You're right about the driving here in the US. After the pandemic, it turned people into angry drivers. Be careful, I have seen a lot of road rage incidents.

I'm going home for one month so see family, (mostly my dad he's 87) I was used to all the tablets and taps and apps before we left almost 3 years ago. I thinking the food is going to a big issue not because of allergies, just how awful it is haha. The cost of everything has skyrocketed as well I'm sure. Now keep in mind I'm going to Northern Canada where it's even more expensive than anywhere in the USA. I'll also be going in July so I don't freeze my a** off hahaha ( a little nervous about traveling alone this will be my first trip without my wife)

I lived in Japan 3 years & I had really adjusted to the culture & way of life. It was very safe & I was treated like a celebrity. I was in extreme shock to be back in the U.S.!

I’m 82, what you are experiencing is EXACTLY what I experience every I go outside. I’ve chosen to live as a kinda sorta shutin because of the humiliation I feel when I go out….. from the gas stations to any other place other than just walking. Inside I’m just fine…. What is expected of me is undoable with any kind of grace so I’m laying low most days. It’s humiliating.😂 welcome home! Looking for E.T. ……

Maddie, I'm a 2nd generation born American. I was married to my beautiful Mexican wife for many years she passed away of cancer. One of the great culture values of the Méxican culture that I love is how Mexicans are so polite. The greetings from the Mexican people is so charming and I love that. I lived in León Guanajuato and having lived many years there I dig that very aspect. Here in the USA it's the transient aspect of the American society. People here in the USA, especially in large cities, could care less. It has to do with the values. How you were raised, the lack of community culture not raised in church. The selfishness of the American culture, not all but many. Sad! Still as a Mexican/American I love both cultures and countries!

I'm from Veracruz. When I was a kid I used to go run errands for my grandma (I lived in a small town), and I used to see a lot of elderly couples sit on their porches and as I walked from and back home I'd say "Buenos dias/tardes/noches" to them every time and they'd greet me back ❤😂 I miss that sooooo much!

I couldn't agree more, except about being raised in a church. I have tons of friends not raised in any religion and they have fantastic values and are well mannered. But as for the rest of what you said, absolutely. Americans have become so selfish and feel really entitled to call people out for something they don't like. Like it's happened to me numerous times for really odd reasons. I've traveled in many countries and BY far, Americans are the most rude. We seem to have lost most of our social decorum in manners and dress. I am not bashing dressing casual, but it's sad to see just how little some people care about how they present themselves outside of their homes. You do not see that in other places unless you're homeless and have no choice.

I have major tipping fatigue. I'm most annoyed with default 15-20% tips at takeout checkouts. Having to hit extra buttons to say zero or no tip is infuriating. I'm done paying $5-10 because someone spent thirty seconds entering my order into their system. I no longer pay it and have even stopped patronizing businesses that do it. I'll tip at a sit-down restaurant or when someone goes above and beyond but I'm no longer paying extra for someone to do their job.

I am not tipping at takeouts. It isn't going to happen. I ran across a place the other day that had no "Other" option. It was 20% and over or nothing. They don't realize that they're screwing their own wait staff.

What you’re not mentioning is that most of the people you’re not tipping at the cash register aren’t making a living wage and certainly aren’t able to really save or invest much of their income The reason the screen tipping came into being was because it’s a band aid for the poverty most Americans are living in-most jobs don’t pay a living wage so what are most people supposed to do? Admittedly it’s a terrible band aid but the very reason they’re asking is the exact same reason YOU don’t want to tip them: you don’t have enough money/financial security either So maybe consider spreading what little “wealth” you have to people doing jobs you likely wouldn’t choose to take at this point in your life and yet still contribute to the life you want to live (going to cafes and other non-sit down restaurant experiences)

You are safe to travel to most main cities. Americans are welcome everywhere. Mex city has had an invasion from expats since 2020 so prices and service have been compromised in the expat areas. Do avoid cartel states (northern, jalisco and zacatecas) guanajuato is too gorgeous to black list. Just avoid rural roads.

