The 30 years war 1618-1648 from a young swedish boys perspective sent out to a war to a foreign country. The 30 years war are considered by many Europeans as the First world war because so many countries were involved. During that time many was born into the war, and at the age of 14 they were sent out. Sabaton from Sweden are masters in storytelling and all their songs are about historical events from all around the world, without taking sides.

@@Northman-from-the-North Aye. Stable boys, cooks, supply clerks or whatever - once soldiers died they were given the opportunity to sign up as soldiers. And many men dragged a wife and possibly kids around as well. Some of those children surely did enlist straight out of the follower camp, never knowing anything but war in a foreign country.

Here most if not all are swedish, but when they sing this at their own festival or in other countries and the crowd wants it in swedish, the crowd sings along. I have been to their festival 5 times and heard En Livstid i Krig 3 or 4 times, can't remember, but every time people from all over the world sang along in swedish. Also being in that crowd is also insane, you feel pride singing with 14,000 people honoring warriors and mourn the loss of them! Sabaton is so special, they bridge cultures because in some songs they sing very neutral, and even when they don't they are just celebrating heroic deeds, heroic people, regular people. No matter what side the soldiers were on.

Thing is - this is the 30 year war. They didn't fight for their country. They fought for plunder, for the power of unelected monarchs who drug their countries into ruin. At home, there was famine and poverty, the young people who should have taken care of the farms dragged away to fight in wars. And who would remember them after 30 years?

Men built the world, men maintain the world, men will die for their country, men will die for their family, men will protect women and children at any cost...yet we are now being looked down upon and disrespected more then ever. Really wish i lived in a time where these kinds of lyrics would get the recognition, respect and admiration it takes to be a man and all the hard work we face everyday. As a former Soldier i sometimes miss the fields, even tho it might be scarier and i might potentially die....it feels easier then having a normal job and going day by day in the current time we live in. These lyrics i can imagine hits home to many Ukranian Soldiers who was forced to fight, repsect to my Ukranian brothers in arms! Also, would recommend the subtitles version. Gives more depth and perception to the song

A little background to the song: Lifetime in war: The song is about how Swedish soldiers participated in the 30-year war that was between the years 1618 - 1648. At that time, when men were killed, they were never praised, only the commanders who fell. But the Song is just as relevant in the present for those who have been out in battle and are out in battle. ABOUT Sabaton is a Swedish power metal band from Falun, which was formed in 1999. The band's songs are inspired by various historical wars. Even the band name is military inspired, as Sabaton is also the name of the part of the armor that covers the foot. Sabaton is more different from other bands besides the music. Sabaton is also a company with 100 employees and they manage everything themselves and no outsiders are involved that costs them money, this means that the band themselves book the places and arenas they will perform at, book hotels, sell the tickets themselves, they manage all sales of souvenirs , shirts and records. They have 6 trucks that transport all the stage equipment to make it look like a trench and the tank top that the drummer sits on and then all the instruments. As well as a number of buses to transport the band but also the stage staff. This means that ticket prices are kept down, because when the band toured around Sweden, a ticket to the concert cost about 57 dollars and those who wanted to meet the band before the gig paid 67 dollars. There is no alcohol sales at the gigs, but the audience is sober just like the band, who do not drink alcohol when they have gigs, but they drink tea and a little gymnastics to soften the body. Few songs to listen to and all songs are based on real historical events during war: SABATON - Lady of the Dark (Animated Story Video)kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXLWg5mZp7-Yi6c SABATON - The Royal Guard (Official Music Video) kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYuxZpWtaNyab8k Which is about the world's oldest still existing unit and was formed in 1521 by the Swedish king which then consisted of 16 of the king's closest men, in 2021 the Royal Guard celebrated 500 years and today they consist of 2000 men and women. Another song about women who fought in war. with history. SABATON - Night Witches (Animated Story Video) kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4qzoGuwedCpr5Y SABATON - 1916 (Official Music Video)kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpiqmZukhqdkndk Keep watching after they stop singing. SABATON - No Bullets Fly (Animated Story Video)kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqTPgGBpfMyYpLs Keep watching after the song ends, NOTE! usually brings tears. Sabaton - 12 40:1 (Live) Swedish Empire DVD. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHPciHyfe6mYqKc Recorded at the Woodstock festival in Poland with an audience of over 1 million. This song is on the Carolus Rex album from 2012. The album was released in two editions with the same name, one with English lyrics and one with Swedish lyrics and also as a double album with both editions. The songs on the album is about Charles XII whom was the king of Sweden from April 5th 1697 - November 30th 1718 and the rise and fall of the Swedish Empire. Charles XII's Latin name was Carolus Rex hence the name of the album Carolus Rex.

