This is my third time watching this video. I just picked up a cello less than two weeks ago, and my goal is to learn this song(first one on cello) before my second lesson coming up this Thursday. I played guitar for 20 years and I developed 7 years of bad habits before my first guitar lesson. I was so stubborn and stuck in my ways that it eventually led to me losing the spark I started with. But with cello, it’s different.

I'd be very interested to see how you are playing 9 months on... If you are having lessons personally I'd stick to your lesson material and include some improv. Rather than trying to copy KZbin materials after 1 lesson. You say you picked up bad habits with the guitar and it's the perfect place to pick up bad habits with the Cello. please do give an update on your progress

I love this song and I love your tutorials and cello skills!! You make everything look so effortless and free!! I aspire to be half as good as you one day! Been teaching myself this song using this tutorial and it's rather ambitious of me cause I have only been playing and learning for a about a week(a little over a week) and already got the notes down and memorized, even getting a lot better at the 4th and 1st position shifts. To the point I just about nail them each time(still sometimes have to correct fingers or repeat shifts to make sure It becomes a reflex) but am learning it at a impressive pace for only playing for around a week. I know this is lengthy and may not be read but I wanted to say thank you!!! And if you have any more begginer level tutorials, I would love to learn more from you.

Wow I am so happy to hear this ! I always try to explain it in the easiest way possible so even people who cant really read sheet will be able to follow up. That's why I try to name the fingers and notes together. Although I know it's not the proper way, kids should learn to read sheet but yeah I just try to be inclusive. Thanks for this great video! I'm a music teacher, but I'm a beginner at cello. I had a lot of fun with your video. You're a great teacher. I was a little confused by the key, though. You said it was A minor, but because of the F#, I think it's actually modal, so it's A Dorian (key signature of G major, but tonal center is the second scale degree, A, so dorian mode.)

So I just bought this electric cello and it has 5 strings and I was trying to get it tuned CGDAE. But then I click on this one and I’m trying to follow along and it’s not sounding right. So then I try FCGDA and it’s sounding right and seems to be right by the looks of my finger position... but the string tension seems pretty high and sure enough I break the high string trying to get it up to A. So I’m on my way to the shop right now to buy new strings but I’m still confused as to where I went wrong. I’m going to just tune it like I did the first time and hopefully I can get it figured out.

Okay, so I got my new strings and I tuned it up again. I’m definitely tuned an octave lower than you are as well as where my tuner says I should be. The C string is so low and muddy that my ear can barely register a tone. But the tension overall seems okay. I’m not going try again to tune it a whole octave higher and break these expensive strings again... what am I doing wrong? Please help!

Alright, so I tuned it up the whole octave and everything is better now. Maybe the strings that were on it were weak from the weather and traveling across the world? The tension feels very high but I guess that’s normal (can’t do any guitar-style vibrato and I need to lower my action because it’s very difficult to fret a note now
