little rough with your car and max mad out of tissue paper but once you get a few upgrades its starts to be a tone of fun.

Thanks for your videos! I hope you're doing well dude. Yes, it's nearly always the same story, ignorance at the highest level with the publishers etc, and the devs usually just trying their best. The game is one of the best movie inspired games imo, but yeah the mission structure did drag after a while.

I was hoping you had info on why they promised an infinitely generated open world and you could drive until you die or run out of gas. They hinted at it weeks before release only for it to NOT be in the game at all.
