My departed mother, God rest her soul, talk for 38 years in the public schools in Chicago. She drove it home to me that your job your employment should be enjoyable, but it should never be who you are. The reason you work is to give yourself the resources to be whomever you want to be. Your messages is clear and true. Do not get caught up in the money chase. And when the anxiety hits just remember that passage about sparrows in Matthew chapter 10. I have never had a bad thing happened to me where I did not end up better off, and that has taught me to trust in God and myself. This is a very nice uplifting video.

I also learned that lesson after 4 decades. Turns out I should have left 20 yrs before when I seen the hand righting on the wall. I spread what I learned to one of my sons. 2 mos after he left, the old company closed the whole building down. When any business starts cut backs LEAVE! CEO’s are just over paid bean counters. They don’t care about the long term of a company. Only person that cares about you is yourself.

I've always been an entrepreneur. I could never work for anyone else. I wouldn't resort to working for a company unless I was starving to death. Yes, I could always fail. But I have more confidence in myself than in someone else's company. That's the way I think of it.

Glad it's working out for you. I retired at 62 because i was fortunate to work for a global company that still had pensions and continuing healthcare. I spent too much time at work for 40+ years. What I'll say to those considering retiring early is get your ducks in a row and very thoughtfully consider your future.

Excellent video Ed. I’m 66, still in debt, but I am going to retire in May. Between Social Security and the little bit we were able to save after raising two kids and putting them through college, somehow my wife and I will make it work. I am a machinist, and my dream is to make farm parts for farmers that have legacy equipment that can’t get parts, or don’t have the money to make the repair. I’m hoping that I can somehow contribute to them as a thanks for feeding all of us.

Ed.....thanks for your perspective, I totally agree. After spending 40 years in corporate America with the same company, I could feel things were changing and the commitment was no longer a two way thing. Before making any kind of a decision to leave, I made an appointment with my financial advisor for another opinion. During the meeting he asked if " I got up each morning jumping at the joy to go to work", needless to say the answer was no...especially with some of the recent changes. So he said "what is your question"? I said, so can I financially afford to leave"...his comment was ABSOLUTELY!!!! That was 18 yrs ago and I have had a good life experience since. As one ages your health becomes your number ONE concern, as it certainly declines with age. If you do not have good health...YOU HAVE NOTHING, THE REST DOES NOT MATTER!!!!! Thanks Ed, just a prospective from an old retired guy with some health challenges, but thanks the Lord for each and every day that I can enjoy his beautiful creations from the farm. God bless, Bob

How's she goin'? What you are saying is not bad advice, but I'd like to add this. When you are young and start working, be aware that one day you will be old and will want to retire and chase your dreams. So take that and make plans for you to end your 'paid working days' when you want to, not when some uncaring employer wants. To decode that last sentence, make plans for retiring from the very moment you start your working career. I was able to retire at 55 and it was the 2nd best decision I ever made!! Great chat Ed. Take 'er easy!!

Great video. I will be retiring from my job of 31 years in about 4 months. I will be 56. I am fortunate to be in a profession that allows me to do this. Scary thought after doing nothing but this for that long. My pension is based on my two highest consecutive years salary so I have worked a TON of overtime hours (about 400+ each year) the past two years to pump up my numbers. Hoping to not have to take on a part time job to make ends meet but the way things are going with cost of living, that may not be in the cards. We will see.

Well said Ed! The root of all evil, to me, is the money. I would have retired earlier as well, but from a financial point of view it would have been foolish. I had to get 30 yrs in or my pension would have been drastically reduced. Am I happier now with the increased pension?? I don’t know. Maybe greed on my behalf. When I first started work out of school, I was told I was just a number. I tried not to be “just a number” thru different jobs and professions. Turns out I failed, because when I look back, I was still just another employee number, no matter how hard I tried doing a “good job”. My neighbor is very wealthy, and I tell you what…He can have is Empire of Dirt. So, I agree with your comments and gladly provide lots of thumbs up. 👍👍👍

Ed, I have a different approach if you sense the walkout coming make another plan take the separation money and run . My plan was to be out before 60 and was blessed to achieve that goal. Was not able to get the separation money but I had a goal to be out. Companies will not share your loyalty beliefs. Take the money and run.
@MyClutteredGarageАй бұрын

I have friends this has happen to and have seen this over and over. Some friends were let go after 20+ years. My father was let go 1 year before retirement. It's sad and I agree, that you need to make your own success. The loyalty does not go both ways especially if the company is public. Private held companies seem to be more loyal to their employees. Good topic.

We knew in our 20’s that we wanted a different lifestyle but didn’t know how or where. Fast forward 25 years and with our noses to the grindstone we were able to retire at 52 and buy our dream homestead. We never felt deprived while working but lived modestly well below our income levels and paid our bills on time. Today, we could afford new cars if we wanted, but still drive 20+ year old Honda CRV’s with 250k miles. You choose your lifestyle wisely and life is much simpler.

I left NJ 20 years ago and moved to NC. Back then, my property tax had reached $10k/year and I realized that if I ever wanted to be able to send my 2 kids to college without them taking on soul-crushing debt, I had to get out from under NJ's huge property tax burden. NC isn't exactly cheap, but it's way less than NJ's property tax. Life is truly short. It's critical to decide what's really important to you and pursue it now. Tomorrow isn't guaranteed to any of us. I retired 3 years ago at 57 after a 35-year career in IT. The last 15 years were brutal from a stress/pressure standpoint. Add to the stress of the job the nonsense DEI rubbish that was forced onto me for the last 2 or 3 years of being on the job, and I fully believe that if I had stayed, I'd be dead by now. Homesteading and Elderberry farming is the hardest work my wife and I have ever taken on - but we are happier now than we've been in years. Take care and God Bless.
