When Colin Firth was first asked to play Mr. Darcy, he refused. When he was asked for the second time, he told his brother, Jonathan, about it and Jonathan said, “But isn’t Mr. Darcy a great romantic hero?” Colin agreed that he was and then Jonathan proceeded to laugh his head off and told Colin there was no way he could ever be a great romantic hero. Naturally, this made Colin mad so he showed everyone just how wonderful he could be. Thanks, Jonathan! We owe you one!

+Tsukiko Mikihara That is what makes him a true gentleman, a member of the aristocracy, manner and behaviour when in the presence of ladies. His position at the top of 19C society, ensured he knew how to behave in public. His manner and behaviour at the start of the novel, was only towards his inferiors, or those below him socially. It was only Elizabeth's abrupt and forthright behaviour towards him, that brought him out of his shell. He saw her as an equal, even though they mixed in totally different circles. One of Brontes masterpieces.

Darcy was originally to have stripped and jumped in the pond fully nude and thereafter so encountered Elizabeth. How spectacularly lusty that would have been, but the BBC wouldn't allow it and, thus, we have the improbable fully clothed Darcy version.

The language is so beautiful. Event though it's a confrontational scene, one of my favorite bits of dialogue from the miniseries is after Lady Catherine catches up with Lizzie who previously left her in the garden of Longbourn after being accused of being engaged to Mr. Darcy. They're next to Lady Catherine's carriage when the woman accuses Lizzie of being determined to make Mr. Darcy "the contempt of the world" because Lizzie won't commit to not marrying him should he propose to her again. Lizzie responds to Lady Catherine by saying, "I am only resolved to act in a manner which will constitute my own happiness without reference to you or to any person so wholly unconnected with me." What a beautiful way to blow someone off by essentially saying, "I don't have to ask permission of anyone in how to live my life, least of all you who I barely know."

I'm going to disagree with you there, if I may? At this point he has no idea she might be thawing (because one is always the last person to know if a woman fancies you), he's just on his best behaviour, pleased she's there and not tearing him a new one - and she is sort of conveying "am I being kind enough to your sister?" vibes. But she is, I agree definitely more interested in him and prepared to reevaluate him. But I agree, it's a rather nice look of new understanding.

I realized cave girls and cave women doubtlessly did the inhale-arm lift-which if one thinks about it sounds like a hydraulic shovel for displacing ground and making a big hole to drop into, and quickly too. I laughed and laughed all over again. 😊 thanks!

@@Musicienne-DAB1995 I've just watched both versions and the movie seemed so lacking after the series, there was not enough time to explore the subtleties and shifting emotions. Elizabeth seemed to take more time with the statues than anyone. And secondary character like Collins seemed to take much of the precious runtime. Characters seemed as if cardboard cutouts in comparison to lively and realistic depiction of the series where banter and emotional hits were the driving force. They tried to recapture the magic but missed out on some key ingredients. It had pretty cinematography and scenery, I suppose, but that's the extent of what it made me FEEL. While the series I could rewatch forever. I feel similarly to Poirot series vs. Hollywood movies. The characters turn grandiose and inhuman for the big screen instead of having warmness, realism and flaws like the series.

@@InternetNonsense I completely agree with your criticisms of the movie, but I will suggest that time constraints were not the main problem. I say this because the 1995 'Sense and Sensibility' movie also took liberties with the original novel (dispensing with Lady Middleton, and imagining Margaret as a girl interested in travel), yet is an utter delight to watch. It is, as you say, the reduction of subtlety and wit in the name of overt emotion that makes the 2005 movie far weaker than the 1995 miniseries (which also took liberties with the novel).

I will say, about two years ago I watched this series for the mere purpose of criticizing it so I could see how the 2005 film was so much more superior, in terms of the actors playing the characters, the soundtrack, and like all my other fellow Americans who get bored so easily: the length. But WHOA. I was not expecting to love it as much I did. Minutes into the first episode I felt really connected to the characters and their believable portrayals from the actors, while also feeling ashamed of how I had judged it so quickly. And now every year around Christmas time (around the time when I first saw it) I still get the same sensation as I did before as I hear the notes of the opening credits. And I get excited to go along the journey with Lizzie Bennet of falling in love with Mr. Darcy all over again. I don't think anything on TV or film has elicited a feeling like that in me, I'm glad I hold this one so dear to my heart!!

I had a friend who, even before the other version, thought I was boring watching this. She teased me until I sat her down to watch it. Of course she fell in love with it, quotes it endlessly, watches it as a comfort movie and completely forgets that she ridiculed me for my love of it, in fact, she would lead people to believe she introduced to to me....the thankless trollope.

I just love it when the proud Mr. Darcy is at a loss of words and repeats himself, even Ms. Bennett has a laugh about that. Just love Colin Firth in his other movies too.
