Funny, I absolutely love it, and you're the one who got me into skincare in May 2022. You have no idea how much you've helped this 40 year old male, who spent years in the sun, tanning for bodybuilding, and harsh soap on my face. It's ironic how you great you are practicing what you preach..... to stay with what works for our individual needs. So even though our Tretinoin experiences are opposites, I owe all the sun damage and anti aging results and taking care of my skin, building confidence mostly all to you! Hope that all made sense how I hoped. Love from the US

I live in Italy. I tried to get my dermatologist to prescribe tretinoin for me, but she told me that they don't prescribe it here. It exists, but dermatologists don't prescribe it for aging skin (I don't know about acne problems). So, since I can't get Curology or anything like it here, I tried Dr. Sam's granactive retinal products (and her cleansing gel which doesn't bother my eyes, unlike most other products) plus various serums from Timeless and Maelove. I am quite pleased with this routine. I will try your serum and antioxidant cream when I finish the other products. Every time I go to the States, I stock up on these various sera , but it is a relief to have products that I can get here (Dr. Sam's and yours) so I don't have to be so dependent on international travel. I am wondering why you can't get Timeless Vitamin 20% with Ferulic acid anymore in the UK. Have you ever tried it? What did you think of it>?

@@captainofmysoul6162 UPDATE: I’ve been using daily since January 2023 and I have noticed a quicker cell turnover like a light exfoliating and smoother lines on forehead and mouth. I’d say after the first month I had a little dryness around my mouth ( your not supposed to use it around lips for the dryness reasons but I’m looking to get rid of my lip lines!! ) but it wasn’t a bad “peeling” or anything a little moisturizer couldn’t take care of. I just feel like I will continue to use it daily in the future. I also layer other things or top with no issues. 1 1/2 oz lasts 3 months since you only need a large pea size. Try it for 3 months it can’t hurt! 👍🏻

I’m with you Rob! A lot of back and forth with tret for me. Finally got tired of my skin looking worse and everyone telling me I must use it, I must go back to it, etc. Nope. I know my skin now. Not going back to it. My skin is much happier and I can tolerate a high amount of retinal well and my skin is looking so much better. Better yet, I can use it daily because I can tolerate it and I can use vitamin C daily and azelaic acid daily and it’s all been a-ok. In fact my skin is looking great!

My tret journey has def been rocky! After 4 yrs I’ve learned 1- I can’t use it every day. 2- I need to take breaks in the winter if my skin gets too irritated and 3- not being able to get to .1% is ok!! I’ve been at .035% for a couple years and that seems to be the max my skin can handle while still remaining consistent with it.

I've been using tretinoin 0.05 for about 8 months now. I began once a week and tried working myself up. But the rule I go by is: when my skin starts peeling or feeling irritated I stop until my skin is normal again. So sometimes I don't use tret for 5 days. I cannot use it every night or every other night, thats too much... My rule works perfectly. Every evening when I do skin care I look at my skin and decide whether its okay to put on tret today or not, considering that effects of usage come a couple of days later. I can feel that my skin is slowly adjusting, but is very rarely irritated, and only for a day. Tret helped me with the dry/oily skin on my cheeks. I wake up and my skin feels healthy. It also made my skin smoother. I got complimented for my skin at class reunion, so thats great! I think people should be a lot more patient when using tret and always make breaks when irritated, until it feels safe to put it on again.

I'm that annoying person who has very few side effects with tretinoin. I use 0.05% tret and I only get a few days of peeling if I come back to it after a break (but my skin is pretty resilient) I generally use it 2x/week and supplement with retinal 1-2x/week. Honestly, I like it. I feel like it gives a different quality on the skin. At the same time, I only got my mum on retinoids (retinal 0.1%) a year ago and her skin is glowing even at 65. Which is to say, tret is great to use if your skin can tolerate it and it doesn't heavily impact your life. But honestly it's not necessary and you shouldn't let it impact your life long-term.