Excuse me? The food in Mexico is healthier than in US, fruit, vegetables, meat, chicken, shrimp, fish, etc etc. If you are going to restaurantes, it depends. The worst thing in US is the fast food that many people eat, I don't like to see those companies in Mexico. Maddie once said, she was really sick, she could barely eat due to all the conservatives and pesticides, etc in fruits, vegetables, etc; in Mexico is the same thing with less ingredients. In Mexico you can find healthy stores too

Yeah, I have the same situation my allergies go away in Mexico, this time it was ridiculous, no allergies for a 3 days trip, then came back and allergies after one hour at my house in US, maybe they are pesticides in the air to kill mosquitoes, or to get rid of the weed for our beautiful yards or you owe the city that doesn't happen in Mx

Lived in Queretaro for a year and a half and just came back to San Diego and I literally waited for 10 mins @ the pump till I finally realized I was back home and needed to pump my own fuel lol

I was living in California when I visited Oregon and pulled up to a gas station where a man came to my window. I figured some BS was about to go down, but nope, he was there to pump my gas because in that particular county, drivers are not allowed to pump their own. Welcome back Maddie. You’ve been missed!

@@karinacarvajal9919 we’ve just changed it to an “option “ to have your gas pumped or not. It was voted in. I think it’s because some gas stations can’t afford a lot of help anymore. Wages and are too low, so fewer people apply.

This crazy inflation has only happened in the past couple of years. At one point, the stores admitted they are gouging us to make up for what they lost during the pandemic. But they've gotten that back now, and they're STILL gouging us because they can. I'm seriously thinking of moving to Mexico. I live on SS, and I may soon be homeless due to the rising rents. Still, it's not cheap to move there. It's so hard for people like me. Isn't it strange that there are so many more allergies in the US than other countries?

Yes it is on purpose that soooooo many people and all life in the US are sick and dying. The US has the most sickness than anywhere in the world. Lots of reasons but the biggest reason is Geoengineering-Aerial Spraying daily all over the US and the countries too. Learn at geoengineering watch. My personal guess is that it's the food: it's got so many sweeteners and additives and artificial colors that ends up being toxic. I've known plenty of US folks who claim that after moving to Europe, East Asia or LatAm, they started losing weight without any real effort on their part - just eating more natural stuff. You know, prenty of food in the States has chemicals that are forbidden in the European Union, but sadly the US has made it so it's legal to bribe a politician as long as it's in the open via lobbying

I left for a month and a half and was a mess when I came back to Canada. People in Mex have far better etiquette. I was healthier. They are not regulated to death when starting a small business. Yes i understand “cartel” life. Here it’s called CRA. To start a little bicycle icecream business will cost you 3k just for the permitting process. There is no way for our locals to get ahead. We are regulated to “give up”. Food sticker shock, homelessness, lack of public art is a huge issue for me. Mex did mess up seafood everywhere I went this time. I just had such consistent bad luck that I lived in pizza and bagels. I couldn’t eat any fish (my fav) And yes you’re right. The food here in North America is like poison within two weeks I gained weight and have painful belly bloat. Our food in North America is full of garbage

I’ve lived in Mexico for two years and I just came back from a three week visit to the US the entire time I was there even when I supposedly was eating cage, free organic eggs, etc. my stomach hurt and was bloated the whole time, I’ve been home In Mexico for two weeks and my tummy is flat and feeling great again.

I moved to Guadalajara nearly five years ago, and haven't wanted to go back to the US yet - even for visits. This video just confirms that for me. I have friends here, I live a simple life in a quiet and walkable neighborhood, the people are friendly, and I can find everything I need and most of what I want, except for good Chinese food and good quality sausages. Mexico does not do sausages well. But I can live with that. I do video calls with friends and family in the USA, but - no, I shudder when I think of visiting. Mexico's daily culture is just more friendly, more cooperative, more civilized, in spite of the very real problems here.

I had dental work in Guadalajara last year and fell in love with the area. That zoo! At 62, I could not take the rush of the city, but I took my daughter to Chapala and found paradise. I returned to Wisconsin in a terrible snowstorm and cried for days.

One of the things, my husband and I really enjoy when traveling to Mexico is going to the centro and just sitting on the benches, watching and talking to people. Also, listening to people when they tell you provecho when eating a meal is also remarkable. The pace of life is certainly different. Great video!

Best of luck to you being back in the USA. Imoved to Mexico six years ago, but in my case I'm never going back to the madness that is the US. Mexico is now my home and I love the people, the food, and the country. Mass shootings happen every day up there and I no longer feel safe when I travel to the US.

