Those people arguing that the Mad Max franchise has been hijacked by some form of feminist agenda have no clue what they're talking about. The shotgun wielding old woman who bravely stands up to Toecutters gang in MM1, Virginia Heys "Warrior Woman" in MM2, "Aunty Entity" played by Tina Turner in MM3... the Mad Max movies have ALWAYS had strong female characters.

Stu Saville You've made the mistake of thinking people are saying these movies were against women, what they're saying by claiming these movies were hijacked by a feminist agenda is that these movies make all men look bad while making all women look good. Men are portrayed as crazed violent and selfish while women are portrayed as sane peaceful and selfless. Can you name one bad woman in these films?

Stu Saville I've watched the trilogy and you are right. But how is the movie? Is it feminist preachy unlike the previous movies because that would be a real turnoff for me. Because I've heard that a feminist was involved in this film. I'm not against strong women at all but I don't like it shoved down my throat.
@takanara7
@takanara7 9 жыл бұрын
Mog Gles George Miller himself said he considers himself a "feminist" so you better not see it! The other feminist who was "involved" in the project is the woman wrote the vagina monologs, she was a consultant. If you hate strong independent women you won't like this movie, that's for sure.

This movie blew me away. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed it. It is what cinema is for. To blow your mind and leave you walking out of the theatre and back into the world blinking with your mind alive. What hit me was how poignant and emotionally resonant it was, how it has big themes but is still essentially a two hour chase movie. And Miller directs it so superbly. For me, its not just the best movie of 2015 so far, its arguably the greatest (or one of the greatest) action movies ever made.

I was one of those guys that didn't care at all for this movie when the first trailer hit, when the guy said "what a lovely day", and that weird operatic music with that sandstorm I was like "what the hell is this?" it didn't peak my interest, instead it weirded me out. Then a couple of months later I see this gets critical acclaim and I was like "huh...wait..what?" so I took a gamble and saw it yesterday.. This is what a movie should be, THIS is what theatres are made for, this is something you CANNOT watch on TV, this is ment to be seen on a extra large screen in 3D with Dolby Atmos sound. It blew me away, at first I wasn't aware to the undergrounding themes within the movie, it was only when I came out that I thought "hey, there's a shitload of meaningfull stuff in there as well". I was so amazed I even saw it today AGAIN in two days time!! For a movie that's almost an entire action scene, they put in so much in there, the detail in world building, the design of the cars, everything was perfect. It's been a long time since I came out of a theatre and wanted to know EVERYTHING about that world, I was like "is there a novel for this movie? Or an art book or just something?" I didn't expect this, it's so refreshing actually after all these MCU movies going on, don't me wrong I love the MCU , but I'm sorry, this was just levels above Age of Ultron for movie and I was hyped as shit for that movie for 2 years! And I think Warner Brothers made a brilliant move with trusting George Miller, I only knew him from Happy Feet lol :') I mean they let Peter Jackson do his thing with the Hobbit movies as well even though it wasn't that great, it was still HIS vision, the same for The Great Gatsby. I can't say good enough things about this movie, and for everyone who thinks this is "too out there" for your taste, boy are you missing out on something great. Is it weird sometimes? Yes, but as you're walking out of the theatres, it's like you went on a 2 hour trip to another world, and that's something I hardly get these days with a cinematic experience. Just wow.

Grace I think you misunderstood what Miller was trying to show with that line of "Maybe it'll be a girl" Miller gives us two versions of society one run by men (Immortan Joe) the other by women (Furiosa's tribe). Notice how neither society thrived. Which is why it was so important to show Furiosa and the women going back to Citidel. Men can't live in a patriarchy and be successful but you know what Women can't only iive in a matriarchy and be successful. It'll take both. Which is the message of the film. Best shown by Furiosa and Max helping each other. The desert women had a skewed version just like Joe (though they were way less egregious).
@drewske1984

14:00 I believe the reason why Furiosa was able to become a general alongside with the main villain was because she was missing an arm. and all of the villain's wives were perfect in health and looks. When Max shoots at one of the wives and grazes her leg with a bullet, Furiosa later tells max that that would be basically a death sentence if he found out he gave her a minor wound. So with Furiosa not being 100 percent intact, he found another use for her and maybe did still see some beauty in her. That's just what I think.

