I always assumed it was a sample from one of the well-known opera divas (that might be your mum for all I know!) First came across this as the intro to a wonderful Dior Couture show spring/summer 2007 and it has stuck with me ever since. It’s a beautiful reworking of a classic and she did a fantastic job.

eric rawson - If you haven't already found it, listen to "The Humming Chorus," also from Madame Butterfly. It plays while Cio-Cio San waits throughout the night for morning, when she believes the man she has waited for for years would return to her and their son. He does...to tell her he's 'really' married now, to a white girl...and to take their son away from Cio-Cio. It's such a beautiful and hopeful piece of music, all the more heartbreaking because while you're listening to it, you know the story already, and you know what she doesn't...what's really going to happen in the morning.

The tragically beautiful and unstoppable qualities of Love are captured wonderfully in this song. The synthesis of modern-jazz -funk with a Puccini opera is musical genius. That there are certain songs that remain Untouched by cover bands and re-make,"artists" is because they were Created in that realm of Once In a Lifetime hits... 'Nuff Respect.

Hated by John Lydon, loved by Viviane Westwood, sold himself as a manipulator but he left us some of the most original songs of the early 80ies. Timeless as the entire decade, this majestic masterpiece never gets old. Malcolm, rest in peace. Seriously, is there anyone out there...to take up the reins and lead us beyond the bleak facade of this current period of history, into a new realm lead with a new paradigm, new politics, and overall new expectations over and above material and mere image? Need we accept or take what has been handed to us? Phones, for Christ sake!? Is that all that these kids will remember, and be remembered for?

Even now 35 years later such a brilliant piece of music, incredibly underrated at the time and most people now wouldn't know of it, malcolm mclaren was thought of as a bit of a charlatan and a wide boy, but by god he could produce some spot on music (see also double Dutch and buffalo gals!)

I used to listen and love this song when I was a little kid in the 80s. I didnt know get much of it, and didnt know the story. Afterwards, I am surprised the whole story is contained in the song. Benjamin Pinkerton entered into a "temporary marriage." But Maddam Butterfly never gave up faith he would return. When he did, she realized she didn't mean to him, what he meant to her. He married a "yankee girl."

Nothing sadder in the 1980's than this being played on the Juke box and an empty pub reflecting on Life.

a pure masterpiece that's sadly not played much as it should be due to its time scale on some stations but when it does it gets some fond replies to it being played

I was talking with a friend , when he shocks me and mentions this song. I flooded with emotion. And just talked about how it affected our lives , me gay man home straight but we had the same emotions. Yeh he’s a keeper in my life forever.
