I look at the Mad Max movie timeline in much the same way as the Conan story timeline: each movie is just an adventure from his life, each is a random period (other than the original coming first)

When I saw Fury Road on opening night, I was so afraid it would be bad--especially without Mel. Ten minutes in, I was already blown away and riveted to the screen. I ended up watching it ten times in the theater, from opening night on the main IMAX screen to when it was playing in the tiny off-side theater. Hands down one of the best action movies ever put to film, and some of the best action editing of any movie. Action scenes had become boring and incomprehensible (thank M. Bay!), but Fury Road was able to keep your awareness and excitement--you knew where everything was and could follow where it was going. Despite the absolute chaos all around, you weren't confused. Then for such a simple story, the background is so rich and deep. Every detail speaks volumes, and there's history. The world is completely fleshed out and real. On its face, it's simply a chase from one side and then back to the start. But so much happens along this chase and there are so many fascinating characters. A story told as much in the visuals as it is in the dialog and action.

I first saw Mad Max II (aka The Road Warrior) at a drive in with my step-dad. We were originally gonna go watch last showing of E.T. that night, but it was sold out by the time we got to the ticket booth. Mad Max had just started five minutes earlier, so knowing nothing about the movie, we got tickets. I love E.T., and no shade on Spielberg, but the Mad Max movies have had a bigger impact on my life etc.

The guy who played Immortan Joe in Fury Road and Toecutter in the first Mad Max, Hugh Keays-Byrne, was also another classic baddie in yet another Aussie post-apocalypse movie playing Lord Vile in Salute of the Jugger (aka The Blood of Heroes in the US), my favourite 80s b-movie starring Rutger Hauer. That's well worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

I agree 100 percent. The international version "Salute of the Jugger" is one of my favorite movies. The idea of a post- apocalypse sports movie is so novel and I believe it's one of Rutger Hauer's best performances. "Play hard, you'll forget the fear."

Where did the idea of the Mad Max series come from? For me they always take me back to reading On the Beach, an apocalyptic novel published in 1957, written by British author Nevil Shute after he emigrated to Australia. Then it throws naptha on those ideas and lights a match.

I'll add a controversial opinion that Mad Max: Fury Road is even better in 3D. While it wasn't filmed with 3D in mind (and done post processing), it is gorgeous. You're drawn into the vast desert landscape. The orientation and position of the vehicles during the chase are easier to track. Little to nothing is thrown into your face, instead it's about looking into the world. If you have a VR headset and access to the 3D side-by-side, use apps like Virtual Desktop or Big Screen to rewatch the movie. Tips: set screen vertical size to just within your vertical field of view meaning you need to look left and right to see everything. Also, curve the screen to remove the parallax so the side edges are same height when you look there. If you can, set the location to desert themed environment,

I love this show! You know that Cherize Theron has a personal force field. She attended a wedding of a friend and there were no people within 5 feet of her. If you walked into that area -- man, woman or small animals would be overcome by her beauty an would not be able to breath. If she smiled at you, the blood would suddenly drop from your head to what seemed to be your feet and you would be in danger of fainting. She is that beautiful in person...

I liked Mad Max Fury Road and the story was fine where it was at. Yeah, we the average audience don't get many of those. The only thing I hated at the time was some of the lame angry men critics trying to lay on the political grift trip. That was the nature of the original Road Warrior Mad Max movies. It just gave a straightforward hard story of a man in the wasteland. Nothing more and nothing less. Please think about doing a review breakdown of New Jack City or Scarface next.

I too have a problem with Thunderdome, but it's not related to tension. I just feel like all the other Mad Max movies tread a very thin line between drama and absurd comedy, but Thunderdome at some point just goes into absurdity wholesale. Around the moment when the little person reappeared wearing a tuxedo with a top hat for no reason, I just couldn't take the movie seriously anymore. It was like it became a parody of itself. I appreciate the absurd and funny stuff in these movies, but only as long as it serves a purpose in the story and makes sense in the context of the world. But that's just my opinion, of course. And in regards to your comparison between the first movie and the Road Warrior, I personally like to draw the parallel with the Evil Dead and the Evil Dead 2. When in the second movie the director gets the resources to fully realize his ideas for the first one and just goes nuts.

I am the night rider!!! Wow... growing up in Australia in the 80's, Mad Max was huge, especially with muscle car culture "last of the V8's baby". I never thought the first one was post apocalypses... that all started in Mad Max 2 (or what was released as The Roadwarrior in the US). i just thought it was some alternate world in rural New South Wales (same state as Sydney) before the apocalypse happened. What I was never aware of is that their is a dubbed version with American accents. WTF... the original in in English. I guess the Aussie accent in the earlier 80's was too much for American audiances? Crazy.

Fury Road had a lot of criticism that Max doesn't talk much, and that he's relegated to a side character in his own movie, but I don't agree with that. The scene where he retaliates for example, when he grabs a gun and a knife and goes into the darkness. The movie doesn't show what he did to those guys, the movie doesn't need to explain to the audience that he's a badass. You already know this. That's why the focus is on establishing other characters - like Furiosa.

33:26 - I *love* that Ty feels the same way about the MM universe as I do!! That is to say, I love the idea that these stories are just... somewhere & sometime in Max's life. They're like episodes of his journey, like each movie is the highlight event of 'that one year' in Max's life, whenever it happened. It's also in tune with Max's ending in Fury Road, how he just disappears into the crowd. It adds to the character's mythos. He lived his life, he was a part of these events that took place for other people, and life goes on.

