In this tutorial I talk about the guitar sounds in Mad Max Fury Road. Forever connected to the Doof. I talk about the actual guitars I used, the petals, and amps. Plus how I used multiple layers of guitars with the help of Cubase. I also share the actual guitar play up close. Enjoy!

Right when I heard the huge, sludgy guitar riffs in this soundtrack, I immediately thought of those stoner sludge rock bands, stuff like Neurosis, QOTSA, Kyuss, Audioslave, Soundgarden, Tool, Melvins, Mastadon. This soundtrack is easily just as heavy as any of those bands, and I love it. Its also cool to see that Tom knows how those guys record those huge guitars: tuning your guitar to Drop C or lower, getting a nice big tube amp and setting it to 11, and then getting a nice overdrive and a nice boost pedal to push the amp even harder. Extra points for using an SG and Les Paul.

Mad Max Fury Road was actually a heavy metal album that was transformed into a movie.

I'm not usually a big fan of bombastic scores, but the "Fury Road" score was absolutely brilliant and 100% appropriate. I love how he took a handful of very simple melodies and did tons of variations on them in many styles - everything from an ominous, electronic John Carpenter style to hard metal Brad Feidel action style.

I like his modesty. Guitar players can be incredibly judgemental of others and I'm sure many d-bags would laugh at his technique. But this sound and technique are PERFECT for what they are for. These are spray-paint huffing lunatics and the sloppy, huge and mean sounding riffs make complete sense. If there was some dude with perfect technique doing insane metal scales up there I wouldn't buy it. Just me. (And to be clear I don't think he's a bad player at all.. He sounds like me which I'm big enough to admit that's not saying much hah. But of course he has a job making music for awesome movies so that says a lot)

I'm just blown away. The level of talent and progression Junkie XL has gone through over the years. I remember 17 years ago buying the Blade soundtrack. Exactly. Because of all the stupid boring action films of the last decades, I stopped going to them at the cinema since I last loved them, which was when I was 15 or so. I just woke up one day and realized the enormous bore of it all. Then this film comes along and changes my entire outlook again. Although any other new and old action film I've since then seen, has utterly bored me again.