Two things Grace. You are right about the movement. It did not start with Mad Max: Fury Road, but it out there and, in my opinion, dangerous in that it is leading to something very unpleasant. I've had to cancel what I used to think of a great comedy or review KZbin channels because the men suddenly interject video after video blaming feminism for every problem they have in their own lives. I do not think they should be ignore, I think they should be engaged. Because like FOX News or the right-wing/tea party in general they win an argument by shouting with one unreasonable voice, and the only way to counter that is by reasonable voices shouting just as loudly. My 2nd thing. Grace, Zoe Karvitz is the daughter of Lenny Kravitz (Black) and Lisa Bonet (black.) She's not "half-white." I like her as an actress, but I hope she doesn't become Hollywood's light-skinned excuse for black representation in movies. That's a tread I agree is wrong even if it really has nothing personally to do with the actress herself who only wants to work in her field. I did not see the movie yet but I'm going to. Spoilers does not ruin movies for me at all, in fact it makes me want to see them more.

Beyond The Trailer The Zoe Kravitz thing is a heck of a conversation, I'll leave it at that. As to my experience with those channels, I don't feel bad. I have channels like yours who opinions I might not always agree with but you are, in fact, a reasonable voice. I am going to enjoy the movie more now that I've seen your review. I can't wait to see where I agree or disagree. You KZbin reviewers have made that a part of the movie going fun.

***** You're right, in South Africa (or Africa) India (untouchables) Europe and Asia, they make absolutely no distinction between races. It only happens in America, in fiction books that is. Zoe and Mariah are considered black because they are, in fact, black. The actual brainwashing the BS "Mixed" label. It serves on specific purpose, and most certainly that purpose is not for the good of black people.

***** You know everyone in Africa? Your Twitter follow number must be amazing. And "black African?" Am I missing something? Because that implies another kind of African? Maybe Discovery Channel's ancient aliens thing is right, because far as I know there's only one kind of African. (Unless there's some other kind of Asians and Europeans too.) History is like the bible, lots of people claim to know it but have never really studied it.

Umar Soaries There are black Africans, and white Africans, and Asian Africans ... What Victor says is true. For example, in South Africa, mixed people generally refer to themselves as "coloured", with some exceptions. There are, unfortunately, a handful of people who've been influenced by American politics who now subscribe to the one drop rule (a rule with its roots in racism), but that's almost universally not the case. Kravitz is mixed race, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Wow why did you instantly move to women's issues when men are also suffering in western society, feminism has made no dispute over male issues and has been attacking men for making the argument. That's why people see feminism as a hate movement today as well as stimulating alot of misandry. Feminism focuses on the advocacy of women's rights but when men are disadvantaged feminists do not get involved.
@chrisclarke4665
@chrisclarke4665 9 жыл бұрын
The reason there are so many male focused movements is because men are disenfranchised in society and in feminism and yet people attack them for existing. MRAs are the exception because they demand for more patriarchal rights.

You mean like how opposition to feminism suggests that i defy woman's rights when i'm suggesting that the opposition towards the movement is merely because of their dogmatic approach and negative depiction in the media. As well as Grace Randolf stating that the reason people are anti feminist is because they are clearly misogynists when it is for a multitude of reasons.

The female characters in this movie were so badass and complete. There were no straw feminists or harmful tropes. Furiosa was capable and intelligent and truly Max's equal. The bride's carried their weight, they weren't damsels in distress and Furiosa's tribe brought the pain. That's how equality in media is truly achieved, when everyone portrayed as real people.

