No surprise, you love Roberts hair, with that great hair you’ve got rocking too! It's a shame that the radio only plays the same 3 commercialized, cookie cutter songs, over and over and over. People are completely oblivious to real music that has soul, and that can actually change how you feel and your outlook on things. The way that REAL music can completely change your mood and give you a different attitude or even outlook on life, if even only for that minute, hour, or day, is seriously under appreciated.

I totally agree,@@patrice384... However, a LOT of what "they" (mainly Robert!) wrote about was borrowed from (Af-Am) old-school blues. Eventually, Zepp gave credit to a number of black bluesmen, for many of Robert's lyrics&vocalizations AND (esp Jimmy's guitar)licks!

Great reaction - I just stumbled upon your channel. They just laid it all out there on the stage. Many of the critics shot down their albums and gave them bad reviews. Despite all the negative critics Led Zeppelin outsold The Rolling Stones, The Who and even Elvis Presley. Their concert tickets outsold Elvis and he requested to meet them. They all met and had a good time chatting. Led Zeppelin ruled the 1970s and never won a Grammy Award -- LOL. Two of their album cover were nominated for Grammys -- and none of their songs or music were - LOL. Check out Achilles' Last Stand from Knebworth Aug 4th, 1979 live concert video for that song. That would be six years after this performance you just watched. 220,000 people were watching them on that night at Knebworth.

This song, and "In My Time of Dying", are my two favorite LZ songs, but you rarely heard them, even in the 70's because they weren't considered commercial enough for radio. You might be surprised that back in the late 1960s and early 70's songs like this were only played on "underground" FM stations or college stations after midnight. When I was an undergrad I'd schedule afternoon classes so I could stay up until 3 or 4:00 AM and listen to all the tracks that weren't being played during the day. It was an incredible time for rock music with talent seemingly coming out of nowhere every day.. I discovered LZ completely by accident when I happened to be at the record store when the clerk was unboxing their first album. I loved their name and the cover art with the Hindenburg and bought it without knowing who they were. When I put it on the turn table I was blown away and told everyone I knew they had to hear these guys. Not long afterwards the FM stations got wind of them and started playing their more mainstream songs. As FM started growing their music got a lot more airplay and became popular; the rest is history. As you heard, they've always been inspired by blues classics and you can hear that in much of their music. So while everybody heard "Stairway to Heaven" played over and over again, some of their best music is still unknown to most people. You just discovered a gem so keep digging, there's more out there!

One thing you have to consider... back then... Most people NEVER knew what artists looked like.. their 1st exposure to an artist was typically via radio. It was only until they got an album that they'd actually see the artist picture. Back then there was only print media... no internet, no video, nothing digital. Heck TV only had 3 channels (ABC, CBS, NBC) and the only way music got on TV was something really really late at night like Don Kirshners Rock Concert... and Zep was WAY too huge for that. So the only way to see a band was to go to the gig. The only way most folks saw their favorite artists was via music magazines like Rolling Stone, Creem, Hit Parader, Kerrang!, and others. I knew a lot of girls who never went to a show.. but had their walls COVERED in posters of their favorite artists. Many of those girls had the same poster of Robert Plant on their wall and they all drooled over it... he was a Nordic god to them.

Can't go wrong with a bit of Zep, Maddy. You're right, this live performance oozes energy. The opening solo has a deliberate strong resemblance of the middle eight solo on the Led Zep III album. It works brilliant as an introduction, smashes you in the mouth from the get go. It is such a bluesy song. This is absolutely the right one to react to and I enjoyed your views on it. When you get a mo, I'd strongly recommend listening to the studio original, not as a trade off/compare which is best, simply because I must have listened to it a thousand times, it is truly iconic!

Back then we knew bands from the radio and sometimes got to go a to concert to actually see them. Every popular band was so recognizable and unique in their sound that we knew who the band was within the first two measures of music, even if the song was a new release. MTV changed this to some extent as how a band looked on TV became what people associated with the music, and to a great extent rather than a unique sound they may have had.