I can see that. But, the thing is, there are dates in the movies that would suggest the time period of each movie. Also, allegedly, Fury Road was supposed to have taken place after Thunderdome. However, if that were the case, this Max is way too young. Max would've been 55+ yrs old at least. I don't think it's written this way, but there are many things in the movie that would suggest that this is not Mel Gibson Max's character but instead it could be said that it's the feral kid from The Road Warrior. Just to name 3 examples. In the blue scene during the journey through the storm, Max pulled a metal boomerang of the side of the War Rig like he put that there, when he went after the Bullet Farmer. Max or no one else ever had a metal boomerang except for the feral kid in Mad Max 2. Secondly, the little music box. Max gave that to the kid in 2 so how did one of Immortan Joe's wives get it? At the end of 2, the kid goes away with the Gyro Captain to start a civilization in the North sector. Remember, Fury's Max was captured in the beginning and they took his Interceptor. I would assume they took any possession he had on him as well. 🤔 The Interceptor was destroyed in 2 also and no Interceptor in Thunderdome. Lastly, Mel Gibson never grunted ever in any movie. Tom Hardy grunts through half the movie. Well, who was grunting in any Mad Max movie? The feral kid. I don't think it's written that way in the script but it makes for an interesting discussion because Tom did a great acting job but this Max doesn't coincide with Mel Gibson's Max.

The recent video game was developed alongside the movie, and at some point, the movie script was stripped down to the very basic road chase and the video game took everything else. The game has some very repetitive elements because of the open world aspect, but the storyline is amazing and engaging. The thing that the video game gives away that the movie doesn't really disclose is that the oceans have dried up, and fresh water is super scarce. At least in the video game you see a lot of nautical remnants of oil rigs and super-tankers because your driving around on the floor of a dried up ocean.

Even though Ty may never see this, I have to comment on something that's been bugging me since watching this episode... So, here goes: Stork Wake in Fright Walkabout The Adventures of Barry McKenzie Alvin Purple The Cars That Ate Paris Stone The Man From Hong Kong Picnic at Hanging Rock Caddie The Devil's Playground Don's Party Mad Dog Morgan Storm Boy The Getting of Wisdom The Last Wave The Picture Show Man The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith Long Weekend Newsfront Patrick Dimboola My Brilliant Career The Odd Angry Shot and... Mad Max -Just some of the 200 or so feature films released in Australia in the 1970s. Many of these are considered 'Classics'. Even if you don't know the films, you may have heard of some of the "up and coming" Directors of the day: Peter Weir Bruce Beresford Phillip Noyce Gillian Armstrong Paul Cox Richard Franklin Fred Schepisi Brian Trenchard-Smith Tim Burstall and... George Miller. So, yeah, we're a little country on the other side of the world but the film industry in Australia was very far from 'dead' in the '70s! Anyone interested in this era of film making, particularly the guerrilla-style crazy stunt action of 'Mad Max' should check out the brilliant documentary: 'Not Quite Hollywood - The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation'. Love the show, been here since Episode 1. Despite the above 'slip', it was cool hearing your perspective on Mad Max, although I'll never get used to 2 being called The Road Warrior!

I'm not saying he's a great guy or anything, but has anyone else noticed that Immortan Joe is kind of a genius in terms of building civil infrastructure and local economy? I mean the guy has an abundance of fresh water pumped from underground, a successful green produce farming operation, a dairy business, an entire elevated garage complex, a high security vehicle recycling and tune-up center staffed by highly skilled mechanics, free hospice care facilities for his ailing warboys, a church for V8 worship, an educational system for his **ahem** wives, a viable trading system with neighboring settlements (Bullet Farm and Gastown) with patrolled and well maintained roadways between them, etc... He is straight up the most competent Mad Max (or any post-apocalyptic world) warlord ever. Barter town's got nuthin on the citadel, with its 'methane' based economy. How must it smell? Toe Cutter and Lord Humongous were basic nomadic raiders. No skills at sustainable living. Immortan Joe had an elaborate vision, and made it happen. Granted he's running a very strict caste system, clearly favoring the warrior class (not unlike ancient Japan), but he also actually seems to be providing shelter and water for the needy, albeit in a limited fashion. Literally a trickle down economy. Yes, he is a BAD GUY. No doubt. Rapist brainwasher murderer robberbaron. But man, look what he built. George Miller certainly has something to say about the nature of leadership. Perhaps capitalism in general. There is actually a thematic intersection with EXPANSE philosophy here; because the books do spend more than a few pages debunking the "great man" theory of history. Winston Duarte is just another Immortan Joe with an updated PR department. Marco Inaros is definitely more in the Toecutter/Humongous camp. Crap with infrastructure and sustainability.

All part of a more mature way of looking at the world! I believe Ty has mentioned that they intentionally created their universe in shades of grey rather than black and white, because it's more realistic. And, I can't tell you how many *ssholes I know who can also be good people. Immortan Joe is a great example of that dichotomy. I love that people have the balls to create those nuanced characters!
@robertcavanna789
@robertcavanna789 Жыл бұрын
@@monicafelstead3260 100%. Certainly know folks like that. Painting intricately in grey is what makes modern day storytelling so much more honest and compelling than the basic stuff we grew up with. Nowadays we get the likes of Walter White, and Joel, and Amos. And we're here for them. I love the *attitude* - the perspective of the Expanse series. Its whole general philosophical approach to character building. Filip Inaros might be one of my favorite examples. Perpetrated atrocity of a magnitude almost impossible to fathom. And yet, there are moments when we genuinely pity him. No pity for Immortan Joe, tho. lol. There's enough bastard in him. But i hope i've shown above that he is actually quite complex in terms of his capabilities. More than just a crazy scary skull mask wearing psycho. I imagine he's like a former monster truck rally champion who found his true calling in the end of the world. Like a post-apocalyptic Caesar. Genius of Bastardom.