Hi Maddie ❤ it’s so great to see you. I totally get it about the greetings and lack there of in the US. I just went from January 10 until February 4 to visit friends in Missouri after living here in Mexico for two years. I’m so used to greeting everyone I walked past and making that connection. I really got looked at like I was crazy several times. To be honest, I’ve been on this earth 53 years and it used to not always be this way. It just seems it’s gotten more and more as time rolls on in our crazy world. There’s been a big shift since Mobile devices, tecnólogo such as kiosk checkout and the pandemic where people have isolated themselves so much from human connection. I was so happy to see my people in the US but the whole time I was there I felt high anxiety and could not wait to get home to Mexico. I also noticed a big change in my friends, and they all seemed not as happy as I remembered them before, and actually quite depressed. There is a heaviness there that is very hard to explain. The first thing I did when I got home was grab my bags and walk down to my little Tienda in my neighborhood to greet/visit with my favorite vendors, buy my fresh food and pay in pesos. I’ve become good friends with one of my vendors, and they always offer me coffee a taco, even some rum. 😅 and I always take them little gifts like chocolate and food that I make. It’s a beautiful way to live, and I could never go back to living in the United States. I hope that things get to a point Maddie where you can return to Mexico or somewhere that speaks to your beautiful heart.

I was in Quintanaroo like two years ago, and I had been rushing from Minnesota all the way to Cancun and didn't have a chance to eat and I was pregnant. I had told myself I wouldn't eat from just anywhere to be safe, I was so hungry though that this lady got on the bus she was selling burgers, the burger was sooooo good, the meat tasted so real. This was my first time back in Mexico in like 20 years. I didn't get sick at all.

Tipping has gotten so out of control I've come to the point I just don't tip anymore. The company you work for should pay your wage not me. They say if you can't afford to tip don't go out (which I rarely do) I say if you have to rely on tips, get a real job. Food quality and service suck so bad now its stupid so again I rarely ever go out anymore to eat, never eat fast food and very rarely tip. I will say on the very rare occasion I do go out and if I get exceptional service then I will tip the snot out of them but its so rare its really not a thing.

YES! I am a lawyer and I can't afford to eat out. Recently I took a business friend to one of those breakfast style places. She had a chicken sandwich and I had meatloaf. FORTY BUCKS! Fifty with the tip. Arggggg!

I have no desire to live in the U.S.A. ever again. I only want to visit my children once a year or travel there if there is an absolute necessity. Too much stress, not much friendliness, too much division, and way too many guns, and the food is not that healthy or affordable. I am happiest outside of the U.S.A.

Thanks. Great video. It's not just Mexico that has better food. I lived in California for 20 years, and when I retired, I got a contract in Montenegro (for non-geography buffs, it used to be part of Yugoslavia.) I had Type 2 diabetes and hypertension. Both went away after I lived here for 6 months. I also lost 20 pounds. Here's my answer why: the food. They don't add sugar to everything. They cook with traditional fats and oils: olive, butter, lard, and tallow. (I can just hear the American Heart Association screaming about that.) People here eat eggs, meat, real sour cream, real cheeses, and bread that isn't just starch and sugar. There's no trend to become herbivores and eat like farm animals. Americans became fat-phobic: low fat this, no fat that, and substituted seed oils for cooking and carbohydrates for fat. Fat doesn't make you fat -- but carbs sure do! I feel I was betrayed by the dietary advice that created the Standard American Diet.

I agree with the kiosks and the price of everything. I would like to add tipping for EVERYTHING! You literally handed me a coffee and now you want a tip or even a 20 percent tip. It’s everywhere! I’m all for tipping (I’m a hairstylist) but this new tipping culture is giving tipping fatigue for sure. I’m in Mexico now, the driving is always an adjustment 🥴

Pressure tipping. I have absolutely no problem not doing it. At the Starbucks drive trough I just tell them straight up to run the card without the tip. Works every time.

I found reverse culture shock much more difficult than culture shock for the reasons you mentioned but many more that you didn’t mention like not having a neighborhood where you know your neighbors or a sense of community support or it being ‘normal’ to have a completely separate ‘personal’ and ‘professional’ life; your job being the main or sole focus of your life; eating to live instead of living to eat; the insane focus on job performance… Even after sort of getting used to it as soon as I got to opportunity to leave again I took it and only return for family visits.

Forget the "apps". Pay CASH! It is the simplest, best for the merchants who don't have to pay transaction fees to the banks and best for you since you retain privacy and control over the transaction. Nobody can stop the transaction the way they can if you pay electronically.