I perfectly understand Rob, when I started tret (November 2020) I took the slowest possible route (1st month once a week, 2nd month twice and so on) and yet I've been stuck at 2 sometimes 3 times a week application for months, my skin simply couldn't adjust to it, it was always sensitive, during the first months any moisturizer or even water would irritate me, the skin was peeling (not much but still), and looked awful with makeup. Then around the one year mark (nov 2021), things were finally starting to get better so I'd decided to step it up and use it every other night at first and then I tried nightly, and everything went great until one day I had to stop using it for one whole week. Well I couldn't believe it but that seemingly short pause made all the difference: I was almost back to square one with the irritation and sensitivity 😭😭 I don't know why but I had to start it all over so around spring 2022 my skin was still sensitive and always slightly peeling during the day. A few months after that so last summer, I was able to go back to nightly application (idk maybe the extremely hot and damp Italian summer weather helped my skin), and it's been like that ever since, now I manage to use it every night and am so happy with it, I still get a little bit of sensitivity during the colder days in winter but it's extremely manageable thanks to my bff Cicaplast😂. So for me it's been a much much longer journey than those I see on the internet (I laugh when I see dermatologists say "the irritation will last up to 6 weeks" 😂😂😂), with many ups and downs, and many times I thought about giving up, that my skin was simply too sensitive and would never adjust to tret but in the end it's been worth it😊

I also started using tretinoin watching all the different derms and skinfluencers talk about it online. Right now I'm using a "custom" blend from Dermatica for 0.015% and so far I'm surprised how little side effects I've had. I also was using an agency "custom" blend for 0.009% for like 2 months or so before I started using the Dermatica one. I do plan on moving up to 0.025% after the dermatica one is done- but it has been very eye opening to see the different skinfluencers in this space that have said tretinoin doesn't work for them so it's just a reminder that skin really is super individual.

Hi Rob I started retinoids eight or nine years ago and worked up to tretinoin. I used it successfully for over a year and did see results. However around that time I was in the final stage of perimenopause and my rosacea worsened dramatically. I just wasn’t tolerating the tret any more and had to stop using it. I moved down to retinaldehyde for a while, but even that was causing issues. I gave up on it for over a year whilst my rosacea was at its peak and have slowly started incorporating the retinaldehyde again. I’m going slow but it seems to be doing better again. Tretinoin did give me great results when my skin could tolerate it, but it isn’t right for everyone and my skin stopped being able to handle it. I would rather have aging than sore skin tbh. Best wishes x

I have oily but sensitive skin. I started tretinoin at .025 5 years ago. I have moved up slowly. I'm finally at .1. My skin looks better than it has in a long time. I never had any irritation but I went low and slow for a long time. When I started, I used it twice a week for month and moved up a day monthly. Really low and slow. I didn't actually start using it everyday until 2 years in. I let my skin dictate how often I used it. It's working for me, but I can certainly understand how it may not work for others.

I didn't start really using skin care regularly until I noticed my skin losing elasticity and getting dull after turning 65. I was concerned about tret side effects so I started super low at compounded 0.01% tret from curology. Over two years I gradually increased to 0.1% plus 15% azelaic acid (I started with 5% niacinamide combo.). When I got to tret 0.05% I switched to Dermatica because I liked it's base better. The old LRP cicaplast helped me through the side effects which lasted 6+months. If retinal were more popular 4 years ago, I might have tried that. At this point I use tret 0.1%/15% azelaic acid 5 or 6 times a week without irritation. My skin feels and looks the way it did in my 30s. I will stick with what tret indefinitely. If one has had acne as a teen to their 30's and took tret for that, perhaps it makes sense to stay on tret straight through to old age. I don't recommend that friends in their 30s need to start their retinoid journey with tret. Had I started skincare in my 30s, I think retinal makes more sense. But with my late start, I am happy I found tret and will use it indefinitely! Worked much better after I added azelaic acid!