The song is about the Thirty Years' War, which had Sweden as a participant. Other nations involved were the Holy Roman Empire, Spain, France, the Kingdom of Bohemia, and the Dutch Republic. Some of the HRE's provinces, such as Hesse-Kassel and Saxony took the opposing side in the war. Here are the lyrics in English: Two ways to rule the world So similar at times Two ways to rule the world to justify their crimes By kings and queens young men are sent to die in war Their propaganda speaks those words heard before Two ways to rule the world brought Europe down in flames Two ways to rule..... Chorus Has man gone insane? A few will remain Who'll find a way To live one more day Through decades of war It spreads like disease There's no sign of peace Religion and greed Caused millions to bleed Three decades of war From dawn to dawn they're fighting Die where they stand The fog of war lies thick When armies scorch the land. When all of Europe's burning, What can be done? They've been to war a decade, Two more to come. Long way from home (line in Swedish) Lifetime at war. Chorus When they face death they're all alike, No right or wrong, rich or poor, No matter who they served before. Good or bad, they're all the same Rest side by side now.

Nice reaction, you pronounced the title really good for not being Swedish. I was at this show (sitting somewhere in the middle of the platform to the left from this view of the stage). Just before this clip started Joakim said no one carries around a lighter anymore but you all have phones, right? So turn on your lights for this one. then, in the beginning, he said totally wonderful, my friends, let's now sing together en livstid i krig. They had sold out the arena so we were 10 766 metalheads in the arena that night (going by statistics from online and the newspaper after the show)

A lifetime of war I look around and I see my home fade away My time at home now feels far too short Just a youth, barely a man when duty called me If i get to see my home again, that I do not know Amongst friends from my village, I went out to figtht And the world burned For war it can Destroy a man I give my life for my homeland But who will mourn me? So see me as A husband, a friend Father and son who never comes home But who will miss me? Went to fight for Sweden, was baptized in blood Out there where death awaits, not heroism In fields where kinsmen fall no song is heard Challenging our destiny one more time Far from home Baptized and die in battle And the world burned For war it can Destroy a man I give my life for my homeland But who will mourn me? So see me as A husband, a friend Father and son who never comes home But who will miss me? And when my time runs out Who cares then? They fight on Does a soldier get a worthy end? To fall asleep Pass away And never wake up For war it can Destroy a man I give my life for my homeland But who will mourn me? So see me as A husband, a friend Father and son who never comes home But who will miss me? lyricstranslate.com

It's a very moving song - and it was insightful to watch as you were transformed from simply watching, to when you turned on the captions and realized what was being said. Sabaton does true history and war - showing valor, mercy, heroism and that Soldiers from all over the world can be noble and self-sacrificing. May I request you watch Sabaton's "No Bullets Fly" (the animated story version - it's about 8:48 long) - it tells the true story of a German pilot in WWII who saw a damaged American aircraft, full of wounded men, and ESCORTED THEM out of Germany to safety? Please consider it?