What they don't realize are the dangers in giving up control of the purchases they are making that cash gives them and your Smart phone or credit card does NOT because there is ALWAYS another person or computer that will decide to authorize it or not authorize the transaction.>>> More and more people are refusing to shop where cash is not accepted - myself included. I'm mexican but I have driven a rental car in the USA. I find it insane how fast people drive in the freeways, like americans trust so much the car and other people not doing something wrong. I don't mean to sound rude but it seems everyone is in a big hurry to get somewhere. Other than freeways driving there is pretty orderly and nice.

You've got it. We don't go out to eat anymore, just too expensive. I had to put an App on my phone to get a certain discount in a certain store, but I have trouble pulling it up. We're both husband and myself are high in our 80's, and we have a heep of trouble with all that technology. We are to the point, that, if I don't find it in the store or something similar, we do without. Yes Maddie, the driving is awful. A lot of drivers do what they want, cut you off, going across 3 lanes, it's just awful.

I would say the US is better for single women safety wise and less machismo guys. And then there is the water situation-good showers are hard to find in Mexico. Welcome back... Talking about food allergies, and how food affects our everyday health. I'm a truck driver, worked for a chemical company for a decade. This company had 3 divisions, food grade, industrial and farm grade. Frequently chemicals crossed over from division to division. This includes food grade, which is what most of our food is made or manufacture. A lot of the people who actually worked hands on with these chemicals are dead. Too much cancer! Chemicals are everywhere in the North American diet. 2 years ago after a close family member died, I changed everything about my diet. As long as one commits to this almost 100% it does work. After a week in Huatulco this year, the food made me feel so much better than the last year and a half, and my diet at home made me feel good.

When tipping keep in mind the tip is added after tax on your bill. I did not realize this until recently, so your actually tipping more if your not paying attention. Manually calculate the percent you want to tip based on the dollar amount you spent based on your service vs accepting the total the pay pad gives you, because you'll overpay a good 2-3% due to the tax included in the tip if your not paying attention.

Welcome back..I’ve thought of you often so was excited to see you were doing a video. We moved to San Diego from QRO in July. Mexico was a grand adventure but we are glad to be back. We’ve commented how there is so much less stress with day to day life. Example going to the bank is sooo much easier in terms of getting interactions done. Or phone interactions are less stressful. Omg I couldn't relate more! I'm from México (Pachuca to be specific) but I moved to the U.S. for college about 6 years ago. I graduated, then went back to MX, then decided to go for my Master's before it was too late. I did spend a couple years in Pachuca before moving back to Orlando, FL, and omg every thing you said is so true. Everything from the inflation, to that weird feeling of the car behind you rushing you and almost bumping into your car when at a stop light. It's so strange that a country could change so much after just 6 years of moving here for the first time. I suppose no place is perfect but I still love both countries despite their flaws. However, the ABUNDANCE of food (portion sizes) is also wild. The SUPER CONVENIENCE of buying stuff... Yet the dismal lack of social spaces / driving everywhere / car culture...

Great video! Can only imagine replacing household items along with relocation and all the other stresses. You have probably already discovered thrift stores, but you can find almost new kitchen and household items while saving $ + helping the environment. I’ve actually found the apps to be very helpful. I know it’s not for everybody but you can avoid the kiosks if you have an app.😂 as far as meeting people goes, maybe try networking groups, or other interests like hiking and joining those groups. I understand how hard it is because I have relocated 4 times in the last 24 years. Everywhere you live has a different culture even if it’s in the same country. My best advice is to enjoy who you are and not try to change yourself because you won’t be able to change yourself. Just love yourself the way you are, if I had known that along time ago, I would’ve had a completely different life path. You can’t change for other people.

I completely understand your dilemma. I went back to the U.S. this past December from Mexico…I was in Arizona for only 2 weeks and I experienced culture shock. I am 65 years old, disabled and Native Hawaiian born and raised in Hawaii so the U.S. Continent is not a part of my culture anyway. I know you went back to Phoenix because of your Fathers Surgery and I’m sure because of other reasons, however, my tip to you is: Move Back to Mexico! I understand the frustrations, that’s why I still live in Mexico. I feel ya!

