Going into Fury Road, it helps to remember that the Max character in that movie is really supposed to be a man in his 60s. It was supposed to be Mel Gibson, but they moved away from him for reasons. Timeline wise, I believe Charlize Theron's character is about the same age as what Max's child from the first movie would be, if his kid had lived.