And if that engages you - allow me to give a quick list of other stories that might interest you by Sabaton: 1) "Night Witches" (again, the story version is best) - the true story of Russian FEMALE pilots who were only 17 to 25 years old who were given the worst equipment during WWII, but became an absolute terror to the German Army. 2) "Christmas Truce" - true story of how in WWI, in 1914, the Soldiers on both sides decided to "take a day off from war" and celebrate Christmas with each other - even playing soccer together in "No Man's Land" 3) "Final Solution" - it's about the Holocaust. It's hard to watch, but they took the horror of it and made a story that told how a nation went insane and a people were sent to camps and ... well, we know what happened. 4) "Uprising" about how Poles in WWII, purely civilians, with little in the way of weapons or training decided they had had enough and fought against the German occupation 5) "Lady of the Dark" about the most decorated woman in military history - a Serbian who ran across no man's land and LEAD her people to victory after victory.

This song is about the Thirty Years War that indeed lasted three decades, and Sweden, Sabaton's country of origin and the country where this concert took place, was a prominent player in it. But Sweden was a relatively small country when it came to population so younger and younger men were drafted as the war dragged on. Many women lost first they husband and then their sons to the same war. And the audience, being Swedish, know that had they born in different time it could have been them, so there's this connection and somberness to the whole affair. (Technically it could also have been me considering Finland was part of Sweden at the time, but that's another story.)
@JariJuslin

And as for all songs on this album, there was a version in English, too, but the lyrics are not the same. The English versions tell the stories on higher level, on level of countries, armies and kings. Meanwhile the Swedish lyrics often tell the stories of the men fighting and dying on the battlefields.

Its an album that tells the story of Sweden's part in the 30 year war, its the only Album of theirs available in Swedish (and English). From the first song to the last you follow the history. Its an amazing album and my favorite of theirs (I'm biased, I'm Swedish). The English version isn't a straight translation though. They basically wrote two versions of the songs. Some are more the same, others the same but from a different angle (lyrically).

In a similar vein, give Soldier of Heaven from Sabaton a listen (the official music video). It's a dedication to an event during WW1 called White Friday, where the fighting in the Alps caused avalanches that buried soldiers and civilians alike. Many bodies weren't able to be recovered until now as climate change is causing the ice and snow to melt and expose the bodies that were trapped.

If you like a faster one, Check out his cover of Eagle fly free by Halloween. But, he’s got tons of really great covers, and a few songs of his own. Don’t miss out!!

En livstig i krig. One of the greatest stories from history in 5 mins song. I got opportunity to meet Sabaton in 2012 at polish Woodstock Festival (now Poland Rock festival) when on live show was 750k peoples or more (noone count that but after Scorpions in 2000 when we got over 1,5 mln peoples) we got oportunity first meet Sabaton on Scene and after live show i meet them at backstage (im musician too) This guys was super natural on scene and in public relations. I think i talk with all of them 10-15 mins after show and they all said that was the bigger ever live show that they done (and still was at this moment). Anyway, En livstig i krig got special place in my hearth maybe it unite men. But on the world was many many things (except sex music alcohol and all this normal things) that unite men faster than music it was respect, loyality and kidness - three much important things but you right the music of Sabaton unite mens, but not only mens on this show i meet my wife (we married in 2015 after Sabaton show at Wacken) my life was full os Sabaton. Remember peoples SABATON-UNITE ALL THE MEN??

They usually tease the singer at some point during the show. When I saw them last they sticked guitar picks to his head. I have seen videos where the wrestle him to the ground and sit on him while Tommy Johansen guitarist, sings the song they were suppose to play.

I had seen Sabaton twice when this video was released - when Covid scuttled the rest of The Great Tour, they release one video each saturday, shot during the tour from onstage. It was THIS video that made me decide to go see them in Sweden; just for the chance to be _in the crowd_, singing along with everyone else. I'm not Swedish, but have started learning the language to better understand their songs (they have one album that was done in both English and Swedish). I have now seen Sabaton 5 times in Sweden (between April 2022 and Feb 2023), flying from Vancouver Canada. This band has changed my life.

I like the reaction u did. The song is about sweden during the 30 year war at late 15 hundreds but thing is with the army a whole camp of people followed. There was hospital and family members and even prostitutes, so in some cases u had children growing up during this time in camp to at some point join the army and likely die in battle, hense "a lifetime of war". Sweden was at war for more than 200 years on and off taking a huge toll on men, Sweden never had a big population and this is one reason.
