I always assumed it was a sample from one of the well-known opera divas (that might be your mum for all I know!) First came across this as the intro to a wonderful Dior Couture show spring/summer 2007 and it has stuck with me ever since. It’s a beautiful reworking of a classic and she did a fantastic job.

eric rawson - If you haven't already found it, listen to "The Humming Chorus," also from Madame Butterfly. It plays while Cio-Cio San waits throughout the night for morning, when she believes the man she has waited for for years would return to her and their son. He does...to tell her he's 'really' married now, to a white girl...and to take their son away from Cio-Cio. It's such a beautiful and hopeful piece of music, all the more heartbreaking because while you're listening to it, you know the story already, and you know what she doesn't...what's really going to happen in the morning.

I used to listen and love this song when I was a little kid in the 80s. I didnt know get much of it, and didnt know the story. Afterwards, I am surprised the whole story is contained in the song. Benjamin Pinkerton entered into a "temporary marriage." But Maddam Butterfly never gave up faith he would return. When he did, she realized she didn't mean to him, what he meant to her. He married a "yankee girl."
