Aside from a few minor historical inaccuracies I thought Wolf Hall was very good! Damien plays Henry like I've always imagined him to have been! Brilliant actors all of them!

@@middi6 @Frankie Goddard Tbh that series was more about entertainment than historical accuracy. Somebody called it the Tudor version of 'Dynasty' which is how it came across to me. I enjoyed both shows but 'Wolf Hall' is in a different league.

@@TheMymlan In the Tudors? Mostly convenience. So some historical figures are moulded together into one character, for example Henry had two sisters Mary and Margaret but only Margaret is shown in the Tudors and is his ‘only’ sister. It was thought too many Mary’s would spoil the broth so to speak. It’s stuff like that however. Not maliciously inaccurate, just the usual reasons.

I love this scene, just cause of how chilling it is. Henry goes from bouncing Elizabeth on his hip and calling her ‘poppet’ in earlier episode to staring at her and her mother with utter disdain and hatred. Contrast between them is stark, for all Anne Boleyn and Catherine of Aragon desperately wanted and needed a son, they loved their daughters unconditionally and treasured them. The King, however, sees no value in them and only loves them when they are useful to him.

The show really portrays Henry having a complete personality change after his jousting accident when he stopped breathing for a considerable amount of time. Before the accident he was tender and caring towards Anne and baby Elizabeth, then afterwards he recoiled from them. I wonder why Cromwell, Anne, or any of the other characters who were always around him, didn't speak up more about this complete 180 in personality.

Watched the series on PBS. From a social stand point, Anne, like most women at that time was the property of her father. The Boleyn's and Seymour's gained land, titles and power through successful alliances with their daughters and family. The Seymour's and the Boleyn's were ruthless and would easily watch their daughter's executed to save their own necks. It is probably unlikely Ann loved the king in a romantic way. He wanted her as his mistress. She would of been encouraged by her father. Being independent, strong willed and fiery she probably decided to go for marriage. Their courtship lasted 6 years before they married. She continued to be hot tempered and she could not provide a son. There is where her star fell. If she had a son she would of been safe, and probably tolerated by the king. Jane was considered as Henry's next mistress not wife. However, whether her true and sincere feelings, or at the suggestion of her brother, she refused his offerings, claiming her honor was more valuable that anything. Whether this was true for her, or the way to get the king to pursue her either by suggestion or her own belief one will never know. There was a statement from someone in the court after the king married Jane, that they had been delivered from hell into heaven. She was his favored wife because she had given him what he wanted, a son.

51Saffron From what I have read, Anne and Jane pursued the same path. But Jane did not go about antagonizing everyone and meddling in Henry's affairs--except for the Pilgrimage of Grace. A stern warning from Henry ended that.

Cromwell made Cromwell. If there was only one truly self made man at Henry's court, it would have been Cromwell. But Henry had an eye for brains and talent and he promoted people like More and Cromwell when he found them.

Just discovered this series, I thought it was great. Until my friend came over. He sat on the sofa and when he discovered that this wasn't a action movie he repeated all the lines as loud as he could with a overly thick cockney accent. Clearly wanting me to turn the tv off, I never wanted to choke someone out. But the temptation was getting real.

Damion lewis is actually a amazing casting choice for older Henry yes he’s a bit on the buff side and this script did no favors but if you gave he better writing and had him pack on weight he would be Oscar worthy

He certainly had the build and complexion to play Henry. With some padding l would like to see him play him in the later years. Yet his acting only displayed a small part of Henry's personality. Nobody in my book can beat the late Kieth Michel as Henry.

Anne boleyn is accurately depicted in the chequers ring, which you can see very clearly if you watch a video of it on display in the museum. Claire Foye, hopefully I spelled her name correctly, is a stunning cast of the real Anne Boleyn. I only wish she had worn dark contacts and then she would have been superb.

Ok, so here's what I don't get, and I've read both Mantel books more than once. It's obvious at this point that Anne's star is falling at this point. The king is irritable and impatient. She's nervous and making mistakes. Why the rush? She's no threat to Cromwell. It's hard to believe that he doesn't know this by now. It must be Henry that is the threat to him if Cromwell can't get him out of another unproductive marriage. And if that's the case, has Henry been using Anne as the fall guy all this time? Maybe Anne is not the one who brought Wolsey down. Maybe she just got the blame.

Remember, this was brought on by Henry wanting a son to succeed him. Henry would be in his mid-30's at this point. People would be considered old once they hit their 40's. Henry had been at the point of bringing war on England and breaking with Rome would give the Pope to declare open season on Henry. All of that would not had mattered if Anne gave him a son.Since she failed...Cromwell is not going to weep over her passing. Cromwell was loyal to Wolsey and is loyal to Henry.He does not see himself as loyal to Anne.

Reading about the Tudor court,I think it was a strike first or be taken down type thing. Wolsey knew King Henry was tired of Queen Katherine,but did nothing about. By the time he did try,it was too late. Cromwell saw the signs with Queen Anne&wasn't about to go down like Wolsey.