I feel like the real misconception of women is that we have to be either soft or strong and that's very apparent in hollywood when in reality we are both. A woman has the gentle hands it takes to put a tiny newborn baby to sleep but she also has the strength to defend that baby THAT is a fact and a metaphor. Women are not physically as strong as men but they are able to fight in different ways and if they cannot fight back they will eventually be more resistant to the hatd world out there and that is our strength. Men go crazy very easily and are powerless to the things they can't physically conquer. That's why we need both men and women.
@johnbelt5204
@johnbelt5204 9 жыл бұрын
The idea of women as property or "things" is a standard in history and still exists in the world today. Just look at the Middle East or parts of Africa. Women are treated like chattel, often of less value than cattle or goats. The thin veil of society, at least the one we enjoy today, would fall away pretty quickly in an apocalyptic event. Killing for food, water or access to the ability to breed could very easily become the standard. On the other hand, it is not hard to believe that a society of women that control men by controlling access to propagation is not hard to imagine. The need and desire to breed is as basic as the need to eat or even survive. I think that is a reason women have and still are treated or sometimes thought of as property. It has nothing to do with men being stronger or killing mammoths, it's a desire to keep "things" of desire safe from theft or damage.

One thing about your comment in how Furiosa became an Imperator, Grace, is while I don't how she became one, I think several of her actions hinted that her appearance did serve to be an issue for her in the past. For example, in the very beginning and midway into the movie , the top of her head was painted black, and we learned it was the residue from the steering wheel when she put it on herself when she was meeting those people in the canyon. Her hair is cut short, but not in the feminine way of Zoe Kravitz's character, and finally, she was missing an arm. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if she cut it off herself.

I think Charlize carried the film; I love Tom Hardy but he felt more like the sidekick. Performance wise, Theron gave the best female performance in a sci-fi film since 1992 when Sigourney Weaver did David Fincher's 'Alien 3'; and it's not just because they both have a buzz cut. Both performances featured a female lead who is pushed to the extremes; vulnerable but also empowered, tough and exciting to watch. BIG thumbs up from this guy!

Mad Max: Fury Road is the fourth of the MAD MAX series, the last one came out 30 years ago stared Mel Gibson and they all were directed by George Miller. Mad Max: Fury Road is all what an action movie should be a thrill ride from start to finish. Okay Grace, like Furiosa, you have earn redemption with this review (and with a zero body count). I will say that I have seen it twice now and still feel the search for purpose and meaning is the most powerful aspect of the story. As you said, Furiosa goes home and finds even greater redemption. Nux is looking for a death with meaning and finds the power of sacrifice (and Riley Keough's response mirroring the many mothers earlier was subtly powerful). And Max finds survival in quieting some of his demons. In fact, you could belabor the point and say the characters lean to live, which "sounds like hope". I do think Tom Hardy is trying to avoid something like Russel Crowe's oft repeated stoic with a heart. There were moments that could have been like Maximus', "are you not entertained?" speech had they not been so underplayed. Also, I think Max telling Furiosa his name was far more intimate than most of what Hollywood offers these days. I'll end by touching on the level of preparation that went it this. This has been years in the making and that probably helped. Supposedly there are 3500 fully illustrated panels for the story boards. They had the story and playbook down pat and knew where exactly they were going. You talk about world build a lot. Doing something well though usually means taking the time to do it right. Thinking through some of the major epic adventure stories, it seems a lot of the creators talk about how they were doing other work and their grand sweeping epic just grew over time in their imagination.

The movie is a Mad Max movie though. It does have a female thread (s), but it does function as HIS story. The women were partly a convenience for Max to redeem himself for letting people die (hence the flashbacks). He did the right thing for them and Himself - firstly. Either way the film works on multiple levels which is partly why it's great.

As an artist and a budding story teller I loved Mad Max, beautiful and gothic. Grace go back an watch the originals, Fury Road is a bigger longer better version of the key set piece from "The Road Warrior". I also thought how Max is haunted by his past is brilliant, it's enough to get you invested in him without rehashing his back story, because it is tragic how he lost his wife and daughter in the original before it went total post apocalypse.