I’ve taken two rounds of antibiotics to clear it. I would try Tret again, and break out with a rash. Everything that I could use before in my 30’s and 40’s I can no longer tolerate. No more heavy creams, and certain spf’s. I will be trying other treatments in the future:)

I started using tretinoin about six months ago and I have really sensitive skin as it is also dry.. and honestly it made it worse I tried to cut down and use it every second night still bad. I then put it down to every third night still bad.. so I just decided to stop now because my make-up was looking shocking because how can I look good with peeling skin…. and even after a month of not using it my skin is already looking better.. .. But when i try salycilic acid serum, hydrating serum, moisturizer as nighttime routine ; mornings: vit c serum, light hydrating gel & sunscreen … my skin shows huuuuuuuge improvement & never has ever been this clear & plumping 🤩🥰 so i use them for almost a year & will stick to it

Im 50. Have no wrinkles. I believe thats due to acne and large pores my whole life. I started Tretenoin six weeks ago every day affer high quality Retinals and havent once had irritated or peeling skin. Week six i got three small breakouts which could be purging, but also could be from my period. My skin has never been smoother or with more glow. I am sure its due to other products as well as the Tret. I tried Tret when i was a teen and felt i was allergic to it. My skin burned off. Now i wake up with moist skin. I think using milky toners before it and moisterizer when i can remember that before falling asleep really help. I never want to go without Tret again. I look better now than at 20.

I’ve been tempted to stop using it too. I’ve been on it for about 6 months and I can’t get over the dryness and irritation either. Sometimes my skin looks so aged because it gets so dehydrated. I tried using it less and it helps a little but as soon as I try to bump it up I just turn into a flakey mess again. At like 3x a week I can do okay on it, but I’m not blown away by the results. The main thing is it probably has even out my skin tone and that’s it. Still have eye wrinkles lol. I was on a really nice retinol before and my skin felt really healthy and young (I’m 35). I keep thinking about just going back to my fancy retinol and vitamin c serum. Not sure if I should stick it out for a few more months or give up.

@tessagray6265
@tessagray6265 Жыл бұрын
@@owenalden742 yeah I started tret in July 2022 and have been on and off tret ever since because of some side effects. first, it increased cell turnover, so I noticed peeling of the skin, but many people have said they suffer from dry skjn, I wouldn't necessarily call what I have dry skin, but simply shedding of skin which can have the look of dry skin perhaps ebcause eof dead skin cells, but it renews pretty fast. some people have said that this is something That only occurs at the beginning but I find it to be a continuous thing which isn't really bad in my eyes. I also noticed many clogged pores that were like that for a long time (like stubborn blackhead) started to come to the surface more. then the inflammation phase started where more and more pores where getting inflamed, and I got acne. i would say the increaa in acne was the worst thing I experienced because it brought up a lot of past trauma and I hadn't suffered acne for many years, only clogged pores, but that made me sad. I also started getting some weird cysitic pimple that would take months to go away. I got red scars from that and the red scars are soe extremely difficult to treat with tret. it is strange too because my skin barries wasn't irritated it was just that the acne got more red. I used to get hyperpigmentslation scars from acne a lot of those faded very well with tret but the new acne left red marks which was new for me and also more difficult to treat. I stopped using tret for some time and that made it better. I'm still not sure what to do with tret because it helped so much with pigmented scars but also the healing of new scars, except the redness and increase of acne. so it is difficult. if you get acne from tret immediately stop. you do not want to risk popping and scratching new pimples and getting new atrophic scars, just stop until everything comes down then continue. it will be a long process. tret works immediately but can also take time before the symptoms occur. using it is kind of accumulative.

I could use tret, but if I tried to use any other active, it would irritate me every time. Even if I spaced them apart, like use tret one day, take a rest day, then on the third use an active, my skin would be irritated on the fourth. I originally got on tret to help with my severe acne alongside some other medications my doctor prescribed, and it did work initially. About a year after I started using it I started to have breakouts again. They weren't too bad, but I couldn't get rid of them. Turns out tret wasn't strong enough to hold my breakouts at bay by itself, but too irritating to use alongside anything else besides oral medication, that I didn't really want to go back to the derm to get again. (Not to mention it was antibiotics, so I couldn't stay on them long term anyways.) So I went down to adapalene so I could use other actives again, and my skin cleared. I'm currently trying out Retinal, and it's working really well too. I'm not sure which I like better now, but tret definitely isn't for everyone.