Here in Oaxaca not only is it impossible to buy an Epi-pen but there is only ONE pharmacy in Oaxaca City that even carries epinephrine or adrenaline (in a little glass ampule that you snap the top off to draw up i to a syringe). It really makes me think that serious allergies must not be much of a thing at all here. Thankfully I have never needed to actually Epi and have been able to use homeopathy to pull me out of anaphylaxis each time, but I still make sure I have epinephrine on hand just in case. It looks like very few locals have need of it though. Which is astounding when you think of how many people, especially kids, in the US carry Epi-pens these days. The good part is that while Epi-pens bought in the US without insurance are many hundreds of dollars and ampule of epinephrine here is only the equivalent of $1.25 USD.

Yes! I tell everyone with allergies to bring their own Epipens with them to Mexico. An acquaintance had a relative pass away because they could not find anything to treat an unexpected anaphylaxis attack in the PVR area. Having been in that situation back home in Canada with my sister and a happy outcome I could only imagine the horror of being helpless with no remedy.

It's funny you mention that because it's something I've also noticed, I don't meet as many people with allergies in Mexico. I saw a video a while back explaining that it may have something to do with the trees in the US. They only allow male trees to be planted so they won't give off fruit and something with the pollen is what's causing all those allergies here in the US.

Well documented greedflation is a big part of the problem - companies saw that the pandemic was fueling some inflation - so they raised their prices even more and put that into windfall profits. The blamed it on workers getting a little more pay.

i´m from Mexico and i agree with everything you have said!! All those cultural shocks happens every time i travel to the US, specially felt super relatable with the traffic comparison. Still i think you left one of the most important diferences i noticed between Mx and Us, its the security. In Mx if you get mugged, we dont trust the police to ask for help because sometimes they're the robbers, and in the Us you know you can approach an officer without problem because there is a state of law

I have gotten to the point with tipping that unless you make a tipping wage (ie $2-3/hr, servers) you are getting nothing from me. If you want more money, go talk to your employer. Its not on me to makeup the difference the employer should be paying for you to do your job.

@@MaddieGold I did make a mistake with the first city I settled in so I have moved to the west coast just a few days ago and so far the vibe is much better. With the food, I have just stopped eating certain things and rely on mostly vegetarian. It is so difficult to find things that aren't loaded with sugar or the HFCS. I agree with the prices being insane. Also, the tipping culture was difficult to get used to. There is no tipping in Australia.

Maddie, I love you. You are so funny. I have missed you. Now you know what it is like for us older folks. I moved to Mexico the same time you did, 6 years ago, and still live here in Rosarito Beach, Baja California Norte, Mx. I cross the border into San Diego 2-4 on average per month. I have had my Permanent Resident status for almost 5 years. I practice more Spanish in Chula Vista than in Mx. It is so confusing. Wednesday, I got stuck in a traffic jam at shopping area that has Walmart, Home Depot, Big 5, restaurants right off the 5 fwy heading to Imperial Beach. There is only 1 entrance in, and 1 out. We were stuck for over two hours. I walked around talking to people, "Wow, this is worse than crossing the border". I had someone waiting for me that I had let out of my car to walk across border into US since she didn't have global entry or Sentri. I had a dr appt I couldn't be late for in US. With this grid lock, I wasn't going anywhere. When we finally started morning and I got out of there, I realized someone had called the City police to direct traffic. Why didn't I think of that before? I could have called police as I entered. I was in the US. Mexico police would have laughed at me. Actually, I'm working on a presentation for gringos on 50 Ways to De-stress while crossing the border. Yes, hopping out of the car, and doing the hockey pokey is one of them...when you shake it all about, you shake out the frustration and anxiety.

You are so right, Maddie! As you were talking, I'm going, yep that's what I said!!! On the other hand, I just left Mexico last week to return to Georgia, and we've seen so many changes there as well. I live in Cuernavaca there, but the costs have risen greatly. Rents have gone up considerably and we don't even have a beach lol. Supposedly the people don't make as much, right? But, the clothes, shoes, furniture and things that people really need are just as expensive there as here in the States. The malls and tourist areas of the city are getting fancier and fancier, but the other areas are being neglected. I realize that this might have more to do with the particular city, but I've heard the same kinds of things from others in Mazatlan and say Playa del Carmen. The US is still some years ahead of Mexico, but Mexico is catching up quickly and, as you say, call me oldl fashioned, but I don't believe it's progress. It's good to see you back. A lot of our youtubers are leaving it behind. I think it must be harder to do this than more regular jobs. Best of luck to you in settling in. I know your family is happy to have you back!
