Scenes from the Mad River under the Blue Lake bridge where there is a deep hole. Several atmospheric river weather fronts dropped several inches of rain on the North Coast making steelhead fishing a long waiting game. The Mad muddies up quick and takes a few days to clear. In January, the Mad went over monitor stage at 15 feet. The river tends to fish the best under 8 feet.

The annual NCGASA Mad River Steelhead Derby occurs during the winter steelhead run, usually from January to the end of February. Anglers register, submit entries by photographing their hatchery catches on a provided metal ruler. Top three measured and photographed fish win cash in the Adult Division and the top three fish in the Youth Division win gift cards and tackle. The Derby sells raffle tickets for $20 for anyone to try to WIN guided ocean, bay and river fishing trips donated by the NorCal Guides on the website: madriversteelh...