One of the most annoying things on the skincare community is that dogmatic way of thinking. When there is something that works amazingly well on a skin concern everybody imediatly starts to say that all people with that skin concern should be using it. But it dosen't work like that. I also love Vitamin C and use Paula's Choice Resist antioxidant serum each morning and Medicube 14% Vit C serum once a week in the am. Also try to use glycolic acid once a week and skip the tret that night. I find I have pretty flawless skin at 56 using just these products (plus sunblock). I have papulopustular rosacea and severely dry sensitive skin and I’ve been using it for 2 years. And I never purged nor did I have to buffer it. I use it 6 days a week. However when I first starting using it ,I did only 3 days and gradually increased. Hope this helps anyone.

Then ,like you , I did a bunch of research and thought ok let’s try this again , nice and slow. Still had peeling and redness , so I started with the sandwich between moisturizers. If I try to use it more then 3 times a week it’s a no go . If I try even once to use it alone it’s a no go . So I’ve accepted this program . I’m already doing C and a bunch of serums. And I’m using a retinol on the non tret days .

I always followed the instructions on the box which is to apply onto dry skin 20 mins after cleansing UNTIL I watched a KZbinr (who did the same) who swapped it to her last step and got amazing results. I now put it as last step before moisturiser and I very rarely get irritation. Mind you I only use 0.025% which I believe is effective in anti aging. On another note I found a supplier of Medik8 here but won’t be getting the peptide serum at £65 😮 but was surprised to see the Retinal products at around £25 which is the same as G&G here.

I don’t think you should use this every single time you use retin a if you’re using retin a every night, BUT if you’re using it 1-3 days out of the week , using a steroid for inflammation here and there should be fine. My skin doesn’t wake up red or inflamed in the morning AND my skin looks so much smother and softer then it usually does. Inflammation is actually messing with your end result, you’re still getting some benefits but the inflammation is taking some away too.

But over the last 10 to 15 years, there has definitely been what feels like a type of brainwashing about retinol‘s… I even tried using the most gentle concentration, And it was still counterproductive to my skin care goals. I noticed thinning and delicacy forming where I had none before. I wasn’t particularly flaky or red, but just a general all over dry lackluster feeling. I gave it up all together and I was tired of coming across videos or skin care shops where it was and everything.… Again, thank you so much, because it is definitely feeling like you’re not in the club when you don’t use it! I did really well on adapalene for three years for my acne, until I started Strattera for my ADHD. My hormones went HAYWIRE and I broke out horribly all over my cheeks. The lower dose of Adapalene available over the counter here in America just wasn't strong enough anymore. I had a derm appointment anyways for my skin cancer follow up, and he put me on the lowest dose of tretinoin. I was supposed to ease into it, starting with once every three nights, but I tolerated it so well the first night that I used it again the second night and really had no issues. Towards evening, I do get some peeling in my philtrum, so I try not to apply it there. It's REALLY helping my acne, but so far I don't see a noticeable anti-aging difference over Adapalene.

You seem so knowledgeable..and I have a question. Is it better to use vitamin C or tret for melasma that is predominantly on sides of face and jaw.

You may want to inquire about Trifarotene. It's a 4th gen Rx retinoid that's supposed to have the same or slightly better efficacy as tretinoin. But the irritation is drastically reduced. It's fairly new. Only been on the market a few years. But it's rather expensive from what I've seen.

Did you ever try Aklief? I was on Trentino in for a while and saw mild improvement in my acne but it kept coming back. I’ve only been using Aklief for a couple of months but so far I have none of the irritation I had with tret and even better results! It’s early days obviously but so far I’m really impressed! I know it’s much more expensive but my health benefits here in Canada happen to cover the cost

Vitamin a is good but you need to be careful as it damages your liver. At first when you use it makes your skin very sensitive and you can not get facial waxing when using it. I was on it and got my eyebrows waxed and it pulled off the skin on my eyebrows.
Should you even use tretinoin? A scientific breakdown
