Will never forget: I was on the way to Logan airport- must have been like 10 years old. I'm in the back of the airport shuttle listening to this song on my ipod classic. I don’t think Donnie Darko would have felt “complete” without Gary Jules’ Mad World. The way that this song compliments the end of the movie is what I think adds that last piece of puzzle to the picture. It also arguably helps you understand what the ending of that movie really means too.

When I first saw this, I must have been 7 or 8 years old, I had already heard the song, naturally, but never watched the video before. It filled me with a new emotion, one I had never felt before, nor had the vocabulary to articulate, I was entranced by this grey American cityscape bathing in the beautiful sunset sun, Michael Andrews forlornly accompanying it with his piano; it looked like a place I could only catch a faint glimpse of in my dreams, or out of the corner of my eye, while staring out the window in class. In the years since it has bedeviled my imagination and inspired my art, the feeling the sunset gave me never leaving me. Today I found out to my dismay my own grey Arcadia was actually just Hoboken, NJ. Damn you Michel Gondry.

This is a stunningly beautiful, brilliant and heart-breaking song. Its lyrics, sung ever so softly, evoke a sense of both great vulnerability and terrifying honesty in expressing a broken soul's sense of journeying through life across a broken world. If this song doesn't make you feel, you're incapable it!

My wife left me a few weeks ago and moved back to the states. This was one of her favourite songs, it was mine too when I was younger. It was one of the many things we bonded over when we first started talking and now it's something I listen to now I can't hear her beautiful voice anymore. I took her for granted and came home from work to find her gone one night. She's the most beautiful soul I've ever met and I've lost the most important part of me. I never deserved someone so precious, but she gave herself to me for the time that she did and I had the best part of my life with her. The absence of her smile makes my life a dull tone of grey and I'll never be the same without her. The world doesn't know how much it needs that girl. I love you so much sweetheart, show them what you're worth.

I'm Dave and I'm 67. I've found that once broken, relationships just can't be fixed. There is no way to return to how things were in the past. It's tough. You won't get over it. But there's nothing you can do.
@oliver.n2787 ай бұрын
I know how you feel, experienced the same. 7 years passed now, I still rememember her. "Go get her back" does not work if one person just decided otherwise. I agree to Dave, once something is broken you cant fix it as hard as it sounds. Life often is about moving on and I wish you the best to happen in future!

I'd heard this song a lot as, y'know, a meme song for melodramatic situations. I always loved it. I watched Donnie Darko for the first time a couple of months ago, not knowing that this version of Mad World was recorded for that film. It hit SO different at the end of the movie. You and Michael Andrews did something really special with this song.

the original video from over 13 years ago is actually gone, such sadness :( I lost my mother in January 2024, life seems meaningless, and now its just me and my father trying to value everything about my future now when I turn 19 which is why I am glad that this copy was saved as mad world is just such a beautiful song by you Gary Jules! its honestly the song that has helped us in tough times and upon our troubles to find the reflections within ourselves that even if there isn't a meaning that life must keep going and so we even if it ends as nothing. thank you for this memory and childhood nostalgia, such a timeless masterpiece and so I hope everyone stays strong and to a more meaningful future I hope to see you all there ciao!

@@GaryJulesOfficial@BlitzWizard94 I can totally relate! I kept going back and forth to that video and today I saw it was deleted and I was super confused because I really liked the video (I knew I could listen to the song through other means). Little did I know it'd be re-uploaded by the official Gary Jules channel! I remember when old video was a year old (when I found out about the song).. different times. Coming back to it reminds me of those times and I get nostalgic. Thanks for the amazing song!

I remember hearing this song when I was 9 years old and being mesmerized by the beautiful piano playing. I learned it when I was 10 and was so happy when I could play it! I have such good memories of learning this and playing it for my parents in the living room on our upright piano, that was 8 years ago. That house and that piano are gone, but the memories will never die