Grace, I love your analysis of this film! I have an immense amount of respect for George Miller's vision, mission and execution. If the feminist, misogynists, and all other "-ists" strip gender from these characters, you are still left with incredibly well realized characters in a basic adventure for survival, freedom and home.

On the topic of sequels. There are actually 3 cities: the Citadel, Bullet Town, and Gas Town (or whatever the names were). There were also the various tribes in the gaps between the towns. Max could easily have two more movies where he goes to the other cities in the aftermath of the fall of the Citadel.

I love love Baz Luhrmann's Great Gatsby , it's just so pretty and embodied what I read on the page, not exactly like the book but I think it got the spirit right. But it's risky letting creative talent have it all, and I think studios are aware of the risk. I feel when creative talent has most of the control its product always polarizes people, they either love it or not.

whats even more ironic is that this move is getting beat by pitch perfect, which you know is women. so its more men coming to see mad max, which is so odd that women are supporting pitch perfect while men are supporting mad max, just think about it you will see how ironic it is.

(SPOILER) I thought the ending of this movie was also extremely powerfull because it beautifully underlined what the movie was about and who the characters really were. So you see Furiosa, who just lost everything including her motivation in life, literally rising above what previously troubled her. In addition with the end quote: She found a new path in the world, a new hope and as a result she is trying to be the best person she can be. You also see Max finally accepting the mistakes he made in the past which allows him to stop fighting for a moment and just blend in with the crowd. To me this, in combination with previous messages, themes and motivations in the film, was truly inspiring and unique and really struck a chord.

Genuinely caring about character lives is the best. Like, seriously, my favorite scene in Kingsman: The Secret Service was Harry's death BECAUSE it was so unexpected. It broke the 4th wall and told you that this is not James Bond and that people can actually die here, and BAM! The super handsome british good guy spy that just killed an entire hate church....Died. I gasped and stayed open mouthed when he died for the next few scenes. That was incredible.

One of the best movies I've seen so far this year. So glad I went to see, I had to go by myself, but hell it was worth it. I wasn't even really planning or looking forward to this movie until a couple of weeks before its release. I love how the women were portrayed especially Furiosa. I also loved how the rest of the women, even though they weren't the most skilled fighter etc. They all contributed to something, there weren't just dead weight and plot devices to put the main characters in danger. Which is usually the case with women and children in this sort of story line (delivery mission to the safe haven kind of plot). They all had their individual strengths that made them all memorable, I loved and cared for each one of them. The sort of didn't like the , 'it could be a girl line', as you pointed out it was exclusionary. But in the context of the story and the character who said it, it made sense coming from them. Another thing I didn't was how the 'scene', were Max took out the blind general with the tank like car, happened off screen. I would have liked to see that, but then again. Maybe it would have been hard to make it convincing that Max could take out a mini tank on his own like that. I loved Nux, the way they made his change sides. It was believable and it made sense. It wasn't some instate-nous change of heart. You could follow his thinking along with him. I would have liked the typical happy ending for him. But the ending we made me happy well. In a way it was happy, because he when he finally did die, it was for a good cause and not some BS he was fed. I'd like to go on, but I've go on for long enough.

Loooove so many of the things you touch on! Thank you for doing this! I've been looking for a review that actually discusses the movie instead of simply labeling it "badass" and moving on, because I felt like it was SO much more than a dumb action movie. Love that you touched on the "witness" aspect of the War Boys. I thought that was absolutely beautiful, how Nux wants to throw his life away for nothing at the start of the movie. But later he manages to regain his humanity when he is SHOWN humanity by one of the wives. Again, just incredibly beautiful. And then his ultimate sacrifice, for a good cause, and he tells them to witness him. So perfect. Another thing I loved about this movie was that it was a post-apocalyptic movie without any cynicism, sarcasm or irony. It was pure. There is one line, one of the wives says something like "Then who killed the world!" but other than that, it is simply depicted as it is. At the end, when they return to the Citadel with the corpse of Joe, my Walking Dead mind is thinking "Okay, you deposed one tyrant and replaced him with another! This fixes nothing!" But it was quickly put out of my head because the movie NEVER suggests that. It never suggests that Furiosa will even lead. It is Furiosa's story of personal redemption through her selfless act of saving the wives. And when the wives are safe, that's the end - chapter closed. Again, thank you! This movie really felt like a special moment in cinema history to me. It puts so many other movies to shame.