Kim Haas Henry liked Wolsey, but was frustrated that he failed him in releasing him from KOA. The way I see it, Cromwell needed to get rid of Anne because the king would not tolerate failure, as shown by his turning on Wolsey. Cromwell didn't like that Anne was at the center of Wolsey's problems, but it's clear that, unlike the men he contrived to be Anne's adulterous lovers, whom Cromwell got satisfaction in bringing down, Cromwell felt terribly guilty about manipulating Anne's cruel death. He avenged his beloved Wolsey by sending Wolsey's disrespectful ridiculers to their deaths -- even though they were officially executed for things they were not guilty of. But, to some extent, he admired Anne. She was Fearless and straightforward about what she wanted and her determination to get it. For a time, she made the king happy and when the king's happy, his Court is happy. Anne's cold nastiness often made Cromwell shudder with disgust, but he didn't dislike her. He felt for her and hated seeing her executed on false charges that he, himself, trumped up. Notice his face in the closing scene when he is joyfully embraced by Henry because Cromwell has gotten him his freedom. Cromwell is wholly uncomfortable.

Anne presented herself as Very Much a Threat to Cromwell! Recall she reminded him of how she felt that it was She who was responsible for Cromwell's rise to power, and that those exalted, can be Laid Low! Little did her Vindictive mind lead her to see how the Exact Same Outcome Applied to Herself as Well! She was actually Reminding Cromwell of her own responsibility for Wolsey's destruction and death. Cromwell would have been a Fool to continue to allow her Opportunities to Exact Vengeance upon him! Her having identified his Actions as "Betrayal" was His handwriting-On-The-Wall moment.

Natalie Dormer was good but The Tudors was silly and superficial. It relied too much on showing tits to keep it's target audience interested. Wolf Hall I thought was a masterpiece, and Claire Foy was perfect.

Exactly Philip. I like Natalie Dormer, but she was not Anne at all, didn't look right, sound right, dress right (I realise the last thing isn't her fault). Claire Foy did an incredible job and was much more accurate. The finest Boleyn however will always be Genevieve Bujold.

I do believe Natalie's portrayal was much more acurrate. Her Anne has many different sides, especially in season 2 when Natalie was given more of a say in the way her character was presented. We see her ambition, but also her devotion to the religious reform, her love for her daugther, for Henry and her brother, her lust for power, her hate of Catherine and Mary, her growing desesperation as she fails to give Henry a son, her fear.... Foy has the right looks but she portrays Anne as a single minded villain.

MadamCameron You misunderstood what I meant by "adulterous affair." For Christians, and certainly for that time, to enter a marriage with a man who divorced his wife (for anything but infidelity) is to commit adultery. This was understood by the populous then and certainly the Catholic Church.

Marriages were only annulled on the grounds of them not being consummated. Henry VIII was wrong and clearly was looking for an excuse with Leviticus 20:21, which didn't apply. Clearly it was consummated since they have a child. He had to strong-arm all of these divorces, anullments, etc. for a reason. Everyone in court would have known what was going on, especially Anne. I never implied she deserved to die, but I do not believe in distorting the truth. Strange that you consider these divorces and annullments valid as an entire country went to war with itself partly because of them.

Marriages in Protestant England were never because of non-consummation. There is no record of that, right up to the present day. They could be annulled because of impotence, but the man had to prove his inability by being tested by the court. Non consummation was a possibility in the Catholic church, but it was much more likely, and easier to achieve, by using consanguinity (the husband or the wife having had sexual relations with someone close to their current spouse). Both Henry's first two marriages were annulled because of consanguinity. Henry cited two separate passages, both in the Old Testament, to justify first his marriage to Katharine of Aragon, then to justify the annulment. He cited the same one with Anne Boleyn, when he had their marriage annulled the day before her execution.

Anne Boleyn was most definitely a Catholic, as was the King. England didn't become Protestant until the reign of Edward VI. Look it up. On the day of her death Anne made her confession and heard Mass. She was more inclined to making the final break than Henry but she never did. What Henry did was break with Rome but he never became a Protestant. He looked for reform within the church, but outside it. He expected to be reconciled with Rome, as had happened before, notably with King John. He executed Protestants for heresy and he listened to Mass every day of his life. And the grounds of the annulment with Katharine of Aragon and the divorce with Anne, which came through the day before her death were not non consummation, but consanguinity. An annulment on those grounds depended on a full union taking place, ie the couple must have had sex. But the actual grounds were that Henry had had sex with someone to closely related to him. The grounds of non consummation were not valid with either lady.

In history, Anne was said to have pretended not to be able to pronounce Cromwell's name properly and instead pronounced it "Cremuel" as it would have been in a French accent. She liked to flaunt her sophistication, as Cromwell was the son of a commoner. It was both a way for her to taunt him, and when they were friends for a time, to affectionately tease him.
