You have to do the plot. That's what makes In Review what it is. That's what makes it unique. There are a million podcasts out there that just review and talk about movies. This is the only one that I know of that goes through the entire plot and discusses everything scene by scene. That's what makes it awesome. Plus it's always hilarious to hear. It's essential to this show.

They didnt get into this, but as a filmmaker one of the things that stood out was how they shot with anamorphic lenses everytime they were in the house which warps the image in a circular shape. The house is where the black hole was connected which was foreshadowing it with the visuals. Ending in morph running in the reflection of the circular tire. I dont know... just thought it was cool 🤙

I was not expecting it but this rewatch solidified that this is my favorite Nolan film. Again, I was NOT expecting it but this was my third watch of Interstellar and it is such a tour de force, it hit different on this go round. I loved hoyte van hoytema's cinematography. This is Hoyte's first film with Nolan. I kinda wish I could have seen Hoyte shoot Inception and past Nolan films as I prefer his photography to Pfsiter's. It is a gorgeous film that I believe some judged too soon. Of all his movies this one truly blows my mind as to how they made it. No film is perfect but this movie took a big swing and knocked it out of the park in my opinion. Definitely has the most heart of all of Nolans films imho.

Not doing the plot is doing this movie a disservice in my opinion. Also it's the main reason why I enjoy these in review discussions. Can't change it now, but yeah these last 2 aren't what I donate on Patreon for. I'm with Andy. I just can't focus on it without the structure of the plot to back it all up and jog my memory.

I think the potential relationship for Anne Hathaway's and Matthew Mcconaughey's characters is based on the fact that they are the only two surviving people who experienced and went through what they went through you know? So I think the romantic aspect is mostly based off that first and romanticism second.

The "love" thing is supposed to sound wild and stupid. But the thing here is at the end, Anne got lucky(?) with the planet choice, and it makes you think "what if love WAS quantifiable?"
@vinnybastos
@vinnybastos 4 жыл бұрын
I feel like that is just making excuses for a badly written scene. It's THE moment in which the filmmaker tries to drive home the entire point of his movie, and you propose he made it bad on purpose? To me the explanation is simpler: Nolan is a cold, rational filmmaker that decided to hinge his entire movie on an aspect of storytelling he doesn't fully dominates; emotional storytelling. So when he needs to explain why Hathaway is doing something for love and not rationality, it sounds like an android trying to explain Affection for the first time.

What they don't bother to extrapolate is that "love" is a word tied to some sort of interpersonal association. In this case, it is quantifiable, but more so because the story is told deterministically. It had a beginning, middle, and end. In the middle she had her monologue shared by not only the other characters but with us the audience. If her monologue had not occurred, there would be no "aha" moment regarding her hypothesis on love. It may not be true, but because she brought it up, it has a possibility of being true (Murphy's Law). Time being one of the main themes of the movie; if you consider life moving deterministically, everything is causal. So in order for "love is quantifiable" to have any significance to us requires us to have such an idea in the first place.

If you had a problem with the ending (like Tim), look up videos that explain the multiple dimensions. Its important to understand these dimensions exist, but visually interpreting them is up to ones imagination as we are stuck in the third. Nolan's interpretation of these dimensions is genius and may simply be too complex for some but should not demerit it from being considered anything other than a masterpiece.
@cameronwansley9049

