Do you think local communities should have a more important say in defining what "progress" is? How could they become more involved?

We need to support these people and let them decide what they want to develop within their communities. Tribes of people like this, have all of the answers to the problems of civilization. We need to realize that we are the problems of the earth, and they are the only ones who live as intended. Communication is everything, if we can look up and listen to people like this and stop trying to assimilate these beautiful people

What the man speaking in french said all along till the end of the documentary fully translates the worth of people like us Malagasy. We could only feel poor from losing our traditions, and being denied in the pride of embracing our own identity. Just as that same man said, poverty is a state of mind. By the moment you assume you are dealing with poor people, you can't help but feel like you're the only one that could bring something to them and no possible reverse. As a child of that red mudded land, let me tell you something : the people you are seeing through your screen actually have way less problems than you do on an everyday basis ; therefore, they know better about true human well-being, or, simply put, happiness. Their lives are way less prone to problems, because they always only have their survival to look after. And that ain't something disgracing nor distressful, but just rightfully balanced. Nobody's poor from what's enough, ancient greeks wouldn't have said otherwise. Yet, now, more than ever, these groups of people are frightened by extinction. Because the problems brung by "progress" or "development" are catching up on them, even tho they did not asked for anything.. There goes the injustice. I believe that what my elder man speaking in French during the video tried to explain is precisely that this idea of running after progress makes no proper sense for people like us Malagasy. Because we are absolutely driven by traditions, they are the roadmap of who we are, they precede the idea of progress in our existence as such. We experience who we are by completing rites the same way our ancestors did, repeating these immemorial gestures is the core of our conscience. What these Vezo and Mikea people need is to be given back their hereditary lands and set free from standardizing their original way of life. It's the "sine quo non" for the durability of their well-being, since they live in a both humbling and inspiring balance with their ecosystem, while having already acquired the wisdom of happiness...

From the golden calves of the Bible to the Egyptian Nut or Apis/Hapis bulls, the Cow of India and here, the Zebu, the connection to Idolatry is simple amazing in that they do nothing for the People other than their in vain imaginations.

Be thankful the original plan by natzi Germany was to relocate Jews of Germany to Madagascar prior to the war in 1938. The French where open to this as the had Jewish refugees of their own. After the outbreak of the war the British held the Suez canal and was impossible. Madagascar could be a much different place today. Maybe better maybe worse?
