So, let me get this straight, I don't really follow football outside of Joe getting mad about madden. So, John Madden had serious issues with EA fucking around with the big football game, and so hasn't been on a cover since 2000. John died in December of last year, and now, less than a year later, he is getting slapped all over Madden 23. Did they really just wait until he died to use him for marketing when he couldn't say no? I don't know a lot about this as an outsider, but even to me that seems incredibly disrespectful and appalling to a man with such a legacy.

youre right, he was a consultant up until 2012 i believe, He has outright stopped supporting the game around 2010, he used to mentioned it in the early 2000's once ea got the nfl rights in 2006 and any other football games that did come out didnt do well financially (due to shady marketing by ea) they started phoning it in around 2014, i was a madden online player until i noticed it wasnt about skill it was about how many cheat codes you have and how may packs you got (this was from 2011-2012) and i heard it got even worse with punters playing qb and scoring 50pts on ppl youre right this is extremely shady and shitty for ea as joe said they are also putting things in the game that madden was against

Madden took issue with the original Madden NFL games in the early 90s. They didn't even have the right number of players on the field. That's why Madden actually got involved in consulting for the game. It got much better in the 2000s, and started to really suck again once we got to the PS4 Xbox One generation.

When the original Madden came out for the computer it was a great game . You could edit and make up every teams roster. Me and some friends did that as teenagers in the 90s. You could create your own plays . You didn’t need to buy it every year as you could update it. What a joke it has become

Gotta love how most people criticize Madden’s lack of attention to detail so in their trailer they do effects on the player’s legs and stuff so they can say “Hey guys! We’re paying attention to the details of our player movements and stuff! Madden 06 was my favorite and it was the first one I had learned to use hit stick. You could use it on offense as well by making your character duck a tackle if you timed it perfectly.

Once they added in unstoppable MIchael Vick and started rehashing the same game over and over with all the same shitty bugs I was done and haven't bought or played it since 2003 before they got the exclusive license. ESPN NFL 2k5 was such a better game it wasn't even worth going back to try and play Madden and now, it especially isn't.

It’s in the hands of the consumers. I’d also sell my own shit if people were buying it in troves. I’d even keep laxatives on hand at all times just in case. That said, all games borrow heavily from the most popular games in their respective genre. Never trying anything new or bold. Relying on marketing tactics. That’s why I like smaller publishers and developers. They create quality content and take care of their classic games as well. THQ Nordic is one of my favorites.

2K did the same thing with Kobe Bryant on the Special Edition covers. But this one is certainly MORE fucked up because EA clearly saw that, put John Madden on *all* the covers to make it seem like they're not doing what 2K did because no matter if its the standard or special, you get John Madden on the cover. Make them look good in comparison to 2K. But EA still pulls the $100+ editons that paywall the things that would give buyers an advantage.

It's unbelievable how much of this stuff was already around in Madden 10,11, and 12. Pretty sure those had the whole mash button to recover fumble thing. Looking back on Madden 12 for instance. That game on PS3 had all of this basically. Even the sim engine gave you pretty realistic stats, something we haven't had in eons.

I personally liked the mash fumble recovery mechanic. Maybe adjust it so it's with the joystick instead but I thought it added some kinds realism to the game since fumbles tend to be a struggle, and some of the most entertaining parts of a real game too

Do we know what shape of was he in? How his mental health was? Only God truly knows. he could have easily been paid to keep quiet and for them just to continue to use his name but based on what I know personally I never heard him speak against anything that was going on. Maybe he knew maybe he didn't. All I can say is look up to see if he ever did but I believe if he would have it would have been newsworthy

The thing that baffles me is that All Pro 2k8 (and prior 2k games) had physics based gameplay, and the animations in NCAA13 and 14 were better than what EA offers in Madden today. It’s honestly baffling that the two best football games made were in 2007 and 2013, while Madded has been treading water for years.

I forget what year, but EA invested in the Frostbite engine for madden that made everything animation based and absolutely horrendous. I believe around this time UT also became popular and increased sales. If young kids and people addicted to UT exceed previous sales numbers, why would EA do anything? My 10 y/o nephew is enthralled with the game every year because he gets to play as his favorite players (zero expectations). I would compare to demanding McDonals increase the quality of their food. EA knows it’s target demographic and serves up the same McDouble cheeseburger they know the lowest common denominator will buy each and every release.