After reading a Tribune Newspapers review, and feeling a little discouraged as the score didn't really reflect the tone of the article, I certainly appreciate your insight. As a fan of action films, I personally don't care who's the lead(s) - but I commend Theron, Hardy and Miller do some great(understatement) work - I interpreted the holding back that you described Hardy doing as him trying to play the Mad Max character who continues to evolve in this 4th film - but, it's not just that character that has a path here, I think Fury Road itself is an amazing evolution to the Mad Max setting and done so so (so) well. I'd love to see this do well at the box office and I myself am trying to pre-order a dvd of this already!

Hey grace, I loved this movie and was aware of the social commentary, I'm all for it and as a guy who enjoys both movies that make social commentary and are clearly only made for that purpose as well as action movies I thought this was a perfect blend. I was thinking about what you said about furiosa not being picked to be a wife of imortan joe and I was thinking maybe it was because of her loss of an arm, I don't remember if they said how she lost her arm but if it was a birth defect I think it would explain why she wasn't picked because how was looking for his version of perfection which is why he didn't just replace his wives when they were "stolen". Thanks for another great video keep up the great work! :)

I thought it was quite humorous but beautifully powerful. Truly an amazing film. One thing though, Great Gatsby wasn't a strike as far as I know. It made about 350 million worldwide with a 105 million budget, so that's about 140 million in earnings. I remember people were quite positive about the film, and it was a big hit.

Furiosa being such a prevalent character does not surprise me at all. Max has always been kind of the stoic observer. He's not the main character of the original film until around the second half, and he only has 16 lines in The Road Warrior. He's shaped by events around him.

Beyond The Trailer Before anyone says that Max didn't have a CHARACTER ARC, you have to know, that a main protagonist in a story DOES NOT have to have one - as long as another character does. In this case, Furiosa carried the protagonist ARC. This is not the first time it has been used in films. In Classic James Bond movies, James Bond is the same person he was in the beginning and by the end of a story, but another character would be the one that LEARNED or CHANGED by the end. Max contributed to decisions that took the plot to new directions and ultimately benefited Furiosa as a person by the end. That was his PURPOSE in the story. Great film.

Great review, Grace! I just finished watching this about 30 minutes ago and it was so good! I definitely want to go see it again, very soon! I loved the world building and the cast was so good! I'm not the biggest fan of Tom Hardy, but I really liked his performance in the film. You are so spot on about Charlize Theron's performance as Furiosa and I loved it! I loved how she was able to be tough but also soft, but it seemed so natural, she didn't push for either side too much. It was such a beautiful performance. As for Immorten Joe deciding not to have Furiosa bear his child, I think that her loss of her arm turned him off. I think he wanted "perfect" women to bear his offspring, no defects. So many things I want to say but it seems it's mostly me saying "I agree". Ive also been awake last last night and I'm fallinh asleep lol

I wanted to see this, for the feminism. But minorities not being a part of the post-apocalyptic world is so typical in many white films, esp of those in the past. I think the audience could've accepted black and non-white folks without so much as blinking. To say that race would've complicated matters is too easy. Folks may still be racist but they can see or not see race if some other issue is involved. Love Camus' quote. Reminds me of what church folk say: "Bloom where you're planted." Thanks for the review.

