The marriage of Louis XIV of France with Marie Therese of Spain in 1660 was an arranged union meant to serve a political purpose. However, Louis XIV married in secret some years later when he fell in love with the Marquise de Maintenon. This is an extraordinary story of a woman who captured the king’s heart and became his wife against the royal conventions of the court of Louis XIV of France.

It’s always so nice to listen to a French native narrate French history. As one who knows the language, I often bristle when many English speakers do presentations involving French names, places, and events; they frequently mispronounce the words. The woman on this video does such a nice job. Not only is the French all exquisitely spoken; but also, her tone is lovely and graceful. Thank you for posting this brief but thorough overview of Mme. de Maintenon, a lady who lived her life well and honorably.

As an American who studied french in school for five years, I always practiced pronouncing every word correctly. When I went to France years later, I made sure to speak it correctly to everyone I was talking to, but I knew that I must have had an accent because the first thing they did was smile. Everyone was so kind to me though, and to this day, France is still my favorite country!! ❤️

Finally! The history of the French monarchs in English. I needed this. Now I can enjoy one of my favorite subjects while performing other household tasks. I have never had the patience to sit still and read subtitles. Two of my favorite historical figures are Catherine de Medici, and Madame de Pompadour. Women who had much more influence on history than they are given credit for, not unlike the Marquise de Maintenon and her predecessor. I am fascinated when women take on such significant rolls against all odds in a time of male dominance.

Well initialy it was a scool where girls where brought up to be educated in the arts, music etc to let them have a good chance to find a suitable husband. The older madame the maintenon came and more religious, the scool got deprived from the finer education and turned more into a convent. As it first gave the girls a sense of freedom it became more of a prison.

Oh give me a break. He was a notorious philanderer when he was a younger man even for a French King. He made his lecherous cousin Charles II of England seem practically chaste by comparison. Louis’ aunt Henrietta Maria knew what she was talking about when she once referred to her husband and their marriage years after his execution back in England at the hands of the Parliamentarians. ‘I was the luckiest of Queens,’ her reference being to Charles I’s complete love and fidelity to her for the whole of their marriage. Living much of her life in exile back in France, she knew very well the very different approach Louis took to being a husband and the practice of fidelity. And he turned to Madame de Maintenant when the flames of passion were rapidly dissipating as he aged. And though in his younger years he was tall and athletic, he was never any particular beauty in the masculine sense, as portraits make clear. With age and pounds he became downright decidedly unattractive, to put it mildly. But fortunately for him, despite his lack of sexual appeal, throughout his life he had the kind of life he wanted because he was King of France. Yet he wasn’t invincible, the dissipations of his youth eventually led his body to really begin falling apart in his last years, in ways that were both painfully unpleasant and humiliating. His ailments were helped very little even by the ministrations of his wife, simply because few of the known remedies for most types of ailments really did much good in those days. Indeed many treatments were downright harmful. Because most concepts of how the body worked dated back to Classical Greek and Roman times. Despite all the knowledge recovered in architecture, engineering and other sciences during the Renaissance, in medicine the ancient Greeks and Romans were little better informed than medieval Europeans. Overall Louis XIV had pretty much had his own way during his lifetime until his last years. Then metaphorically the bills in terms of physical health started coming due. And considering the suffering he imposed on much of Europe with the many mostly pointless wars he waged against his neighbours, and the state of economic exhaustion he left his country in, you could argue it was a modest penalty to suffer to feed his monstrous ego.

Having huguenot ancestry, she is not one of my favorite women in history. To me, she was a snake in the grass and an opportunist.