Just to help clarify Tim & Kevin's understanding of why /space/ is an important factor in altering gravity: The whole reason why /space/ is always mentioned when altering "space & time" is that the entire universe is in motion at all times *as well as* in all /places/. For instance, if I had a time machine & I told it to send me forward 100 years in an attempt to see what the future world is like, when I pop out on the other side there would be no Earth because the planet would have moved many astronomical units away. If I program my time machine to jump forward 100 years *in addition to* moving a predicted amount of distance matching Earth's current trajectory, I would pop out on the other end in the precise location I left. When you apply this to the watch, altering the second-hand's relativistic gravity *in space time* would mean that the specific pocket of spacetime that you altered will always have its own dedicated pocket of gravitational disturbance. When you go a step higher & consider that the gravitational adjustment was made from the 5th dimension where their understanding of spacetime is significantly more advanced than our own, it's feasible that *from that dimension* you would be able to create a localized pocket of spacetime centered around a physical 4th-dimensional object, therein allowing it to have its own special properties that don't fit with our 4th-dimensional understanding of the world. Think of it like attaching a virus to an email in its background functions; That email can go wherever it wants, but it has a special set of rules applied to it forever that will replicate whenever it meets certain criteria. You can also think of it like attaching a geo-tag to a physical object, which then uses multiple unseen sources (GPS satellites, regional time & distance information) to provide data in the background passively that you can access through specific devices. If a 5th-dimensional being experiences *all* of time at once, it stands to reason that they would already know the entire projected life path of where that watch will travel & how it will be interacted with, thus whatever unique gravitational properties they assigned to it could be scheduled to move in spacetime along with the watch with utter precision. In the Interstellar scenario, the gravitational pocket has been assigned to the second-hand through a 5th-dimensional concept that we don't understand but which runs on its own systems nonetheless, so even though it doesn't make sense how it could exist whilst moving through many years & many miles, it still holds true to the idea that the specific /space/ & /time/ properties of the gravitational anomaly have been pre-programmed through some higher-entity algorithm to follow the watch itself across the entirety of spacetime. I'm sure that's not nearly enough layman's speak to truly grasp the concept without talking in-person, but the deeper you dive into this shit the better it gets. Definitely check out Michio Kaku's many astrophysical books, as he beautifully outlines all the stranger concepts in science like just how many dimensions have been theorized (thus far 10 peer-reviewed levels, but as many as 26 have been proposed).

I love and adore this film so much, I had a different reaction when I first saw it but after reading the book "The Science behind Interstellar" by Dr. Kip Thorne and seeing this film multiple times afterwards made me appreciate so much especially for how it's so deep with the science and the commitment behind making sure it's not fictional or fantasy in that regard. This is a very well-made special film that I wish Hollywood would make more films like it and Arrival. Sci-Fi films that are deep in science and in human thoughts and emotions.

God, Nick is so right when he says Interstellar is ultimately grounded in reality TO A SUFFICIENT DEGREE up until we need to wonder past what we know in science... but then he's so off when remarking on the Inception bit. It's not that hard for humans to relate and/or be invested in a fantastical story as long as the rules set by the story's world aren't broken. Inception never does that, it only clarifies and gives the rules more depth. When contrasting Inception with Interstellar, you realize the Interstellar's "puzzle" is big, grand, immediate, but also blunt, simple, easy to understand, while Inception's "puzzle" is all in all similar, more complicated, but more rewarding for it. Ranking these two is very difficult. They're both master class films. Inception at the surface level is much grander than a man having to do his job, but it'd riddled with metatextual lessons. Interstellar is space meets father-daughter tale, and it preaches love in the most extreme setting. Whichever move you prefer just speaks to what you value more.

The cinematography, sound and score in this movie are on point. It's really the first time where it feels like Nolan is *using* his creative tool set more than he is *marveling at it*. The takeoff sequence, the lapsed-time sequence, the sequence with Dr. Mann; it's all so effective at heightening the moment to moment drama with the characters. He's yet to transcend sentimentaility in any of his stories, but he's getting closer and closer to the characters which is what my #1 priority is with most any film. Loved it on opening night and continue to - even after many repeat viewings. 1. Interstellar 2. The Prestige 3. Insomnia 4. Inception 5. Memento 6. The Following

I just don’t think Tim understands parts of the movie and he thinks that makes it a bad movie, in this specific review he’s acting so authoritative like his opinion that inception is the better movie is based on fact and not on his opinion. I think you misunderstood the ending. I don’t think Murphy sent Cooper away because he has a sense of adventure or anything. Matt Damon says when you have someone to love you’ll survive longer to see them again. That’s what Murphy was doing. She knew Cooper was coming back, she says so at the end. I think she was gonna die that day and lived just to see Cooper, but then says “A parent shouldn’t have to see their child die”. Though I do think it’s unrealistic that he wouldn’t want to meet his grandkids and see if his son was still alive.

Hathaways character is probably dead or a grandma herself by the time Coop reaches her since I’m pretty sure cooper lost an additional 60 or so years in the black hole since he was 120 years old by the end of the movie and he was maybe mid to late 30s at the beginning which means he was in space for 80-90 years. They lost 23 years on millers planet, and maybe like 2-3 years doing everything else in the film so that extra 55 or so years he dilated, Hathaway didn’t.

I did too and it explains much in his thinking. Those arguments in film school were good especially as I was often the only person of color

Not to be the lord of facts but Hoyte Van Hoytema was the cinematographer not Wally Pfister, he went off to direct a terrible sci-fi movie instead.