I'll also throw out there that the Star Wars Prequels were the uncompromised vision of a single filmmaker unrestrained by the limitations of budget to make his artistic vision come to life. So the "fund the artists and give them control" thing has to be approached cautiously.

okay, this is my son's youtube account but I needed to use it to try to get some explanation of details of Mad Max. First of all, I LOVED IT!!! The action was awesome! and I love movies where I actually feel bad about the characters that get killed in the movie. I liked the mad max movies in general, but the only reason why I was so interested in seeing this one especially is because the added female role of Charlize Therone! I appreciate the point that you had made about "needing to go back home to deal with whatever issues that were there", because there was a guy at work who had said it was "stupid because they went all that way and then just came back to the same place". Now I get it! I love the feminism point that you brought up. I think it has a lot of truth to it. I think it is EXCELLENT that we finally have a woman movie review, you bring more in depth understanding and underlying issues and points in the movie. I was getting tired of hearing the profanity of men reviews and just commenting on all the actions parts of the movies. I love action movies and I can watch them just like the "big boys", but I love when movies have more meaning to them than what meets the eye! Keep up the meaningful entertainment reviews and thanks for the explanation of a lot of details that had been overlooked or unappreciated! Valerie-AWESOME REVIEW! LOVED IT!

I think Mad Max maybe a new favorite movie for me! Nux and Furisoa stole the show to me! Their characters were so complex! Nux was the character that developed the most throughout the film. His development was so organic and wonderful! I really loved his character! His budding romance with Capable was so adorable and innocent! I'm amazed at how much they were able to mix danger, innocents, enthusiasm and kindness in one character and it not feel overdone! What an AMAZING character! grin emoticon Furiosa was a Queen of badassery! She was everything Wonder Woman should be! She was a hardened warrior who was still compassionate and maternal. This made her seem even stronger for it! She'd show emotions and pain because even with all she'd gone through, she hadn't shut down! I can not think of anything more powerful! I loved the wives too! Capable was my favorite. She was sweet and compassionate, but still came off very strong! Her name was fitting. The Dag was also quite kind. Toast was a badass. Splendid was selfless, but naive at times. They all came off like how real women would act in their situation and were becoming stronger for it! This movie is a feast for the eyes in every scene! I expected to cringe at some parts, but they never took a scene to far in my opinion. That's become pretty rare, especially in rated R movies. They balanced every scene PERFECTLY! I wouldn't take young kids, but EVERY ADULT should see this movie!

I have to say the 3d ads a LOT to the movie. It definitely looks like it was shot in native 3d, not a 3d conversion "pop-up" book movie. It really ads so much to so many of the scenes and really gives you a sense of distance and scale you don't get in 2d.

I usually reserve my 3D viewing for animated movies like Frozen and How to Train You Dragon, but the second time I saw Age of Ultron I saw it in 3D and it looked three times better than the first Avengers. Mad Max: FR's 3D blew Age of Ultron out of the water. This is the kind of movie 3D was meant for. Take The Road Warrior and the last 3 Fast and Furious movies, and you still don't get the same amount of excitement and especially tension that you got in the final chase alone. With so much action going on for long stretches of time, you would think you'd get a little fatigued, but the movie does have a few "breather" moments, so when the action starts up again you're ready go. As for the "messages" in the movie, yeah, they are there and they will get people thinking about them. For myself, I saw female characters who were just as well written as the male characters. But I especially like the matter-of-fact way these messages were presented, the movie doesn't beat you over the head with anything, it just shows you the way this world is. The worst bigots, racists, etc; are the ones who don't believe they're doing anything wrong, or even worse, that they believe what they're doing is right or justified. And I don't mind that Mad Max isn't the protagonist of the movie. He is the title character (more so than Zelda is a part of her own Legend, heheheheh) and these are his adventures. The Road Warrior and Thunderdome were different stories with different people and those people never see Max ever again. So if they stay true to form, another Mad Max movie won't include any of the characters from this movie. As much as I would love to see another Mad Max movie, I would REALLY want to see another movie about Furiosa!
